I was thinking about how odd tits and asses are. Yeah, they get my blood going and there’s nothing better than a good hairy pubis mons grinding on your dick but to any alien out there, especially if they’re segmented like earth’s arthropods, the site of human titties probably looks as sexually arousing to them as the raptorial claws of a mantis to us

They're odd because humans are outliers, almost everything mammalian has several nipples, teats or lays eggs. Alternatively the elephant has breasts like actual human women..for some reason. Then you got toothed whales who go through menopause like human women too. Why? I dunno.

I don't know much about Avatar but the same complaint is often directed at Mass Effect, and it's stupid. The reason why we mostly see humanoids is because of evolution, as it's clearly the most efficient form. It's no accident that all of the most powerful species in ME are humanoid. The Hanar (jellyfish) had to get an entire different species into servitude just because they're useless outside of the their water planet. The Elcor can only fight when someone mounts a fucking cannon to their backs. Even the Leviathans wouldn't be a threat if they didn't have mind control powers. Humanoids are just the best option.

For mass market appeal (though really just to please autistic psychopaths) everything will be filed down.
Original Avatar apparently dumped a lot of money and years of effort into worldbuilding that got thrown out of the window for a much more sanded down "Dances with Wolves but blue cat people" mass appeal version.
You could have had tall cat people with 4 arms and a movie that was probably more like just a fictional nature and anthropology study, but that was not going to put asses in seats and somehow provide secure revenue during a financial crisis, so we got "Pocahontas but blue cat people".

Your kind is obsessed with le no impact that it itself became a form of impact the movies have. Avatar is pretty much the only blockbuster series to come out, be talked about during its showing, and then fade away until the next one. No streaming series, no spinoffs.

do you think it would be possible for class/race based co-op game to be successful with wildly different sized characters like the difference between an adult human and an adult na'vi? The only games that I can think that even play with that concept SLIGHTLY is a few MMOs like FFXI with the galka and WoW with the tauren, but even then they aren't really as exaggerated in size compared to a human within those settings. Most games tend to keep different races all more or less homogenized in size, presumably to prevent any one race as being perceived as "superior" without sufficient tradeoffs to compensate for the increased size difference. I feel like if there was a game with a race of humans, a race of na'vi sized entities, and any other sized races in between, the na'vi sized race would still show a player preference due to the psychology of bigger=more imposing=stronger, even if that isn't necessarily the distinction (though in avatar, it is)

>>732370193
WoW and ff14 have tiny races. Plenty of mmorpgs do.
>>
>>732363732
>there is TPP
yeah, and it looks awful because all of the third person animations are incredibly stiff and basic because the game wasn't designed for third person, it was an afterthought. every third person animation has an extremely low degree of variation, meaning you'll see the model make the exact same motion every half second as it loops through the basic animation sequence. Mounted movement is especially bad for this.
>>
>>732370193
Dragon's Dogma and Baldur's Gate 3 also reward tiny races in specific instances when they can crawl into a tiny space, and sprint faster in DD. I think size is an archaic way of trying to entice me into playing something, and would rather have options that are radically different in other ways like playing a pixie/ghost/beast/etc. For general audience, I dont see why size difference races wouldnt be appealing. Girls want to be tiny and guys want to be big.
>>
>>732370325
>>732370684
tiny races don't apply because they are joke characters and almost exclusively played by ERPers, children and women/troons. Let's use Destiny as an example. All 3 races are identical in height, obviously an intentional decision. Even in games with a higher degree of player customization WITH varied races, like old school PSO where you can make literally children as characters, they were all still capped at the same height. Newman and CASTS couldn't max out higher than humans. I can't think of any examples where what I'm talking about exists, where there is simply an innate, significant difference in height between a human-sized playable race and one that is significantly bigger. Small than human is not part of the equation here, that follows a different psychology and is more for people wanting to be goofy, casual or roleplay-oriented.

not vidya but I always liked the Fifthp from Footfall
Elephantine beasts with prehensile trunks

they're also still primitive though because they did not develop their own technology, they found instructions, blueprints, etc left behind by a precursor race. They did not understand the humans attempts at peace because when two fifthp herds met, they would fight until one was deemed stronger, and the survivors would be absorbed into that herd, and they just assumed that's how all sentient beings interacted.

like giving space travel and nukes to a bunch of h. erectus

Or number of limbs has far more to do with the way our bodies develop in embryonic stage and the fact that early in our evulutionary lineage our ancestors developed a 4 limbed bodyplan, in a way that is almost impossible for us to develop new limbs after the fact. If just having 4 limbs was somehow the most optimal solution we wouldn't see invertabrates with any number of limbs ranging from 6 to well over a thousand depending on the lineage.

