It's because consoles aren't for everyone anymore and everyone already got the Switch 2. A parent used to have a selection of options to get their kids. Then Sega succumbed to its western branch's chimpouts and dropped out. Then Sony Interactive Entertainment succumbed to its western branch's chimpouts and moved its headquarters there, dooming it to make out of touch California shit no one cares for. All while this was happening, Xbox was fading from relevancy as everything other than Windows is a temporary vanity project for Microsoft. Nintendo is pretty much the only ones left who make a console that does console things, and it is thus popular enough to command immediate release purchasing. You'd probably see them artificially add more if they hadn't unified their handheld and home console lines, as those were yet another option that had disappeared. I theorized for months that the Switch 2 would fall off (mainly due to its weak lineup of games and dogshit first Direct) but I thought it wouldn't start until AFTER the holidays, or be as severe as it already is. But I guess it shows that most people really don't give a shit about "B-B-BUT WHEN YOU ADJUST FOR MUH INFLATION THE PRICES ARE ACTUALLY QUITE A BARGAIN" unlike what /v/ coped about to defend the Switch 2 ecosystem.

If the Xbox and PlayStation divisions exploded tomorrow morning it would only make a huge difference to the biggest and worst companies in all of video games. That's what I have been thinking. A lot of people will grandfather into GTA 6 who basically "grew up" on V but there's no promise they won't go right back to playing Roblox and Fortnite and whatever else. With every passing year the amount of people who become Roblox and Fortnite kids grows and grows and while there is some overlap there, there isn't enough. I hope GTA 6 is a real fucking boomer moment and Take Two and Rockstar eat a major pile of shit in the end. Imagine how much fucking money this thing has to make to recoup the development cost.

It's not an either/or thing. People who will never graduate past phones or tablets, or people who will never move on past Fortnite or Roblox have always existed. 20 years ago, and still today of course, there was/is a MASSIVE segment of the market that only ever touched a GTA and a sports title. This is one of the things I don't get about /v/--you see so many people measuring the overall health of the industry based on some of the biggest and oldest companies in the medium who make some of the biggest and worst games year after year that nobody on here plays or cares about. Who gives a fuck if Ubisoft or EA goes out of business? Not fucking me. It is not that I am happy about it, but if the people in charge could not read the writing in the wall, then they deserve to get fucked.
I mean they based their entire decisions on social media, and bots they paid themselves creating a feedback loop of pure bullshit.

Consoles should not cost over $300 and the devs themselves could never make full use of the hardware provided to them.
Games became prohibitingly expensive to make and now the industry thinks people will pay $80 games (In reality $120-$150 if you account for extras)
It all went south after Gen VI.
Gen VII was a fucking mistake. Selling consoles at a loss, paid online, over reliance on MTX and DLC, awkward leaps in graphics that made consoles a hassle to devs and yet inferior to PC hardware in every turn.
After how fucking abysmal the Xbox One and The Ps4 were in Gen VIII, the industry could had corrected their course.
Now I see Nintendo repeating Gen VIII, and here is another kick in the teeth, we are starting Gen X and neither Sony nor MS could push a single system seller last gen for the Ps5 and Xbox S|X respectively.
