Just got back.
How is it possible to fuck up the story of Silent Hill 2 so hard?
It's like Gans was told a summary of the story by someone who hasn't played the game in 20 years.

>>731447651
>Maria played by the troon that cant act
kek
>>
>>731455798
Yes.
James also didn't kill Mary out of frustration.
She literally tells him to do it.
All the Cult shit is also true. Mary's cancer is her being poisoned with White Claudia.
>>
>>731455918
The actress playing Mary/Maria is the only positive honestly. Some of her deliveries sound 1:1 with the original game. Shame Maria is in the movie for like 15 minutes total.
>>
>>731455723
I read an article about that today, according to him, he wanted the movie to feels like his interpretation of the game back when he played it.
he talked to people who worked on the original game, who told him many things that fans believed were not truth, but that everyone have their own interpretation of it's story. He said he didn't wanted for it to be too much 1/1, because it would simply be a worse version of the same story. instead he pushed his original interpretation he had 25 years ago.
>>
>>731455723
He's not a good director. The first one is overrated.
>>
>>731456012
Well his version is far worse than the original story and doesn't even make sense in its own context.

i.e. James not killing Mary for personal reasons instantly destroys his connection to Pyramid Head. Which wouldn't be a big deal except they constantly show James as Pyramid Head.
>>
>>731456012
yeah, this would be the only proper way to translate sh2 into film. to bad its executed horribly tho
>>
The first trailer for the movie already showed that it would be terrible juvenile shit. The only way to make a proper SH movie would be to have hired david lynch or someone as crazy as him in order to make a truly uncomfortable, alienating movie just like the games are. But the movies this guy is capable of doing are too tame.
>>
>>731456012
Directors that haven't made acclaimed works need to know their fucking place before they attempt shit like this. Put the adaptation in the bag unless you have the chops.
>>
They are probably going to adapt silent hill 2 again in 10 years as a TV show or another thing anyway, everyone want to do silent hill 2. maybe they will do a theater play next.
which be funny because the guy who played James in the remake is a theater actor.
>>
>>731456282
killing a loved one because they asked you to do it while literally withering away from some incurable disease doesn't mean you won't feel guilt or the desire to self punish once the deed is done, people are vastly more complex than that over the death of loved ones
Also doesn't Mary even tells James it's fine in the game eventually, that she understands why he did it
>>
>>731456319
>>731456593
It's annoying because it's not like it's devoid of good points, there's some talented people there and some care put into it, but it's too clumsy, confusing and full of strange choices. they would need someone with a clearer direction. and a lot more budget.
They need to find a bigger director. but is there any who has expressed interest in adapting silent hill 2? maybe it would work better as a TV show.
>>
This is getting horrible reviews and I'm just happy that this LE EPIC KONAMI REVIVAL!!!!!!!!!! keeps being shit and failing.
>>
>>731456795
Pyramid Head is a symbol of wrath and a desire for punishment. Even in this movie that's what he symbolizes.
James (in the movie) is right to feel guilty over what he did but he is never shown to be a violent or wrathful figure. He didn't kill Mary in a violent, hateful action because he was sick of her ruining his life. He did it out of love because she asked him to.
It just doesn't make any sense to change why James did it while keeping other parts of the plot the same.

There is this one shot from behind where she's running away and it's clearly a different, adult woman playing her. She gained like a foot in height from one shot to the next.

While I disagree that SH2 is "just" that, there is a major problem with making movies of games that are basically just pastiches of movies but with gameplay.
>>
>>731457348

>has 3-5 spooky action sequences while meeting a colorful cast of characters

Any idiot could make this movie and Gans somehow couldn't manage it.
>>
>>731457130
Unfortunately this, unless they have connections, rare are the people in the cinema industry who has any care in video games.
maybe it will change in the future, but SH2 is already 25 years old.

Personally I think a TV show adaptation would work better for silent hill 2. might be easier to find a director too since they are a bit more open.
>>
>>731457580
Bioshock has a shitty story on its own and says basically nothing about objectivism. Other than the cool setting it would be a disaster as a movie.
>>
>>731457550
Yamaoka did the music for the remake as well as the new movie. I just find it weird he did "definitive" versions of the songs for the Remake and then went back to the original for the movie.
>>
>>731456795
>Also doesn't Mary even tells James it's fine in the game eventually, that she understands why he did it
depends on the ending you get.

