A very strange and specific blend of sci-fi and fantasy that you don't really get anywhere else except maybe in obscure Mecha anime. Or maybe the Star Wars prequels in places. XIV started as more purely fantasy in subject matter. XV definitely had the Nomura touch in its FF Versus XIII iteration, and then it became a lot more grounded and generic in style after the reboot. XVI went full on Game of Thrones fantasy realism, which is honestly pretty cool in places, but also a bit dry sometimes. I don't want to say "It was the last FF game with soul" or something, but XIII was definitely memorable for its aesthetic.

XIII was actually my first FF title. It was really, really good and I'll continue to defend it. It has flaws, I think the main problem it really has is that apart from the main story there's fuck all to do because the secondary missions are beyond repetetivie and boring, but everything else is phenomenal.XIII-2 was fine. FFXIII's 'overworld' of Cocoon would have been fundamentally impossible for 2009. Far too big, far too experimental to pull off, way too much work on top. I could imagine it happening today, like Expedition 33 but with two different worlds, Cocoon and Pulse. But it wouldn't have happened on PS3. Not with the level of detail that they were achieving, not even close.

When they have to run through the amusement park, it ends with Dajh turning to crystal and Sazh and Vanille getting kidnapped. There is absolutely ZERO rest for these heroes until they reach Gran Pulse.