Simply put, vertabrated animals have 4 limbs, because the critters we evolved form happened to have 4 limbs and a bodyplan that didn't permit the addition of extra limbs. There is zero reason to assume that 4 limb configuration is some sort of universal constant when it isn't true even on our world. It just applies to one major lineage of animals.

I don't mind vaguely humanoid shapes, but I'm a sucker for outer appendages being very different. The hands, feet(and tail? tendrils?) is how a creature interacts with the world the most. Those which are much different will have an equally different way of making things comfortable for them. For example, if an alien has really long claws instead of dexterous digits, things like doorknobs and keyboards would be unusable to them. They'd instead rely on levers and a different form of typing. If they were a creature with a denser composition, they might evolve very wide, flat feet to distribute ground pressure, which may make things like shoes impractical. Then there'd be things that seem almost arbitrary, simply because that's what the dice rolled and there's been nothing to push evolving away from it.

Basically, a creature's design can give a lot of insight into how their world and history must be. I'm a sucker for this shit; anything from cute furry shit to more complex "realistic" aliens. Love to try and piece together an evolutionary history that'd lead to that result.

Finally, someone talking sense. The only thing that seems plausible is that an even number of ambulatory limbs is preferable. Even then there are examples of odd-numbered limb utilizing gaits on our planet, mostly with partial limb utilization or pseudolimbs (like mimic octopuses walking with 3 tentacles and kangaroos using a peculiar front two limbs+tail/back two limbs gait for its slow walk)

Yeah, we also see spider monkeys for example using their tails as a grasping apendage, while in elephants their trunks essentially serve as a wholly dedicated manipulation tool. The notion that 4 limb configuration is some sort of evolutionary constant is just pure midwit nonsense when even among vertabrates evolution has produced creatures that essentially have extra limbs even if our physiology prevents us from having more than 4 real limbs.

>>
>>732387692
The same rules of energy efficiency apply to small animals as well, if not moreso due to the extremely harsh competition as well as more difficulty at obtaining resource abundance at that scale. Smaller animals don't have magically more efficient metabolism than bigger ones, and if having less limbs was such a surefire trick to reducing yout energy cost, then we'd see it everywhere, but we really don't.
What we see is body segment and limb specialization, and that process can and has led to the loss of libms. For example, the heads of insects essentially contain very specialized limbs that have formed their mandibles, while their thorax houses the limbs specialized for locomotion, and their abdomen has lost limbs entirely due to becoming specialized towards just housing internal organs.

The common ancestors of ALL bilaterally symmetrical animals, including us, as well as insects was propably some sort of segmented worm thing, that most likely possessed multiple proto limbs/fins on it's segmented body. If that is the case, every bileterally symmetrical animal bodyplan descends from this sort of segmented, multi limbed form, that have over the unfatmably many generations between that ancestors and today, have adapted this bodyplan by merging and specializing bodysegments, along with their limbs. There is no real strict rule towards some magical "optimal" limb count across any such animal lineage, the rule seems to be far more towards limb counts going down due to limb specialization, rather than energy efficiency.

>There is zero reason to assume that 4 limb configuration is some sort of universal constant when it isn't true even on our world.
I don't think it's true, but I wouldn't be surprised with endoskeleton based life not being beyond 4 limbs due to the amount of energy needed to have muscle, bone, nerves, skin, hair for those extra limbs where the brain uses the most of any organ to function and if you're a higher thinking species you need to have that energy efficiently spread out while your brain uses the most of it. I can see it happening if the life has access to high energy sources that can allow for more complex bodies, having the support structure inside limits how the creature can look. It's a lot easier for life with exoskeletons or none at all to be in more complex in how they look having their "bones" on the outside but they too have limits as exoskeletons fail at a certain size because it'll be so heavy the creature would collapse under it's own weight. And with no skeleton that really limits what you can exist in.