>>731456990
it feels like they miss the ball on very basic things. like for a "horror" film it's really devoid of tension or stakes because James is constantly passing out or flashing back any time they write him into a situation and can't figure out how to end a scene.

the hour or so mark when he gets to Brookhaven and we're suddenly stuck in constant flashbacks, flash forwards etc get very silly and obnoxious.

>>731457037

The creation and downfall of Rapture is an interesting story you could make a tv series out of. I think adapting the game would be a mistake tho. It's a twist that only really works in a video game medium because it uses the meta of video game mechanics against you.

What if Konami does a SH2 anime instead of a regular TV show. could it work? Could SH2 work as an anime? how many episodes would it need?
>>
>>731457074
the way they set it up really screwed that element of it up. it only works when it's something he does in a fit of passion after years of dealing with Mary's illness. when he just shows up out of the blue randomly and she's like "kill me" and he's like "k lol" it just lacks any of the same weight or resonance. i feel like they wanted this mystery over Mary's past and their relationship which really undermines the other elements, the only mystery you need is: "Is Mary really waiting for James?" and when you start piling on other shit like all the Jacob's Ladder "ooh is James crazy and all of this is fake?" shit it totally wrecks the central narrative of the film.

in the game they only play with this in Brookhaven where you find the memos that make you think maybe James is a patient there, but it's only done to create doubt in the player's mind when you get to the Prison/Labyrinth and reality literally goes off the fucking rails and you're meant to question the voracity of everything you're seeing. is the town doing this, is James really just totally mental, is my game bugged and i'm not even supposed to be seeing this, etc. - in a film it doesn't really do anything except slow down the plot and make it lose focus.
>>
>Heaven's Night is no longer a strip club that James used to sneak off to during the night and a big reason why he symbolized the perfect version of Mary as a stripper
>Now it's a random concert hall that everyone goes to and James took Mary on a date to

What the fuck were they thinking
>>
I fucking love Jacob's Ladder and Lynch kinos. I assume this is nothing like either.
>>
>>731457879

>>
>>731457879
It could work as a 6 episode live action tv show. You just need a non-hack director/writer to do it.
Hell I would just hire the actors who did SH2R because they seem to get it. Especially Luke Roberts.
>>
>>731457348
the earliest i can remember hearing anything from the games was the hour mark in when James wakes up in Brookhaven, they also played Maternal Heart then too.

>>731457397
i'd say the SH2 movie has more in common with Jacob's Ladder than Lost Highway.

>>731457523
it's not possible to cram all that in under 2 hours. it's partially why Eddie is in the movie for all of 5 minutes.
>>
>>731451792
You could write "silent hill" on a piece of fecal matter, and Yamaoka would still love it, produce it and write a soundtrack for it with a bunch of reused leitmotifs

now it's not Revelation level of bad but it's still not good.
the direction is too sloppy and the budget too low to be a good enough. Even if it was done with passion, you need more.
>>
>>731457542
i don't think the SH games are just that either, the base concept for the Otherworld and all that is something Keiichiro Toyama has imparted into his other works. he was more inspired by horror novels and the works of Stephen King than movies. SH2 obviously has some inspiration from Lost Highway and Jacob's Ladder but it stands on its own, it's simply reusing the archetypes that those films used and reinterpreting them. this movie fails because it doesn't understand that, it's reinterpreting reinterpretations instead of first understanding the purpose of these characters.

>>731457879
you'd need stylized hand drawn animation, none of that digital calarts slop Netflix keeps shitting out

>>731457931
James never sneaked off to Heaven's Night in the first place, what are you on about? he didn't start drinking until Mary got sick and she was never at Silent Hill during the worse parts of her illness, it's part of why he idealizes the hotel and Silent Hill because it was one of the last times they were together while she was still healthy enough to be like her old self.

>>731457961
it's more like Jacob's Ladder than it is Lynch, there's nothing really Lynchian to it, there's nothing esoteric or primal that hits you in some deep part of your brain that makes you think and wonder. it's honestly a bit boring.

