I'm building up the courage to soon, but the fact that over half my steam library doesn't run on Linux makes me wary. I know some of that can be worked around with programs but I don't have the time to dick around with my pc for 30 mins every time I want to play a different game. Steam os/proton has really been accelerating the process of making these games playable on Linux though, so I'm pretty optimistic about the future. The second my library is 75% Linux compatible, I'll make the switch. Windows has somehow made me feel inferior to mac users after years of superiority and it just doesn't feel right. My sole purpose of an OS should not be dictated by gaming related needs.

That description encompasses all Intellectual Property, at least Linux allows for people to take the functional work and make a functional system with it, rather than needing to constantly work around a non-functional system like Windows.
>>727907341
Debian or Arch.
Debian will force you to fuck with extra package management (flatpak, nix, importing repos, switching repos, etc.) to get access to newer software that might have the features you want and might not work on the newest hardware.
Arch trades needing to fuck with package management (thanks to rolling release and the AUR) for occasionally needing to fix something going wrong (in my experience that's really just fixing GRUB).

There are "for retards" versions of both of these in the form of Mint and EndeavorOS, just keep in mind that derivative distros may not remain consistently good.

In the future you'll be manipulated with unoptimized trojan horse software to pay for overpriced, throttled crippleware whose resources can and will only be exploited by the infinite layers of telemetry and remote access baked into Win11 onwards.

Windows. If you're using an Nvidia GPU that's literally your only choice. Nvidia's Linux drivers are closed source and dogshit, so not only do that not work, you can't even fix them, there are fan made open source drivers but they're even worse than the dogshit proprietary ones you get from Nvidia.

Nvidia doesn't care, maybe when Linux has a 10% market share (kek) they'll put out a half decent linux driver.

Totally could be your distro. Honestly, despite what people say about "complexity" use an arch distro. CachyOS, Manjaro, or Arch. I bet you'll have far less problems.

>looking up solutions doesn't get you answers
Just use Gemini. It's free with your google account, it will literally solve all of your Linux problems with extreme ease. You can even screenshot a problem and give it the image to diagnose. It's more competent than you or any dude on discord will ever be at diagnosing and it reduces the time to fix things from 30 minutes to under a minute. Don't have shame in using a crutch like AI. It's a night and day difference.

Because it just doesn't werk.
It's an unfinished buggy piece of shit. Even something goes wrong just 5% of the times you try to do something new (probably closer to 50%) I don't want to have to cross my fingers every time I want to play a new game, mod, change my video/audio output, or god forbid alt+tab out of a game. I'd rather use an OS W95's features that just works than this shit.

Linux is great for computer science, I still dual boot it with Windows because when I want to play games I don't want to have to do anything but click my game and play it. I don't want to set anything up, I want it to be simple.
Until SteamOS gets a proper release and Windows becomes too insufferable, I'm sticking to Windows.

Good for you. But with so many distros, kernels, configurations and wonky compability with hardware it's really hard to have a consistent experience with Linux. Until things improve Linux is still at best a hobby OS to be used alongside windows.

I don't know, I call that a middle ground.
On one hand, I liked Bazzite a lot, but then I came across a few issues and it was a pain in the ass to troubleshoot. There's no reliance on fixes that are easily found everywhere.
On the other hand I liked CachyOS, but it was much less straight forward with installing stuff like davinci resolve. It took me a while to get it to not crash and burn.

Nvidia is now writing code in the kernel, and there's new open source drivers like nova being written by people on Nvidias payroll. It's one positive side effect of the AI boom and their own game streaming service in that they need to support Linux now. But all these drivers take time. Amds open source drivers took like 5 years before they were caught up and starting to make improvements over the proprietary drivers, and Nvidia will probably take about as long.

>>727953412
But Linux is THE os for autists. There's so much to learn and get into it if you end up liking it.

I want snapshots or something that will at least give me some peace of mind. I don't want to deal with the headache that atomic distros have been for me even if that ensures more "stability". I don't know if nowadays any games still complain about being installed in btrfs.

pick any of the top 10 on distrowatch. that way, when you run into issues, chances are someone else had those issues in the past and has posted a solution for them online already

Unfortunately not.
Because many games actually run well but haven't been reported to do so.
Many games don't run so well but are under "Platinum" on Protondb.
Anticheat doesn't guarantee games don't work. Though there is a website that lists most multiplayer games and their anticheat mechanisms and how compatible they are on linux (areweanticheatyet). Some of these games don't work for purely arbitrary reasons. They could flip a fucking switch and they'd be fine.
Your best bet is follow game engines. Universally used engines are more likely to work. If your game is weird and unique it's less likely to. You might have more trouble running a 2006 obscure japanese pornographic game than the latest and most demanding AAA worthless piece of shit that just came out last week.
Never, and I mean never, ever, trust someone who says "the only games that don't work are just anticheat ones".

