In general, sure. But if I had to play as Vin, absolutely fucking not. I'd rather play a game based on the Emperor's Soul or Warbreaker planets than Scadrial though.
>>
Anything named containing born in the title is going to fail.

Sanderson is great at doing the first book of a series then failing horribly afterwards.
God damn did Stormlight go to shit

>Apsalar
I read like 6 or 7 Malazan books and this name doesn't ring a bell. The issue with Malazan is that you're essentially required to read all 15 books consecutively because there's just too much shit going on to remember. I think I read it for months and that was when I had slightly more time than just the 30 minutes or whatever each night I read.

>>
>>730851526
It's Reddit's influence. I've been reading his shit for a long time, at least a decade. I used to be a fuckhuge fan and I've read all his Cosmere stuff at least twice, but his last 3 or 4 things have been so terrible. The most recent Stormlight was so unspeakably fucking bad that I almost want to cut my losses.
>tranny characters
>fag main characters
>"No, I'm his therapist" (nearly died of cringe)
>recycling merged shard shit from Mistborn
>Szeth character assassination
I'm sure there were many, many more things that made me assmad, but I purged the book from my mind after reading it. I'll reread it eventually and maybe I'll like it slightly better like I did rereading Rhythm of War, but I doubt it.
>>
Of course!
we are the mistborn
we are the new porn
>>
>>730851526
I haven't read any of his stuff, but I guess I'll just read the first book of each series and imagine the rest.
>>
>“What are you? ... are you his spren? His god?”
>“No,” Kaladin said. “I’m his therapist.”
>Ishar blinked. “... What is that?”
>“I honestly have no idea,” Kaladin admitted.”
powerful writing..........
>>
>>730851874
You can tell heckin' wholesome chungus Reddit has poisoned his fucking mind. There was also some really awkward sex lines, which is something he should never be writing. I distinctly remember Lift talking about asses multiple times.
>>
>>730851587
Not really
There are very few recurring characters across the series so remembering everyone isn’t much of an issue. Most of the books have their own self contained goals that get resolved by the end of each volume
Like there is a guy named Pores that was mentioned since HoC but you barely learn anything about him until the last two books, and you’re not really meant to anyway. It’s just one of those things that makes a reread more fun
>>
>>730850854
I've never read Mistborn, but I don't have high hopes for a Soulslike by Western studios.
>>
>>730851874
>But stand. Kaladin. DID.
>"I AM THE LAW!"
I've in the past felt the criticism of sanderson's prose was overblown but good god wind and truth was bad when it came to both prose and dialogue. I had to grab Way of Kings out of a closet to see if I wasn't just having a realization, sure enough it was several degrees better than what he served up in stormlight 5. Nothing amazing mind you but not prose and dialogue so awful it grabs the reader and violently pulls them out of the narrative.

I'm a long time fan and a glutton for punishment so I'll be giving him one last chance with the start of the next mistborn trilogy, but if I get another character spouting modern earth rubbish or I have what was served up as prose like
>stand. he. DID.
I'm done. I'll read a wiki when the cosmere's done in twenty years for answers and save myself the time.

As for a mistborn vidya unless it's a jap studio and its not related to trilogy I'm not interested. The west can't do action games generally.
>>
>>730850974
Malazan is redditor trash.
>>
>>730852645
I 100% agree with you. I fucking love Way of Kings and the newest Stormlight is just embarrassing. I hope the new Mistborn trilogy is decent because Wax and Wayne was great.
>>

I only read Stormlight, but the first book was dreadful, literally nothing happening except for
>Dude another bridge run!
For 80% of the book. It was the literary version of grinding dailies in an MMO
I liked the second book
Dropped after the third because half the book was just the romantic triangle where what'shername couldn't figure out if she wanted the prince cock or the bridgedude cock

We've also been promised for a Warbreaker sequel. Nightblood is basically a main character at this point and it'd be nice to know what happened in the interim for Vivenna and Vasher since they're both on Roshar.
>>
>>730853165
And he keeps pushing them back, and making excuses as why not to write them. Frustrating. Although I don't think they would be worth a shit written now.
>>
Fame degraded Sanderson's ability to write which was already breaching YA novel-tier to begin with. I don't mean that in a contrarian-hipster way, I mean that the impact of his explosive fame has affected on how he approaches and engages with his writing.
>>
It seems even Sanderson has stopped writing shit at a fast pace. Who is left? I enjoyed The Devils from Abercrombie, but I'm guessing it'll be at least a year before there's a sequel. I've lost all hope for Doors of Stone and Winds of Winter. I expect Thorn of Emberlain to also never release, but I guess Scott Lynch recently released a short Locke Lamora story so I'll have to check it out.