Sidereal confluence has some cool alien race concepts, but it is a boardgame.
It has:
>Sapient populist tree-like creatures that can't move voluntarily but must be uprooted and replanted like regular trees.
>Wasp-like insect race that breeds fast and has crazy nonlinear intuition and thinking. Think like a skill/tech tree in a game but they unlock shit at random without caring about prerequisites.
>Typical eldar/protoss/forerunner race. They are at least 30 million year old race, so maybe the current bipedal form is just a fad for them.
>Nomadic spaceship-bound feathered, flying (floating?) snakes.
>Racist/militiaristic comodo dragons with hands that were cheated out of their galactic domination by the forementioned elder race and now have to begrudgingly join the coalition and win through cultural means instead of warfare.
>One-eyed, tentacled race of cheaters, blackmailers and tiefs. They will find (or fabricate) dirt on anyone and are not afraid to use it to the full extend.
>Coalition of crystalline creatures with very extreme biological specialication, one can move heavy objects, one can manipulate fine objects, one can think and plan logically, one can see, hear, and communicate.
>Altruistic, huge squid-whale social scientists
>Virtual reality programs and their reality maintenance division keeping the planet-sized servers running.

Awh fuck, that bottom one was a sci-fi idea I came up with on my own onetime. My idea was a huge supercomputer used to create a virtual reality galaxy for its inhabitants, who would sell access-passes, their technology (often useless/impractical in realspace), and media to real-world beings for the resources to expand and maintain it. They were defended by something like a French Foreign Legion multi-species caste who would be granted eventual admittance to the mainframe for loyal service, and were backed-up if they fell in battle and would get their 72 simulated virgins and all that.

Im gonna offer a strange answer here but I don't think men have the same desire to see romantic fantasies depicted on screen in the same way women do. We mostly keep it to ourselves because lets face it, romantic media is mostly meant to appeal to women. Men can romanticize or desire a family and marriage but its almost always rooted in reality as far as normalfags go. The underdog getting the girl at the end of a sports movie is way different than a mermaid gets to marry the man of her dreams.

TLDR until men open up to seeing stuff like this its always going to be catered to chicks.

All organisms in the universe evolve based on the same laws of physics. The composition of the universe is very constant. Water is a very common molecule. Stable, K- and G-class stars are not super common but not rare, and less volatile than M-dwarfs. Therefore it's statistically likely that advanced life forms that have evolved as long as humans have, have evolved on worlds that closely resemble Earth. At some point, extremely alien aliens become a less probable than humanoids.
Alternate chemistry can also evolve advanced beings, but their metabolism due to temperature would be slower, and thus their evolution would also be slower. So, if it took life on Earth to reach the space age 3.5 billion years, for slower life it could take twice as long.

Baseless conjecture. Our ancestors arrived at a 4 limbed body configuration LONG before we developed a large brain. Again, the reason why we have 4 limbs has to do with the way our bodies develop and the fact that for vertabrated animals it is practically IMPOSSIBLE for us to gain new limbs. It has fucking nothing to do with efficiency. Our bodyplan is just scuffed in a way where in order for us to gain a new functional pair of limbs successfully we'd have to undergo a series of very specific mutations that copy a set of genes that code for the development of limbs, in a way via which those new limbs don't completely fuck up the rest of the body they are supposed to attach to. Whereas something like a centipede can just keep growing entire new bodysegments with new limbs as it grows in size.

>it's because it's more efficient than other bodyplans that's why it won the race, that's why every vertebrae has four limbs now. more limbs == less resources for everything else including the brain

You have ZERO evidence to back this up. Again, if this "muh less limbs = more efficient" was some rule of evolution, you have to explain why it magically does not apply to athrophods at large. Especially when the first chordates that developed the 4 limb configuration were in no meaningful way larger or more complex than the arthropods of that time. Fucking sea scorpions utterly mogged our early fish ancestors and they had half a dozen limbs. If having less limbs was some magical way of supercharging body efficiency, they would have faced tremendous evolutionary pressure to lose limbs but they didn't.