The movie was technically announced a while before the remake (if I recall, Gans just outright stated he was making it around 2020 or 2021 in a French interview, a while before the SH2R announcement).
The remake and film basically have nothing to do with each other. The film is headed by a separate production company who likely have a small relationship with Konami, but not a significant one- similar to how Capcom and Constantine are aware of the other company's efforts with Resident Evil, but the games don't really influence the film productions and vice versa (in regards to unreleased materials). Only exception to that was Capcom telling Netflix to do a Wesker resurrection storyline for their TV show.
>>
>>731458242
my thing is why did Eddie get cut for all this cult stuff when the original game had nothing to do with the cult? we did get more history on them but the cult had nothing to do with Mary's illness or any of the characters coming to Silent Hill. Eddie is one of 6 characters in the original game so you'd think that one of the original characters would have more going for him, it's basically a glorified cameo. same with Angela, i don't think she would even be in the movie if not for how iconic the mirror scene and Abstract Daddy are.

>>731458261
it's slightly worse

>>731458312
no they don't, Gans said that this is a new story with its own continuity, it has nothing to do with his first film or Revelations.

>>731458356
i didn't say it was as good, just that Gans obviously took more from Jacob's Ladder than anything Lynchian for this adaptation.
>>
>>731458580
it's not the same level of bad
Rev is bad because it genuinely doesn't care about the source material and goes completely off the rail.
This one is bad because the direction isn't clear enough, it's all over the place, even if the people behind it cared, it's like they got lost in their own work and the result was a confusing mess.
>>
>>731457879
>horror
>anime
There has literally never been a good horror anime.
A medium with over 60 years of history and the closest its ever gotten to horror was 'Higurashi', which is about as fear inducing as a Tarantino film.

Del Toro would probably do it if a good script came along. Also are we forgetting Blomkamp's Halo and him making Gran Turismo? Abrams wanted to do something with Valve. John Carpenter wants to make a Dead Space movie. John Wick guy is doing Ghosts of Tsushima.

>>731458707

>>
>>731458772
Del Toro would outright refuse to work with a Konami franchise even if he was given full control. He was mocking them just before the revival reveal.
There's probably some people out there, but it be hard to find.
>>
>>731458772
>Del Toro would probably do it if a good script came along.
I don't think he would, he seemed pretty pissed about the Konami situation already back when Silent Hills was canned alongside Kojima.
>>
>>731458973
I'm not even sure if he cares about Silent Hill, he said he did at the time with Kojima, but later he did some list of all his favorite games, and there was no silent hill in it.
>>
If you could rope him in a bit, I think Mike Flanagan could actually do a good job at it. He's one of the only modern horror directors who thinks about characters first and spooks second. But he would certainly cast his wife as a Mary/Maria so you gotta get over that.
>>
Hopefully Townfall will make things a bit better for the franchise, after their recent success it be a shame if they became mediocre again until the next remake. Isn't it supposed to release this year?
>>
So I'm right in thinking all the therapist stuff was reshoots, right?
>>
>>731458797
with how much exposition and flashbacks the movie had i don't think he wanted to have to link it to his other movie and/or retcon Revelations on top of that because then he'd have to explain how Mary's family was related to the cult from the first movie so there would have been even MORE exposition and backstory. doing a new continuity means he can do a new cult. he also wants the series to be an anthology series like the Twilight Zone so he wants the town to be a therapist town that helps people get over it when they kill someone and forget about it.

>>731458916
>>731458973
it seems like things are less tense between Konami and Kojima, probably because the old guard who fired him and did all the dumb mobile game moves got fired and replaced by the new people who decided the company needs to get back in gaming.

>Ascension (2023)
>Silent Hill 2 (2024)
>Silent Hill f (2025)

>Silent Hill 1 (2027?)
>Unannounced Japanese Project? (2028?)
>Unannounced Foreign/Experimental Project? (2029?)
>Silent Hill 3 (2030)
That's likely how the games will be released.

i doubt it, her interactions with James seem to largely be based on the director of Brookhaven hospital and his memos. https://www.silenthillmemories.net/sh2/memos_en.htm#doctors_journal

the original game lightly implies that maybe James is just imagining everything and trapped in a mental hospital, but it's not a serious conclusion that anyone is expected to draw, it's just to create a sense of doubt in the player and mess with you.