Not fully on topic, but I just want to say that Stephen King is bad. The bulk of his "good" novels (IT, The Stand, 90% of The Dark Tower) are bloated and full of dumb shit. His old short stories were good, but I not notice how frequently he discusses jews in his new stuff.
>>
>>730853974
It wasn't that bad at first, but ever since he became Mr.Fantasy to redditors it's become completely insufferable. Success really is the worst thing that can happen to some people.
>>
>>730853960
Kingkiller Chronicles?
>>
>>730854032
He was great til the van ran him over
>>
>>730853708
His early books feel pretty rough. The crimson guard and Korel books were entertaining enough to keep me reading his later works but I wouldn’t say the same for everyone
>>
>>730853974
To be fair, we were told from before Stormlight that it would be the most Cosmere-important of all the books. Which doesn't mean anything if you didn't follow him before. Plenty of his other stories are fine standalone but obviously we're progressing the plot and Shards are interacting with one another more obviously, like with Mistborn Era 2 and later Stormlight books.
>>
>>730854032
Fairy Tale was pretty good, but it was weird how he'd sometimes just have the MC basically look at the reader and talk about some political belief out of nowhere, but it's King I don't know what I expected.
>>
>>730853974
It's clear diehards are his target audience. I wish I could remember specifics, but there were a fuckton of references to other books in the newest Stormlight and they don't explain it so you're left confused if you didn't do your homework. I like the shared universe stuff, but "hey, here's a character from a short story that most people didn't know existed" is getting old.
>>
>>730854214
>diehards are his target audience
He did a Q&A on his big fansite way back in like 2013. He had already been touring for a few years before that. I don't know why people act as if he suddenly sprang up in popularity. He's gotten bigger OVER TIME but he has already been big for a LONG TIME.
>yfw his Secret Projects thing was the biggest kickstarter of all the kickstarters
>>
>>730854207
I thought Fairy Tale had too much setup. Half the book is the MC taking care of the old man.
>>
>>730854203
I think the main issue I have with it is that before it felt like an overarching narrative whereas his recent books have been significantly hamstrung of their own merits so he can push his insanely large multiverse scheme. Wind and Truth was supposed to be a big finale to the first half of his flagship series and it barely feels like it since it's all just setting up more Cosmere shit.
>>
>>730854296
Yeah that was my main issue with it. He could have easily cut out like 80% of everything prior to the roach moment and it would have just been a better book. Especially when you're just gonna wave away so much on the back of "It's a Fairy Tale" I don't need to know the intricate details of hospice care.
>>
>>730854340
Yeah I agree? I believe that his characters are plot devices more than anything and very restricted. You ever hear how authors say that sometimes their characters surprise them and do things they wouldn't expect? Not in a Sanderson flick. The ending fucking sucked too but I won't get into it. That's a big rant. I do need to sleep at some point >implying

Also he has a fansite dedicated solely to his Q&As/AMAs/blogposts/etc., as far back as 2004: https://wob.coppermind.net/
>>
>>730854270
And boy were they worth it
>Tress of the Emerald Sea: I actually liked this mostly, except Hoid was the most annoying cunt ever this book
>Frugal Wizard: Pretty mediocre and forgettable
>Yumi and the Nightmare Painter: Genuinely the worst thing he's ever written. 95% of the book is stacking rocks and "tee hee I'm naked! xD" cringe scenes. He ruined what could've been a cool planet
>Sunlit Man: I don't remember why I'm a hater for this book, other than I read it being confused about why Sigzil was being chased and how he got the Dawnshard. That prompted me to read Dawnshard since it was the only short story I skipped, but that had nothing to do with Sigzil
>>
>>730853974
His recent secret project books were all better in this regard, even though they all feature Hoid pretty prominently.

I am also holding out hope that Sanderson scales back the gay/trans stuff some. I think it really hurt Stormlight, which has none of that in book 1 and then by book 3 starts to head towards "everyone is gay" territory.

