I thought it was shit compared to 3. I did one playthrough and never touched it again. No idea why it's so heavily praised the writing was reddit as fuck even if it was less cliche than 3. The "rpg" mechanics were gay and I liked gambling on choices rather than forced stat thresholds. The characters were largely irrelevant especially companions. The only ones that were super memorable were mainline quest ones like Yesman and Caesar, who were both obnoxious in their own way. The charm that 3 had was lost on NV, but I hadn't played the isometric games beforehand so maybe there's a nostalgia factor missing.

For example, early in the game there's a bunch of bandits or whatever that take control of a building, and inside there's a guy you can rescue or leave. If you rescue him he gives you information for a quest. If you don't rescue him, he just teleports to the doorway and gives you information for a quest. All of new vegas is that basically. One of the most highly lauded quests, beyond the beef, actually only has 2 true outcomes, and they both are inconsequential. Its very trivial to design a quest where you're just railroaded and have choices at certain intersections. Its bad and lazy game design, and RPGs are a forever ruined genre because its become acceptable and nitwits have fooled themselves into thinking its desirable. Stuff like Alpha Protocol is just garbage, and its totally representative of how terrible that era of game design was. Having choices result in a bunch of inconsequential ending slides is not gameplay. New Vegas is just a gay moral arbiter simulator, which is why culture war types gravitate to it, because they suck at games and want to larp as always being right and being some grorious authoritarian dictator who instantly brainwashes everyone by clicking a button.Secondly, New Vegas is not a good RPG. Its designed so you can't really miss out on anything important and your character can easily do everything. You never have to make hard choices, not just ones where you might pass up on something else, but also difficult and punishing choices you have to make because you might not be strong enough.

So when you shoot someone else in the head, the literalist only sees: "I have a gun, I shot him in the head, he should be dead". But while yes, it appears that you shot him in the head, what is happening is that the low damage, and the enemy surviving a gunshot, is a reflection of your gun skill and weapon condition. You just started the game, your skill is likely very low. Your shot might have glanced off, missed, grazed, or otherwise be ineffective in whatever way possible. What is happening literally on the screen, is not essentially the same as what is being told in the narrative. The visual is: "You shot him in the head" the narrative is: "you fumbled for your gun and tried shooting him, you think you might have hit him somewhere, as you could hear him make a sound of pain, but he is still coming at you". It is the same as the critique that "turn based makes no sense, why would everyone just wait till it's their turn to attack?" Well they aren't. The turn based combat is a metaphorical representation of a fight that is happening like an actual fight. But because it would be difficult to control 3 or more characters, and tell each one exactly how to attack and what to do, and where to move, it gets "slowed down" to turns. And I honestly don't know what to do about "gamers" who are unable to see past the literal in any way shape or form. Can these people ever enjoy a Darren Aronofsky, or a David Lynch movie?
