I made the claim that Obsidian and Bethesda depict the darker elements of the franchise in very different ways, with Bethesda having the tendency to shy away from, downplay or make jokes about the darker elements that Fallout is known for. The Think Tank is a good example because they're absolutely silly (and they do go a bit overboard with the dialogue I admit) but the game doesn't shy away from how horrible and fucked the Mojave would be if they ever escaped the Big MT.Some other good examples: Cook-Cook is a pyromaniac zoophile rapist. Nothing about him is funny or downplayed, he's a straight up horrible man who has harmed and traumatized a lot of people. You'd never find a character like that in FO3, 4 or 76. Neither would you find the depictions of the Legion's favorite hobbies like slavery and crucifixion, and you wouldn't get quests where you help free prostitutes who are hooked on drugs by their boss to keep them into submission. When I made these arguments the dude actually brought up Eulogy Jones and Paradise Falls as if any of that ever gets as dark as the depictions of horrible depravity you can find in New Vegas. Bethesda just shows the bare minimum of depravity and trusts you to fill in the blanks because they either can't or won't do the rest himself, how is that as dark as actually showing those blanks? His only argument against this was "well, Bethesda expects you to realize the implications for yourself". Mission failed, I tried to get interested into bethesda shit. Wizards would tell you Morrowind is the greatest game of all time and I would be inclined to believe them. But not new vegas, it's the proto-skyrim engine with the same game design that makes it look laughably bad and a joke of a game. My first playthrough went for 1 hour and 59 minutes so I could refund that shit after I got bored out of my mind in a wasteland with nothing else to offer but everyone's killable.