The rankings on distrowatch don't mean anything. It's just the number of times someone checked the page of a distro, so someone can make bots and shit to fake numbers
Look at MX Linux for example. It's been near the top for years, yet you never hear about anyone actually using it. Fedora is lower on that list but in reality it has way more users

I know those anti cheat work on linux, but their linux versions are not kernel level anti cheat. They run in user space. Kernel level anti cheat in linux doesn't exist. That's the reason why developers don't want to enable it - the linux versions are actually not as good because they aren't kernel level.
Don't get me wrong, I hate kernel level anti cheat and don't want it to come to linux (doubt it ever will) but this is the developer reasoning.
In my opinion the best way to combat cheating is to allow people to host their own servers again. Admins running small servers can ban cheatertards a lot easier. Plus dedicated servers have lots of other benefits. Of course developers don't like that though...

>>
>>727957334
That I can at least agree on, yeah. Dedicated servers had their own slew of problems but its also what enables games way past their prime to retain players and a community. Though that's just another reason devs hate them is because they can't shut it down and shart out GAME 2 and force everybody to buy the new one

Mixed refresh rates on x11 has been wonky. It works best if you limit refresh rates to a factor of the other monitor 1:1 2:1 120hz:60hz. Most newer features on xorg have been weird hacks that only kind of work, multi monitor support itself was a weird hack that only kind of works. All of these features were built in from the beginning in the wayland protocol. Wayland protocols have just been bike shedding on the stuff you never think of until you don't have it. Mint XFCE is the best definitive Linux XFCE experience for a windows 10 like experience but on linux.

There was zorinOS lite but they discontinued for no reason despite it being slow bloated guhnome with wayland.

The only downside is the mint XFCE iso comes like pic related which is super ugly because the mint devs dont want to put even a minute of effort to tweak the XFCE4 XML files to look something like OP's screenshot and package that with the installer, so you HAVE to customize it. It would literally take 1 minute to do this but I guess they just don't care about their distro looking good.

But everything is a just werks out of the box it has software manager, updater and driver manager for nvidia with blue tooth support.

I should create my own distro with the forked mint software updater, software manager but its a big undertaking.

Gamescope supports a subset of reshade shaders (no depth buffer at the very least), and for video playback you can use shaders directly in mpv without additional software.
>>
>>727978172
Yeah neither of those support NV upscaling.

They just dont care about the XFCE/MATE editions. All they care about is cinnamon and the mainline edition.

XFCE/MATE are for people who are traditionalist so they just throw the mint-meta package and add these desktops and release it without any tweaking. Its really shoddy work and I dont want to use their distro if its not going to have first class support for XFCE/X11.

For example regular people want a system tray like OP's screen shot where the icons are small, concise and look nice similar to windows 10, and a time menu that shows the time in AM/PM and the date in a concise readable method. They can do this in 1 minute but choose not to.

Also in general I think the new libadwaita changes are pretty ugly with the blue tint to the grey theme now, It looks more bluish than dark grey when before it looked more like adwaita-dark/windows 10. They honestly just needed to change the colors to a darker grey pallete and thats it.

Also the main dev of linux mint, clem, doesnt even use the theming changes he pushed on everyone, he uses something similar to OP, a blackish/darkish adwaita themed desktop.

Default XFCE absolutely does not look like Mint's XFCE
Install Debian with XFCE and you'll what the default config actually looks like

How f do I make btop display my gpu
>>
>>727979492
Check readme, on amd you need some rocm-related package.
>>
>>727980295
Yeah, already followed the steps, got the rocm packages. Should I just uninstall it and recompile btop from scratch?
>>
>>727980378
For me, rocm from package manager picked up GPU after restarting it after package was installed. If you compiled it yourself, then you need to rebuild with gpu support enabled.

It's very sad to see modern 4chan's population using those words every day, every thread. It's like witnessing your old grandpa losing his mind and lucidity.

As a pirate chad, how do I play my games on Linux Mint?

step 1: load unpacked .exe into lutris like you were going to install it
step 2: play
>>
>>727991608
Step 1. Download games from steamrip, gog-games

Step 2. Install heroic flatpak

Step 3. Extract pirated games to /home/$USER/Games/Heroic folder so heroic flatpak can see them

Step 4. Click Add game, Add them in as a windows .exe game and click the .exe in the folder and Fill out the name form

Step 5. Press play

Note, some games do not work without certain microsoft redistributables, drivers and such so you may need to right click the game, go to settings, winetricks and winetricks gui to add them. For example binding of Issac: Rebirth specifically needs openAL otherwise it will not launch. This is one area where steam's platform is superior, because they test and bundle mostly all the requirements to play a game.

step 0: install kvm