>if that's the one Ito is working on
Ito's project was Short Message. He hasn't really mentioned being on any new projects since then.
I'd presume the next 'Japanese' project (if indeed it is one) would be an instance like SHf where they farm the IP out to someone else.
>Short Message took forever to come out too and that was like an hour long, it got leaked like 5 years before we saw anything from it.
Short Message was finished in 2022 and was likely meant to release alongside the transmission, but didn't for some reason. That's why all the BTS videos for Short Message were recorded in 2022.
It's a very odd situation, nobody involved has commented on it but it is incredibly obvious that the game got delayed for seemingly no reason.
>>
>>731459431
the game was supposed to be small but apparently it's now AAA level and they recruited a shitload of people.
>>
>>731459585
>He hasn't really mentioned being on any new projects since then.
Konami announced he was working on a new mainline entry that was being developed internally at Konami but that's all we know about it, we haven't heard anything about it since the first transmission other than it exists.

TSM team won't be able to return entirely, some will but not all. because a lot of the team were ex Kojima Production people. And these guys are now back on Metal Gear.
It probably will be mostly new people, randomy Konami people, and maybe some rare Silent Team members who still are at Konami.
>>
Konami needs to reign in Silent Hill again and develop them in house like Capcom does with RE. The inconsistency from outsourcing will be their downfall.
For every Silent Hill 2 Remake/SHf you get an Ascension and Return to Silent Hill.

>Konami needs to reign in Silent Hill again and develop them in house like Capcom does with RE.
SH was basically never developed in house.
KCET was just the leftovers from other productions and had essentially no real oversight from Konami, and current Konami isn't equipped to back consistent productions for a franchise like SH.
Additionally, Konami doesn't actually know what people want from SH- speaking as a capitalist purely, they've actually course corrected fairly well. SH2R and SHf are the most well received SH games since the originals, and the highest selling overall.

i feel like a lot of it is making up for the 10+ years the franchise was on ice and Konami wasn't making any new games. because it was pretty crazy that the movie was achieving cult status and youtube essay culture was kicking off getting people into the series and Konami refused to do anything with it. my hope is that with how long video game development takes they'll eventually naturally slow their roll, i'd prefer 1 new game every 1-3 years rather than multiple projects every single year.

>>731460042

i really hope they don't fuck it up like they did the remake in terms of bloating it, SH1 is such a tight experience. i'm hoping they let us play as Cybil and give her some areas rather than bloating out Harry's, the novelization goes to her POV a few times which is pretty cool.

They used the volume for a lot of it. I remember seeing early BTS footage of the Abstract Daddy room in the volume and wondered how it would translate to film. As it turns out they didn't really show much of it which was probably for the best.

Why did this have to be an adaptation of a game that already had a story that was well-done both in writing and visuals? Why not just make an original Silent Hill story? The series is basically an anthology series anyway.
>>
>>731460204
>i really hope they don't fuck it up like they did the remake in terms of bloating it
this would be my one criticism, the original never overstays its welcome and I feel like they'll pad out SH1 the same way because

actually it's probably because Team Silent/Masashiro Ito lifted that particular concept from other artists so they probably didn't want to plagiarize it for the movie too https://www.munchiesart.club/wrapped-art-artists/

at least that's my guess, it's such a powerful visual and the only reason i could think to not include it.

>>731460847
yes there's some swearing, i think James says fuck a few times but it's out of surprise and not WHERE'S MY FUCKING WIFE like people thought. also Bloober was 100% babysit throughout the entire thing, Masahiro Ito supervised the project and there were some other Konami oldheads managing it. it only turned out as good as it did because it was built on the bones of the original game and they had supervision. if Bloober was asked to make a Silent Hill 5 it would not be very good.
>>
>>731460976
>actually it's probably because Team Silent/Masashiro Ito lifted that particular concept from other artists so they probably didn't want to plagiarize it for the movie too

It's literally in the movie.
They just put a biohazard sign on it to imply the government did it or something. (they mentioned earlier the water was poison or some shit)
It's a case of them copying the game but not understanding why it was in the game.

