I tried this game out for the first time after ignoring it for months.
Right after the overlong tutorial that is mandated by law for every modern game, this game commits suicide by parry.
When I finally got to the game proper, I quickly ran into a boss enemy, so for the first turn I do all the tactics, mark the enemy, build up elements, set everything up, then it does a delayed attack, I miss the parry and get one character KO'd in one hit, then the next. First death in the game, then I see that a game over just puts you close to the fight you died in and I realise you're supposed to just fight the enemy over and over until you memorise the timings for its animations.

This is suicide by parry, because the way they made it, it's the only mechanic that matters. When you parry an attack, you don't just counter, you take zero damage and you attack for more damage than even your special skills, so when you give enemies high damage, the game becomes the parry. All of the RPG mechanics and tactics, all that about building up elements, AP, the overcharge gauge, weaknesses, marking, etc. none of it matters anymore, because if you can get the parry consistently you will win 100% of the time, but if you can't get the parry consistently, you can use all of the best everything and you will lose 100% of the time.

At that moment, the entire game became the parry. This is not an RPG anymore, this is the game where you memorise the animation and press the parry button, and nothing else matters, because the parry is so overpowering it overrides every other mechanic in the game by a wide margin.

Just finished E33, I can see the GOTY reasons but what the fuck is with this story? do the ending choices even matter?

As far as I can tell, it's a Well Made Game in the box of Modern Games In The Modern Games Box, meaning it's not as good even as janky unpolished nonsense made decades ago that did all of the above.
So much of the praise is focused on the economics and management of how it was made by beginners learning as they went. They had to depend on 3rd party tools doing most of the actual work, so no wonder it's so highly-regarded, but this is killing innovation.

Every character has 30+ weapons which all provide completely unique passives that completely shift the character's playstyle. There's also a system like FFVII's materia where you can master and equip other passives across all your characters, and there are hundreds of those. The amount of build freedom is crazy. For all the people complaining about parrying, you don't even have to parry. You can just set up your pictos to tank everything and even get bonuses from taking hits instead of parrying or dodging. There are pictos that trigger on death and do shitloads of damage or spread buffs to your team, and weapons that suicide you if you want to just trigger death on purpose to abuse that. Glass cannon pictos that boost you when you're at low health, stuff that boosts you if you're fighting solo if you want to use only a single character for some reason, pictos that boost the free aim shooting mechanic, or gives the shots unique qualities.
My favorite character is the blue mage, he has like 50 skills and his main mechanic is a mask wheel that rotates a certain amount of spaces depending on the skill used, and each skill has an extra bonus if you use it on the correct space on the wheel. Some of his weapons change how the wheel works, like making it spin in reverse, or making it so you land back on your previous space if you take damage, or always starting you on a certain space, etc. You can basically do anything you want with him.

E33 is a solid game but not GOTY. It does absolutely nothing groundbreaking, other RPGs have done everything it has better in the past. Its story falls apart and feels rushed in the 3rd act, although 90% of games released these days also feel the same. I'd say its still an 8/10 but I have no idea why people think its the second coming of christ. I had way more fun playing shit like Kingdom Come 2, Silksong and Blue Prince

It has the primary attribute of a JRPG, namely being a 100-hour movie with a rudimentary combat mini-game to keep you watching. The good points are visuals and world-building; the main bad point is gameplay, which is just dodge timing (*everything* else is window dressing).
