If the ability for AI to spit out code gets better, why would using it be any different than just hiring a programmer for your project? Either way it's not a skill you yourself has to learn if you have money to pay someone else to do the work, and thats how the majority of game development has been done for decades.

Lots of no OP database code with SQL injection vulnerabilities for example like it never took security or bugs in account.

>>731695874He does represent the average game dev programmer though and anyone who is programming essential or novel infrastructure. The job of a programmer is not to type, it's to think clearly. This is also true of other game industry professions like concept art which is why it's even more ridiculous when people post porn and then say AI will replace all artists when their job is also not to draw, it's to think. AI will save you marginal amounts of time at the expense of actually understanding what you are doing. It's great for people who want to pretend they are doing lots of work.
>>731695950I can. I've been using Claude at work for almost a year now. It takes less time to complete tasks, and bugs that previously would have made it to qa get caught early; often before I even push them. AI is the future of development. You're free to make hand crafted artisanal code, but if you will have to work a lot harder to make your deadlines.Let me put it this way. You, presumably, used an IDE that could create template files off of tables in a database in the past, right? Or even something simple like adding getters or setters to variables in a file? What is the different between that targeted, auto-generated code and me saying "make me a function that takes in X as a parameter, does Y logic to it, and outputs Z"? In both cases a menial task is now done by a computer freeing up time for me to focus on higher level things. Remember, programmers can only write, on average, about 50 lines of code a day. That number is unchanging across languages. When you factor in time for debugging, etc. you get 50 a day. Anything that automates lines of code for you so that your 50 can really count is a time saver. It's the reason we made IDEs that could write code to begin with.
>>731696089I'm 39 years old and have worked as a developer making enterprise software for 16 years.
>>731696160>anyone who is programming essential or novel infrastructurehe's not talking about people who are coding novel infrastructurethere are situations where AI will probably be minimally helpful. But he's not saying that, he's saying using AI for ANY code at all is bad, and that's retarded

>>731691637notch wishes he made project nortubel
>>731696342It isn't retarded because he's assuming you have a real job where you solve real problems and aren't a copy pasting machine. If your job actually matters then yes it remains a bad idea to let a machine vomit out a bunch of shit you immediately have to refactor and will eventually have to rewrite, since it didn't understand the full constraints and context of the task. You should already be able to type fast enough that the bottle neck is not typing speed, it remains your brain.
>>731691637>AI retards completely delegate (large parts of) their coding to AI>anti-AI retards completely avoid AIThe only non-retards are the ones that use AI the way it's meant to be: As a suggestion tool, filtered through (You).
The only gamedev related thing Notch wants to do is the mindless drudgery of making a custom engine. He doesn’t want anything to do with speeding up or skipping that because then he’ll actually have to work on the actual gameplay elements and that gives him anxiety since he might make an unfun game.
>>731696645>when I say you can't use AI to write code I didn't mean THAT code, I mean the parts where you aren't doing copy paste repetitive templates because real coders never have to do thatsure, move the goalposts further
>>731696269i have worked 14 years, but with games.>enterprisemy condolences
>>731696425And yet low level languages still exist after over 50 years at the bleeding edge of tech, in an industry that usually overhauls everything every decade or two.
>>731693813Infiniminer?In he's defence he worked on it with a bunch of people.Until the creator and everyone else abandoned it.But yes pretty sure he forked the base code for Minecraft.
>>731691637>implying coding is as rigorous as logiclmfao
>>731696829coding IS logicleave, retard
>>731696770>I do a bullshit job and never use my brain therefore everybody should be using AI or they will be left behindIt's pretty natural to assume he's talking to people who do his job and jobs like what he does. How the fuck is he meant to know what a female web dev straight out of a 3month bootcamp is doing, he can't even imagine the levels of non work they are engaged in.
>>731696829Programming is pretty much boolean algebra dude.
I work for a major fortune 500 company whose backend network structure services like 80% of the planet and literally everyone uses AI by instruction to code, then reviews it manually. It's cheaper than outsourcing to india or SEA because they're just doing the same thing.I can't speak for gaming but claude is basically everything people fearmongered, it's INSANELY useful as a tool. It will never replace people entirely, but you can cut a 3 man taskforce to 1.
>>731696802>overhauls everything every decadeyeah, no that's not how it works. the industry is more than the "pretty" websites you browse and discord.
>>731696912anyone who claims they use their brain 100% of the time at their job is lying>his jobhobby
>>731691794ebin
>>731696940Tell me why high level programming languages haven't completely replaced low level ones. If abstraction was universally good and necessary nobody would be using these crusty 50 year old languages. If you are already working on a high level of abstraction then you're already replaceable by AI.
>>731695281yeah if a retard mentions water that already tells you they have no fucking clue
>>731691637>a white bald incel chud is also a seething ludditelmao, checks out.
>>731696980People who do passion driven work generally don't engage in wheel spinning and pretend work. The distinction between hobby and real job is irrelevant when they earn a billion times more income and pay a billion times more tax than you.
>>731697114think you're replying to the wrong anon, buddy.
>>731697189again, you're talking about a very small fraction of programmers, while notch is talking about all coding in general
>>731696980>work as a machinist>zone out>oops, crashed the lathe
>>731697114They have now Java for embedded takes like 56% of the market share in like Korea, Japan, Germany.Assembly and C only get mostly used where chip cache memory is very tight and or you need speed for a special reason like a medical machines like a heart monitor.
>>731697287Your arguments all boil down to >It's cheaper>It's faster>It's easier>It justifies my bullshit job that I would lose otherwiseNever that it's better. It is also a universally bad idea to outsource shit to India yet corporations will do it too. The best solution is still to employ high iq individuals who move slow and deliberately.
>AIjeets are now shifting their shilling to include coders after artfags>you'll now be called troons wearing programming socks for not bowing down to AI overlords and denouncing your luddite ways
>>731697514Market does what it does. How many times did people opt for fast and cheap solutions than for a work of art that will survive the test of time like a medieval cathedral or roman aqueduct/bridge.
>>731697514cheaper, faster, and easier are more specific ways to say better. Being able to do something faster is a good thing. Being able to quickly generate generic code and have plenty of time to check it for mistakes is a good thing
>>731697684Then you must also concede that outsourcing everything to India is another way of saying "better", even when the accumulated tech debt causes everything to collapse as is happening with windows.
>>731697806I would say that outsourcing is bad in many situations, and probably good in some situations, just like AI is. Overall it's hard to compare the two, because one is a tool for coding that the developer uses, and one is a decision made by a corporation about who they're hiring. So they're not entirely comparable topics.
>NotchYeah fuck this retarded faggot, he couldn't even optimize Minecraft, he has no say in what 'devs' should do. AI is wonderful, not perfect, but tard-wrangle it enough and you get what you are looking for
>>731691637Kinda yeah. I mean if it works it works, but if it's not solo project and someone will have to go through that code, then you are doing a disservice to your colleagues.
>>731696520No they were not indian