It's an odd film. I think that people will calm down a bit about it eventually. Feels like a hybrid of the French film Orpheus, Layers of Fear, and Silent Hill 2.

Something about the film feels odd and disjointed, and I kinda wonder if they ran out of money and had to stitch together a shorter version of the film where they could complete the VFX. Eddie disappears from the movie, but I seem to recall they filmed a fight scene between him and James.

Ultimately the film leans into being strange and surreal. I think the last 30 minutes is far stronger than the first hour. There's some really good imagery.
>>731451792
George R.R. Martin apparently liked In the Lost Lands by Paul W.S. Anderson, and told Paul that he had captured his voice as a writer better than any other director. ITLL kinda reminds me of Return to Silent Hill in that it feels like a film that lost its way during post-production and second-guessing itself and its core themes. It feels cobbled together in an awkward way, held together barely by interesting imagery and atmosphere.
>>
>>731462116
I feel the same way honestly. Like there's almost something there but it's obvious the smaller budget didn't work for it considering so much of the movie looked like a bad UE5 cutscene.
>>
Lmao a Silent Hill 2 series would be 7 episodes of pointless flashbacks with James arriving in town in episode 8 and the series getting shitcanned before season 2 even happens.

> kinda wonder if they ran out of money and had to stitch together a shorter version of the film where they could complete the VFX. Eddie disappears from the movie, but I seem to recall they filmed a fight scene between him and James.

Wouldn't surprise me desu. The labyrinth kind of just ends. James jumps from Maria's death to the abstract daddy by teleportation and then wakes up on the shore with the hotel already burning.
The movie has decent pacing up until the labyrinth and then it becomes schizophrenic.
James doesn't even get a showdown with Pyramid Head.

With films like this, the waters are heavily muddied by source material fans crying about changes. When a horror film is original or nobody has read the book it was based on, you get a more clear-minded evaluation. People like it, people don't like it. When it's based on something semi-well-known, suddenly it's a problem. I remember reading that one of the reasons The Shining was Razzie-nominated was that the people in charge of the Razzies hated the changes the film had made from the book. So this has always been a thing.
>>
>>731461847
>>731461530
SH2, the game, is about 3-5 hours long.
Most of the story could effectively be told in 90 minutes. Even a movie at the longer end of 120 minutes would probably be overdoing it for a game like Silent Hill.
Games are only as long as they are because they have redundant/unadaptable factors. Gameplay, reiterated scenes to add context for gameplay, puzzles that wouldn't need to exist in a film, etc.
>>
That Jordan guy who make horror movies, he's said to be one of the rising stars, could he make a good adaptation of SH2?
>>
>>731462567
Silent Hill 2 has a bit of a problem. The story is actually an incoherent mess and James is a paper thin character. So much of the "story" of Silent Hill is people reading into shit. Videogames have a dual problem of being too long but also far too thinly sketched out narrative-wise.

Origins is a genuinely good game with rough edges caused by having to be developed in about 10 months after the previous team shat the bed. It has issues, yes. The plot is wobbly because Konami forced them to use FMV cutscenes originally created for the Climax LA version. But what is interesting is that Fungo had a mental breakdown because everyone made it clear, including people like Jeremy Blaustein, that Origins was canon. So he made his dumb video series which was literally just hours of crying about how Silent Hill 2 turning the town into a therapist was hecking based but Origins confirming something every previous game stated -- that Alessa was intentionally burned by her mother -- was NOT based.
>>

SH2 is one of my favorite games and i didn't think it's nearly as bad as people are complaining about. i honestly think a lot of it is performative, like horror fans really want to have their Star Wars The Last Jedi moment or something so they want to pretend like Gans raped Silent Hill when it's just kind of a mediocre movie. this is nothing on the scale of the amount of rape that Luke Skywalker or Doctor Who got.

The real issue is that more people know SH for the film then they do the video game, and that's really sad when the movies do a poor job of reflecting their source material past a surface level. No one would care if the film was just forgotten and had no legacy, but it having the legacy of representing SH as a whole in mainstream culture is what pisses people off.

