Part of what makes these silent protag games so compelling is that we DON'T have someone talking to us all the fucking time telling us where we need to go and what to do.
It's just us, ambience and a job to do, we figure it out as we go and overcome the challenge.
If you have an Ashley Graham, Navi/Fi or Issun with you then it really takes you out of the experience.

The opening crawl was the only dialogue. You didn't have a bunch of scientist yap at Samus when she went to check the Baby Metroid because well they were dead. The Opening Crawl was about setting the mood for the game. Like shit is all good now, but it isn't kinda vibe. The music, very triumphic but it was a false victory, a gut in the punch if you played Metroid 1 and 2. It was akin to the Opening Crawl in a Flash Gordon or Star Wars movie.

It wasn't that fucking bad. It had a few cutscenes, there were some federation trooper extra standing around. I remember on Elysium the main AI would give you updates and orders, which was far more intrusive to gameplay than your pic, and those guys were used as cool bosses (Rundas was based). Also while prime 3 might have excessively used the motion controls, they made the actual shooting 100x better than 1 and 2, which were at their best in the trilogy collection. It's a good game.

Yeah, this is a good example. After several RE games, it was okay for Capcom to break the mold a little for RE4. I think that old school RE fans would agree that, the game was at it's peek when she was gone, which is most of the game. It's what we knew. But it's possible that newer fans, who started with RE4 (due to it's popularity) really liked having Ashley around. Not that she made the game bad - Ashley is alright.

A similar thing happens w/Cortana in Halo 2 and 3, when she leaves for quite some time. It changes the tone of the game. It's not better or worse in Halo's case, just different.
