Old games were designed in a way that made you fill in the gaps with your imagination, because the actual in-game graphics weren't yet capable of portraying what the developers wanted to portay.
>>
>>729262092
When you see people praising uncslop this is exactly how they envision it. They haven't actually played those games in several decades and their perceptions are all gassed up
>>
Pokemon lost its charm in 3D for the same reason; you can't really imagine Pokemon battles with 3D graphics and animations, the vagueness is gone.

Do we all need to make up lies in our heads to play video game? Why would you say such a thing?
>>
>>729262092
It's how the human mind works, you apprehend the video game trough intentionality as the object you want it to be with what you provide and that guy provided a lot of imagination.
There are video games or early stages in them that felt exactly like that to me and I vividly recall the experiences as well.

I am thoroughly convinced not a single person who uses "unc" on 4chan is a day younger than 30. I know it is actual slang but it's getting too forced here to not seem like a coordinated raid.

whats the 67 part mean
>>
I've been watching this guy recently who is playing OoT for the first time in the current year. The most interesting part, aside from seeing all the things this person has to learn the hard way that anyone familiar with the game or any traditional 3D Zelda already knows by heart, is how much he thinks the graphics have kept up. There's a lot of praise for atmosphere and the couple of dynamic effects (like slashing signs leading to differently sliced pieces based on your attack).
>>
>>729262568
No, that's literally what the games looked like to them when they were kids

It's picturing things inside your head. Like, how far can you go? Do you just think about it and see nothing? Do you see the outlines of things? Do you see them in what I assume to be monochrome? Is it cartoony? Or can you go all the way to realistic?

I'm a numero uno myself

Japan has a 'culture of cute', they really prefer cute little characters, friendship storylines. This goes all the way back to Journey of the West, the earliest literature of asia. Pretty much any japanese anime or videogame will have the ever-present cutesy little character involved somehow, and usually a nakama group. Whether it's One Piece, Yugioh, or Persona.

Nintendo heavily relies on this. All their games use cutesy little characters, usually with an oversize head. Normally such games would be targeted to kids, but Nintendo makes extra money targeting adults. As a result, we have the absurd sight of adult men playing children's games with cutesy, smiling, happy little characters.
Link is a bit of an exception. These games target a slightly older demographic than something like Pokemon. The franchise is given a bit more artistic license to choose their style and worldbuilding, rather than the samesame cartoonish artstyle of other Nintendo products. But still, the same Japanese vibe is present, down to the very core of the games.

Compare it to something like castelvania, you'll immediately see the difference.

NGC and PS2 were the first time 3-D games looked good for me. N64 and PS1 were really blocky, FFVII always looked like trash outside of battles. FFVIII and stuff like Parasite Eve were a huge jump in that regard.
My first video game was a Snes and the first games were Mario World. Mega Man X and ALttP.

>>
>>729262092
I played GoldenEye on a 14" CRT in our unfinished basement, my parents just threw an old rug and beat-up couch down there. The TV had a separate speaker, this little round thing that had to be physically clipped onto the set (and would often fall off requiring me to duct-tape it on). And that game melted my face off. No cinematic / IMAX experience could match the intensity.

It's all subjective experience.
>>
>>729264242
Wouldn't it be more impressive to be able to picture unrealistic looking things? You can picture a realistic looking apple just by recalling one you've seen IRL.

Imagination can be trained.
People can train lucid dreaming, average dream level of vividness and you can also train the realism of your closed eye visualizations.
In my ordinary day to day they are not very strong but when I consume drugs or when I sit in bed and close my eyes, relaxing they are as real as reality right now.

For years my dreams have been a blur, dark and absent but I've recently started to trait vividness and every single night now I have them a level of 9 out of 10 of vividness.

Journey to the West is very far from the earliest literature of Asia, though it's definitely one of the most popular novels of all time. The Tale of Genji is much older.

Journey to the West is not a story of friendship either. Tang San is a useless chump, Wukong is a jackass, Zhu Bajie is a relentless pervert. They're a comedy troupe on an adventure, they are bound together by force and contrivance and destiny, love is probably the last thing that motivates them to stay together. The kawaii culture shit started way later with the mass commercialization of anime toward children and became increasingly dominant in the 2000s. Anime trended toward realism for a long time in the 80s and 90s in its art and animation style. Commercial success and selling merch to kids and girls drove this culture not some transhistorical preference pattern of East Asian art.

I specifically remember thinking Epona was crazy realistic when the game was new. The rest of the game not as much, I played it a ton but it was a couple years after it came out before my family got an n64 so there were fancier graphics and shit out there, but for some reason Epona blew me away. I think I'd probably just never seen an animal get any sort of real attention to detail in a videogame before, I was like 10 and videogame animals were usually like 10 polygons or pokemon

It's unfortunate most zooms will never get to experience this.

That was the magic of old vidya. Things feel like they're on a much grander scale when there's room for your imagination to fill in the rest. This is why modern open world games (mostly) all suffer from the same problem of feeling empty and boring, they're decorative pieces which are often far too big with few interesting points.

>see that mountain?
>you can climb it
>but why would you want to?
Elder Scrolls are still pretty fun exploration games though.

>>
>>729265576
you hit the nail on the head with the greentext. I would call the problem area "content density" or "interaction density".

old games only had enough render budget for the stuff you'll actually be DOING in the game. when you see something in an old game you can count on it being relevant to your experience in some way. there will be something to DO involving that thing, otherwise it wouldn't be there! they wouldn't waste those triangles and textures. you have an implicit contract with the devs saying, if you see something complex it offers interaction.

during and after 7th gen the ratio became totally inverted. now the vast majority of visual complexity is just "movie sets" that don't offer any interactive value. not because there's less to do in newer games but because they can waste triangles and textures on lots of visual elements so they do. but at the same time they don't have the means to make more actual content, more gameplay. we never really moved past 6th or 7th gen in terms of gameplay, we only kept piling on more visual complexity. the implicit contract is gone and replaced with a bold lie: this games offers a lot of complexity (it doesn't).

I actually only grew into the roleplay/imagination aspects of vidya when I entered my 20s.
As a child, I always needed some kind of narrative to play a game, and if the game was an RPG I NEEDED a 'canon' name to use. Most of my childhood was spent reading books, so I imagine I just didn't find an appeal in inserting too much of myself into the title.

I've really enjoyed a lot of games now that I consider my own thought though.
I imagine I'd hate a title like The Hundred Line if I wasn't allowing my mind to wander. Instead, I experience an unprecedented degree of mirth when I mentally write off the main character as severely retarded to an absurd degree, and I ended up making my first set of choices based on how I think he'd respond to the choices- which was through a raw animalistic grudge followed by him succumbing to the lowest amount of peer pressure possible, and that made the first 70 hours of the game a dream where the narrative flowed in a simply amazing way that wouldn't have happened had I been my younger self (who likely would've just used a route guide to get all the endings "in order", resulting in a disdain for the title).