In Oathbringer, there's a bit where Kaladin implies someone in effeminate for dating a man, and then the other dudes all act aghast like homo-sex is obviously the manliest thing ever. It just felt like a very "have your cake and eat it too" thing. Like, either the world has a heteronormative culture, or being openly gay isn't brave at all because it's totally normal. Yet there are repeatedly these scenarios where people are gay/trans and then literally every character reacts like being cool with it is the most obvious thing to do. Makes the worldbuilding feel pointless.
>>
>>730854510
>I am also holding out hope that Sanderson scales back the gay/trans stuff some.
Not going to happen. He dialed back his Mormon believes and is doubling down on Reddit approval. It's impressive they like him at all, considering he's religious (AFAIK).
>>
Real talk, when is Adolin going to fuck Maya?
>>
>>730854510
My eyes rolled into the back of my head in 5 when he took like an entire page to talk about how the administrative city state is actually totally cool with troons and have a super inclusive policy to update all your documentation for your preferred gender and pronouns. My man your book is already egregiously long can we not sit here and virtue signal shit that's already on the way out and waste my fucking time? It feels like the same shit as the therapy/mental illness angle where he got praised for it early and now somehow 95% of the population in his worlds are gay mental asylum escapees.
>>
>>730854063
yeah that's the one, would make a pretty cool arpg
>>
>>730854489
I felt Tress was a dream fantasy of a sheltered BPD. I did warm up at the very end but the entire thing was a crock of shit. I ended up reading Sunlit Man and one thing I can tell you is that the pacing was awful. Felt like a good 40% was forced padding. And you're waiting the entire book for <pacifist to engage in violence>. All his Stormlight short stories, like Dawnshard will all have different characters btw.
>tfw your 1* WaT review has a whole bunch of likes on goodreads

>>
>>730854635
>gay mental asylum escapees
That's Ashyn, the planet which would have featured the power involving the disease-based power where you get strong the more shit you accumulate. The MC probably would have been a literal flaming AIDS fag lol

Obviously 4chan is going to hate the newest Stormlight because of the forced fag and tranny inclusion, but how does the general public feel? I'd like the response to his "new" prose to be so negative he goes back to the old way. I don't need homos, I don't need modern 21st century words in my fantasy novel, I don't need Lift and Maya being weirdly horny, I don't need epikkkk Marvel lines, I don't need retreading him ideas from a decade ago, and I don't want Shallan in the books.

Nah. The "Shard conflict" won't be resolved until the very end, considering this entire shindig started with The Shattering of Adonalsium. We still have a lot after Stormlight ends. Mistborn Era 4, the final far-future Mistborn trilogy, will be the overall finale.

The Shard conflict is the cornerstone of the series, the creation myth. And that's not even Odium fucking with Harmony during Era 2; that's Autonomy. The final Mistborn trlogy will be a space opera. I read some Elric books last year and they were pretty good, better than the witcher books(people say geralt is a rip-off of the character) which didn't do anything for me despite being a big fan of the games since 1.

I'm an eternal Wheel of Time shill even if how it ended up pains me greatly, but it's always hard to sell that many pages. I feel like Wizard Knight gets overlooked a lot in favor of Shadow of the Torturer, but I like the former more after reading through all of Wolfe's work. OG Conan is also a good read, but I know some people hate pulp and Howard is often too based for the modern audience. Phantastes is kinda a hard read by modern standards, but it's really interesting to look at what is essentially the founding work of what would become modern fantasy. Prydain's for kids, but it was written in the 60s so honestly competes with a lot of modern adult literature and I feel like it gets forgotten a lot, but I still like it. Black Cauldron could have been a really cool movie.

What annoys me most about Sanderson is how dogshit his world building is.
He completely fails to make me think like someone living in his world since all of his fucking characters no matter what the setting talk and act like 20th century people.

Way of Kings was so hilarious in this.
>were going to end slavery nationwide and never mention any sort of issues or pushback, everyones going to just think its swell do to so
>Yea lets just end the monarchy no big deal
>Implement a democratic republic, yea we all know what that is
>Wait you have mentally insane people sitting in a dark room, have you tried putting them in well light warm areas and have them sit in a circle talking to someone in charge? I thought of this all just now and have no history in mental health by the way
Its a fucking joke
>>
>>730857340
>Same shit that caused Robert Jordan's books to take a nose dive.
Other way around with RJ, from what I remember. Harriet was Jordan's editor. She was the one who sorta discovered him after he sold his first book. And the first six or so books where the story was progressing nicely and the books were coming out on a good schedule were the ones where she was heavily involved as an editor.
Then she went hands off because she felt that she had taught Jordan everything she knew about being an editor, and he was self-sufficient in that regard. I think Jordan himself said that she was mostly just a housewife for him in the latter stages of the series. She had less and less input and involvement as the series progressed.
So WoT is actually a series where the less influence the wife editor had, the worse it was.