>The boiler explosion was an accident.
Every single Silent Hill game says that Alessa was burned in a ritual. The cult would kidnap women and burn them. I hate to say this but Silent Hill fans are fucking retarded.
>>731463519
Back when he had a twitter account, the director of SH1 said that it was intentional. Every single person at Konami past, present, and future, has said that Alessa was burned as part of the ritual, the fire got out of control, and burned the house down. The cult came up with the boiler explosion cover-up and replaced Alessa with a fake corpse provided by Dr. Kaufmann.

It is so incredibly straightforward.
>>

I wonder if anything was changed in reshoots or post. I recall someone on 4chan saying they worked on the film, and the twist was that Maria was real, and Mary was a fantasy. There are some odd things around Maria and Mary in the film, and it makes you wonder if it's papering over a reshot twist.
>>

Of course he's feeling guilt. He abandoned her, and maybe if he hadn't she wouldn't have died.
>>
>>731463680
There's no ambiguity in why James killed Mary in the move, but the movie still wants to have James act like he did in the games, where he wanted to kill her because she made his life hell and he was selfish. Movie James was honoring her request, plus she was part of the cult RAN BY HER FATHER WHO WAS ALSO POISONING HER FOR SOME REASON
>>
>>731463812
He broke up with her because she's part of a cult and won't leave town with him. Not because she's sick. That's a reasonable reason to leave someone.
>>
>>731463562

>>731463626
and Yamaoka was the composer for the movie so it's hard to tell if it was him doing this time or if maybe Gans requested those songs be used.

>>731463645
>I hate to say this but Silent Hill fans are fucking retarded.
to be fair though, before Toyama said that, i think the point of contention was more that the game didn't directly state it, people inferred it, but people treated it as 100% settled canon. the bugged memo about the boiler explosion is what muddied the waters i think, because they went out of their way to re-add it for the European version of the game.

>>731463786
so the OTHER point of contention is that from what i remember the big thing was the fire went out of control and burned down a bunch of houses, right? so the entire reason the memo exists is because the cult needed to cover it up. not that there was ambiguity over their actions with Alessa. but people assume the accident was Alessa being burned, not the fire going out of control.
>>
>>731463786
No, there was no boiler explosion. How is this hard for people to understand? The ritual on Alessa involved burning her. It wasn't candles. She was selectively flame broiling the child. The whole idea is that the mother of their god has to undergo suffering. This is why the cult would kidnap random women and BURN THEM TO DEATH. They worship a SUN GOD. They are obsessed with FIRE and BURNING PEOPLE TO DEATH and the whole point of their ritual to was to BURN A CHILD.

The story about a boiler is a LIE created to EXPLAIN WHY THE HOUSE BURNT DOWN. Holy shit, I cannot believe that Silent Hill fandom is so retarded they could not understand babby's first child sacrifice coverup.

for some reason Gans chose to change the time, in the games it's 10 after 9, every clock is frozen at that time because it's Mary's time of death. time finally moves to 3:19 during the flashback (i think?) because it's part of him moving on and accepting what he did.

Pyramid Head didn't even rape the big booty spider monster. He just punched its stomach a couple times. I thought the movie was going to be about Mary dying from an abortion just from that scene.

In fact, what was the point of the sexual assault stuff at all? If everything revolved around Mary in the movie, it never showed her getting raped.
>>
>>731464181
Silent Hill 4 was a special case, since clearly the game wasn't fully finished.
>>
>>731463923
>to be fair though, before Toyama said that, i think the point of contention was more that the game didn't directly state it
Silent Hill 3 says it explicitly and unambiguously.
>'Original self'... That was the young woman burned by her mother as a sacrifice to God... Alessa Gillespie.
>Half her soul escaped in those flames and went on to live in a baby... in that girl of mine. Of ours.
Literally every Konami employee who has ever been asked, and every Silent Hill game ever made has consistently stated that Alessa was burned as a sacrifice. There is absolutely zero ambiguity here. The fact Silent Hill fans tried to pretend it was ambiguous shows the depths of their utter retardation.
From a Q&A with Konami from the early 2000s.
>Dahlia originally thought that Alessa would follow in her own footsteps as a spiritualistic medium for the cult, but realized that the ritual would be far more likely to succeed if she used her as the surrogate mother to bring about the descent of the cult's god. And so seven years ago, Dahlia performed the technique to bring about the descent of the cult's god using Alessa in the cellar of her own house. Although it seems the cult has a place they use for rituals, Dahlia was confident that she would be able to summon the malevolent deity if Alessa was the surrogate mother; therefore, as it was not necessary to choose a location, she impulsively carried out the ritual in her own basement. The ritual process involved a great deal of fire, which consequently escalated into a conflagration.
There was no boiler explosion. Alessa was being burned as part of a ritual, and the fire got out of control and burned the house down. I don't know why some Silent Hill fans are so bizarrely caught up on the idea that the boiler exploded. It did not. It was a cover story.
>>

