Finally got my platinum title thanks to a measly +4 from a 3rd place finish after getting a measly +10 from a first a few races before. I can now drop quick recovery and return to surfing in the regular mode without having to worry about killing my points every time I mess up and get last. However, I will have to say I came to like using tech drift on a handling car. It may not be the meta for combining with quick recovery, but it actually feels good to play. I will keep it around as a comfort build and for team modes.

Quick recovery gives you what feels like 70% of the benefit of surfing perfectly 100% of the time and you still have room for generating rings like crazy to make sure you will end up at 100 without having to try. I think it is ok to have a build with a greater risk and skill requirement that will beat a much easier to use build, especially when the surfer needs to play nearly perfectly or get punished hard. The people who act like surfers get to ignore the game and play time trial need to try surfing themselves to see that simply spamming the shield mindlessly as fast as possible does not actually give you enough protection to beat out the benefits of quick recovery. However, builds with no item protection are in a bad spot and need a buff since whatever extra you can fit in is unlikely to make you fast enough to make up for the time loss from taking damage unless you get lucky.More importantly, this could be solved entirely through match making if there are a large enough number of people good enough at surfing to ruin the game.