The main problem is that the publishing houses started aggressively hunting awards and progressive accolades, and given the utter snobbery fantasy gets subjected to, it got completely gutted so they could stack as much award bait authors as possible.
Since that happened it became almost impossible for anyone with a low oppression power level to get in, and when the big names turned into lazy assholes Sanderson effectively became the biggest name by default due to the new hires selling absolutely fuck all

I have only started the 2nd Mistborn series, the Allow of Law. Seeing this thread does that mean the writing gets bad over time?
Cause I started Mistborn because everyone talked good of Sanderson for writing one of the Infinity Blade books, which I read so I was curious enough. And really liked it, you could feel the similarities with an immortal man that feels as a god. The series really threw curveballs that kept surprising me and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Well, the first book more than the other two, but I still loved it.
But seeing the rest of this thread makes me confusing. I didn't feel any woke elements in Mistborn. Or if there were I brain filtered them.

>>730884582
Stormlight was where the problems began.
The first two were fine, but they really encouraged his most self indulgent tendencies due to their length boost his audiobook sales.
Then book 3 started to show signs of the current year rot with jarring sexuality reveals that >>730854510 went over, which is particularly bad because one feature of the setting is the highly segregated gender roles. For context, men and women aren't even allowed to eat the same food.

After that he started to go downhill, but since he's practically the only mainstream fantasy author still active and had a decade of good will to pull from, he's got a hell of a lot of momentum behind him.

Not that anon, but yes, you should cut it out. Not because the way of kings is bad, but because the series goes downhill after the second book, and there's no reason why you should get yourself into this mess of a series.

There's maybe a single studio I can name that could make a Mistborn game with good mechanics
>>
>>730902662
Who, anon?
>>
>>730902737
Insomniac. They're a studio that Sanderson could feasibly talk to, due to being a western triple AAA that does licensing work and also ties to a larger company with movie production he's also shmoozing around for, and their bread-and-butter game formula is about novel and satisfying traversal, which is a must for Mistborn to feel any good

I kinda saw that coming from the tone of the series. It feels like a paradox that those nihilistic worldview writers who are very good at writing human nature and displaying scenes of genuine evil and horror are equally incapable of actually concluding their stories with anything resembling a satisfying ending.

worth a read if I wasn't too interested in the first law trilogy? I got to the third book, and just wasn't really invested in the story.

It's completely different. It'll sound retarded, but the quick synopsis is a ragtag group consisting of a wizard, vampire, sailor, cursed knight, werewolf, elf who can turn invisible, and monk escort a waif who is going to crowned empress. I enjoyed it, but I enjoyed Abercombie. First Law had great characters, but I wasn't crazy about the story. If you're inclined to read anything else from him, The Devils is good, but The Heroes is my favorite.

thanks, I'll check it out. I didn't particularly dislike what I read of the First Law; it just wasn't keeping my interest very well and there were a lot of sections where I just wanted the plot to move along to something else. Glokta for example; I liked the overall character, but his constant complaining all the time was too much.

>Szeth character assassination
So he shits up the best (and only white) character? Glad I dropped that series after that gay short story about the brown girl with roller blade powers
>>
Am I just accidentally reading the wrong shit or is there an overabundance of faggotry in fantasy? People have already mentioned Sanderson appeasing the LGTV people by making Renarin a homo, but it seems common elsewhere. Reading The Realm of the Elderlings, Robin Hobb dedicated four novels to a gay boat cruise (ignoring Fool, who is also a homo). That's okay, she's a woman so maybe it's expected. I'm reading a fantasy mystery book called The Tainted Cup with a cool setting and the MC has to start pining for anal sex. I see something about a book called Under the Whispering Door, which is ostensibly about Charon and a guy not wanting to pass into the afterlife. What it's REALLY about is a fag romance. I was reading Sufficiently Advanced Magic and the sequel had a point where the person essentially turned toward the reader to explain the intricacies of nonbinary or some shit. How do you avoid this shit without doing deep research into every book beforehand?

not him, but yes. he finally stops buying in to being a pawn to other people's dirty work just to do the same exact thing but now for Dalinar because Dalinar is a good person and Szeth can't trust himself to make right decisions. Then has a bunch of self pity moments.