It's implied her dad was molesting her and that's where the abstract daddy bit comes from.
I think she might have had a forced abortion as well based on the dead baby that Laura is carrying around but really the movie is so vague about all of it that it's almost headcanon tier.

>>
>>731463974
>No, there was no boiler explosion.
If you look exclusively at the first game, it's fairly obviously that the idea is a boiler explosion.
Even ignoring the file that says as much, the game evokes boilers often
>the nightmare of the school is initiated via the boiler
>the first boss is fought "inside" the alternate version of the boiler room, with a burning body in the middle of the room
>in the hospital, the one room inaccessible in both the normal and alternate versions is the boiler room
>instead of turning on a boiler, you turn on a generator
>the final boss is fought inside a borderline copy of the boss arena from the school, just without the burning body
And I have no idea what that shit under the final boss arena is, but it could be a boiler, I dunno. But the idea in the first game never really seemed to be "they lit Alessa on fire for ritual funsies", this is all just a lot of shit stapled on after Toyama left.
Toyama's SH1 is very much just normal tragedies
>Dahlia is a sick woman in a cult whose love for her daughter is used to (metaphorically) rape her and (literally) destroy her body
>Alessa is a victim of circumstance who isn't allowed to escape
>Lisa is an unwilling accomplice, abused into compliance through threats and addiction
>Cybil is a well meaning person who can't actually do anything to help
Etc etc

This whole deeper lore shit is AIDS. SH3, 4, and Origins all suck.

Apparently The Short Message was heavily altered in the last year of dev. Interesting project. It's written by the guy in charge of Silent Hill, Motoi Okamoto. And TSM's story involves a time loop, which is interesting because Silent Hill 2 remake also leans pretty hard into the time loop stuff.

I read that too, it was going to end in a very dark way, but they changed this because they wanted the game to have a good ending as it was aimed at younger players, and they thought covid was too hard on them to have a very depressing end for the game.
they did some pretty heavy redesign too, the creature looked completely different.
It's a flawed game, though I think people are a little too hard on it.
>>
>>731464418
Toyama said in a long deleted tweet (he deleted all his old tweets) that "It was intentional, I think" when asked if Dahlia burned Alessa on purpose. Every dev at Konami who has ever been asked said that Dahlia burned Alessa. Silent Hill 3 says it. The very old Konami FAQ says it.

In fact, did you know that the only official source (that Konami FAQ) that says that the ritual took place in the basement is the same source that says that the fire was intentional?

Sam Barlow was not aware of that Japanese FAQ when he wrote Origins in like 6 days on a rushed schedule. He used game guide artwork that showed the fire in an upstairs room. So people were mad about that. But also mad that he correctly wrote that Alessa was burned on purpose by Dahlia.

>a deleted tweet said this
I look at the game. The game keeps bringing up the boiler. I take the game seriously when it has a portion of the game outright mention a boiler.
I don't really give a shit what outside materials have to say either, I'm not factoring in the Play Novel and its insanity into my reading of SH1.
The story of SH1 just seems to be a standard story you hear all the time about cult survivors in Japan- a mother let her daughter get raped by a cult leader.
In SH1 this leads to an actual divine conception, that's the only difference. Alessa's burns are purely symbolic for the destruction of her body, inverse to how Lisa does not recognize how much she has been ruined until the end of the game when she finally begins falling apart.
I choose to say it's an accidental boiler explosion because it doesn't actually matter narratively and boilers keep coming up in the game anyways.