>>
>>730914180
I wouldn't have recommended starting with that one, but you can pick up any first book from his cosmere series' without reading the others.
the only thing you'll really miss out on is little secrets and nods to other cosmere books and the extended universe of the setting.
Elantris just has pacing issues for the most part so since you're not going to get any of the nods or secrets it's harder to get excited at some parts of the book.
>>
>>730914770
Funny you say that because I thought his Shattered Sea series, which is billed as YA, might've even been a tad edgier since it had rape and slavery. I liked it though and I'm awaiting the inevitable sequel.

Elantris is probably one of my least favorite books of his. He was popular because his original publisher is big and doesn't fuck around with advertising. After Mistborn though he got REAL popular because he finished the Wheel of Time series satisfactorily after its author died. That series is HUGE in the fantasy sphere. I'd say bigger than aSoIaF before it became a show.

Mistborn ripped off of Final Fantasy VII
>>730913317
Szeth is asian coded as fuck. I actually think all Rosharans are to an extent, but I never could imagine him anything except Japanese flipping around the castle to assassinate the king like some ninja in the first chapter.
>>730913451
It is more prevalent now with characters out of the closet, but 90s books had homosexuals and would just hint at it. I don't read much fantasy from before the 90s but it wouldn't surprise me if they were in 80s books too. There is an overabundance of pedophilia in these books as well, sometimes written as a good thing.

>>
>>730917134
The apparent protagonist is an adult man out for revenge that gets "killed" at the end of the first book. We find out after the trilogy ends that he survives in some form. Which is actually good because he's probably the best protagonist in this universe

For the most part the real protagonist is a young teenage girl.

It is pretty based. Just remember to stop after book 4 because everything after that is just wacky adventures in fantasy india. Which to be fair, is still not that bad, but the first part of the series is better and pretty self contained if you do want to stop at that point.
>>730917492
I love magic in the black company since Croaker knows it's beyond his comprehension and makes no attempt to understand it. Also it's cool how lowly ass nigga wizard One Eye creates a weapon strong enough to kill a demi-god by just working on it for long enough. Cool way to show how power scaling isn't much of a thing in universe and nobodies can do crazy things if they have the prep time.
>>
>>730918596
i thought the company having generally shitty wizards was great. even their dogshit magic like make some worms or sleep was so fucking insanely op compared to 99% of the forces they face that the black company gets away with more shit than they ever should. also always funny as shit that they are such dumb assholes that even being wizards barely makes them a net positive for the company because of how much shit they constantly get into
>>
>>730919018
Wizards both being capable of cool shit but also being huge liabilities is one of my favorite things in fantasy. I also like when super powerful beings can be taken down by mundane means like when they beat The Limper with a smart ambush and his subsequent seathing about it that turns him into my favorite antag in the series or That they ultimately kill The Dominator by just jumping his ass with anyone and everyone nearby, hacking him down with normal swords and axes.

Its stupidly easy to keep track of characters, 90% of your POVs are going to be like the same 5 people.

it's been quite some time since I read it so some of the details are probably fuzzy
>kingdom of people that live pretty comfortably unless you get this illness
>if you do, they literally scoop you up and toss you in a barred city that can't be escaped from and will not let you out
>this illness basically makes it so that any pain you feel will never subside from stubbing your toe to getting your face smashed in
>city is basically lawless and there are massive gangs vying to control everything they can
>the only source of food and other basic needs except for the little care packages the upper city drops off every once in a while when they haul new people in
>this leads to everyone being in a near state of starvation so the gangs will wait for new people to be dropped off and then attack them for their goods and try to scramble for whatever was dropped off
>people also used to be able to cast magic by drawing symbols but it hasn't worked since a giant fissure or something opened up and people started getting sick
>MC is mainly the prince of the upper city getting sick one day and being dropped in the other city and trying to survive while somehow turning things around to not have the new one be a hellhole
I think the sickness also makes you practically immortal so that's why you have people experiencing starvation and can basically get beat to death but still have to live with the pain and hunger.

I was right there with you bro. I've greatly enjoyed Bakker's Second Apocalypse series. Also The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne.

Second Apocalypse is one of the bleakest stories i've ever read in recent memory, but I thought its writing and world was incredible.

Faithful and Fallen is more 'generic' but it's a solid mix of large scale battles and character stuff. As somone who reads a lot of slop, I thought it was on the higher end of "boilerplate fantasy" and there were plenty of moments I thought were genuinely cool, emotional or great payoffs.
>>
>>730924568