The only reason this matters is if you really give a shit about the retarded and pointless greater lore written by a bunch of guys years after the fact, whether it's Owaku, Ito, Barlow, etc., I don't care.

Silent Hill (the first movie) also had an experience writer (Roger Avery) and a good cinematographer (Dan Laustsen). Neither of which returned for Return. It also had an $80 million dollar budget vs $20 million for Return.

One of my favorite SH story is that Downpour originally was going to feature a much darker protagonist who was an actual bad person, said to be "patrick bateman-like"
It got far enough to have gotten some testing and the original model is still in the files (looking like a weird mix of Bateman and James), but testers apparently hated playing as that character, he was too bad for them.
So they made Murphy and gave him a more sympathetic backstory.

That's just his Otherworld perspective bleeding into James'. That's like saying Angela is a fire elemental because of the fire in hers.

a lot of Silent Hill oldheads were upset with how it handled the mechanics of SH, but it turned out a bunch of lore got cut from the game that explained it all better.

i like the Prison/Labyrinth more but SH1's Nowhere is probably my second favorite area of the series.

i thought that was a pretty cool sequence, i like how they played with it to deliberately mess with people who played the original waiting for the Flesh Lips to appear. (i was actually expecting another awful CGI spider monster)

because we got a deluge of games like that after SH4 and they all sucked and the concept has been done to death. it's basically the first plot twist everyone assumes in new Silent Hill media now because everyone ran the "therapist town" thing into the ground.

I liked their version of Flesh Lips and their version of Mary on the bed with the flying bed sheets.
HOWEVER having Mary look like Vecna was a mistake and looked bad. Should've just wrapped her in dirty bandages.

Sure, but that idea has been done by incompetent devs. I think people hate the idea because the later games do it so awfully but I don't think that should take away from how strong of a concept it can be if handled well.

I think it did something interesting as in many stories about characters who had bad things happening to them, it only tries to show them as pitiful or sad, but still staying good.
here it shows how bad things ultimately lead to someone becoming a bad person themselves. Many players have said the character was too unlikable for them. But it's a real and sad things. Not every person is able to move forward in a good way. It's something many people often prefer to not face because it breaks their idealized vision.
The writing was really clumsy on some other part though, due to the short game time. But it had an interesting idea. So it will be interesting if some of the people who made this are able to make a proper big SH game.

Yeah the last part of the game is very very frustrating, even if it looks cool at first, it's way too hard.

first of all i ensure the SH3 remake retcons the ending back to the one the developers originally intended before they decided SH3 would be the final Silent Hill numbered title, where Heather leaves the boss arena but turns back as she hears a baby crying - implying that Claudia was reincarnated the way she was. then my game will be set 20 or so some odd years later with two protagonists, the reincarnated Claudia and Cheryl's (Heather starts using her real name after SH3) biological child Harry Jr. something something the cult is back up to old tricks and maybe Cheryl goes missing or Claudia Jr. is called to Silent Hill or maybe Harry Jr. gets kidnapped by the cult and you play as Claudia trying to find him and Harry trying to escape.

>Same time as silent hill 1
>protag is a white Claudia dealer that started stealing clientele from the cult
>gets kidnapped by the cult as a result
>The entire town goes haywire from Alessa
>You manage to break free of the shackles from a mysterious person and find your way out of a church basement
>Experience the events of Silent Hill 1 from a different perspective
>carefully selected fixed camera angles during high tension points

Angela is only associated with fire in her final scene. Bloober made Eddie into an ice elemental with the ice cream shit.

>>731467107
A game about Satanic Ritual Abuse that delves into stuff like the Finders cult, the Dutroux affair, Johnny Gosch, etc.

>Bloober made Eddie into an ice elemental
You fight him in a freezer in the original though
>>
>>731468675
Yes, that's where they got the idea from. If they applied the same logic to Angela, they would have made her play with a lighter instead of a knife.
>>
>>731468773
The final boss should have been Captain Planet

How can you just sit there and eat ice cream?!