The limb configuration we have, is due to how our bodies develop, not efficiency. Essentially, our e arly ancestors lost body segmentation trough fusing basiclaly all those segments into one lump, and in that process we were left with just 4 limbs. That body segment fusion is also the reason why we can't grow new limbs either, because during our embryonic development, the parts of our bodies that are coded to grow limbs are fused with the parts that are also coded to grow our internal organs etc. There is no clean way for us to separate these two elements of our bodyplan and mutations to the limb coding genetics will tend to fuck up the rest of the "segment" of our bodies to which those limbs attach.

there were probably mutant fish with more than 4 fins but they didn't survive because their four limbed relatives had more resources to develop a smarter brain, 6 fins won't make you better at surviving and you have to waste resources on growing and coordinating them,
>>

It would for a species that lived an ape like lifestyle our ancestors did. Living up in trees would give you binocular vision to measure distance moving from branch to branch properly and have great colour vision to tell what fruit is ripe or not. Take that ape like thing and put it in an open plains and it probably would end following a similar path ours did especially if they learn to walk on the hind legs and not knuckle walk like all other apes do.

>>732414317
>and they have no resources to develop a brain
Early chordates barely had a brain either.

>there were probably mutant fish with more than 4 fins
There almost certainly weren't because again, the chordate bodyplan does not allow for more than 4 limbs due to the way our body segments have fused together.

Again, you don't fucking know jack shit about what you are talking about. Your entire reasoning chain to why we have 4 limbs is ass backwards post hoc rationalization. The actual reason again, is due to how our bodies develop and the evolutionary package of descending from creatures that can't have more than 4 limbs.
>>
>>732414598
>There almost certainly weren't because again, the chordate bodyplan does not allow for more than 4 limbs due to the way our body segments have fused together.

>>
>>732362340
WHY DID THEY MAKE IT A NIGGER?!
>>
>>732414685
They are mutants and those limbs are almost always entirely non functional and actively debilitating to the individuals, because again, the chordate bodyplan does not really support extra limbs. I should have been clearer though, that yeah, mutations etc that ad extra limbs can happen, but they don't fit into the bodyplan in a functional way due to the way our bodies are built. Essentially, the extra limbs tend to lack the proper skeletal and muscular supports for them within the torso of the animal, due to again, how intervoven the genetics of limb generation are with the rest of our physical development.

To put it in more simple terms, adding limbs to a chordate bodyplan is trying to ad a "puzzle piece" to a structure where the place in which that piece would fit is already occupied by a copy of it.
Essentially, if you were to try to ad a new pair of arms to the human bodyplan for example, you'd also need to ad new shoulder blades, joints and what have you and now you are messing with the skeletal structure of your torso as well. Natural mutations are basically never going to do the troughout redesign of about quarter of your skeleton in order to make the extra limbs functional.

Why would evolution make our ancestors give up more limbs if those extra limbs would be more beneficial? Why didn't it get rid of the limbs altogether? Why was 4 limbs the stopping point for creatures with endoskeletons?

The reason why arthropods have more complex designs is due to their skeleton being on the outside which allows for that. When the skeleton is moved inside that puts limits on where things can be and where they attach to which limits how it can look. It's hard to say evolve the brain in a different location in the body when it's encased in the skull, but in a body with the bones on the outside the organ layout can be very different. It also has to put more energy into that skeleton which limits what goes to the brain AND having the skeleton on the outside limits how big it can get. Sure it can be massive in the water, but on land that has major limitations which is why the largest bug to exist was a meter long giant centipede that was close to the ground and could only exist because of the high levels of oxygen during the Carboniferous. Once those levels went down the large bugs died off.

Our limb configuration almost certainly has something to do with our internalized skeleton, however I doubt that having internal skeleton in itself creates some sort of pressure to have just 4 limbs. The issue propably is more to do with just the difficulty of rearranging the "foundational" physiology we inherited from the ancestors that happened to have 4 limbs. Again though, if having just 4 limbs was some sort of evolutionary optimum we'd expect non chordate animals to also converge on that optimum but we do not see that happening.

Arthropods also have pretty regimented internal organs, they aren't just sloshing around inside their shells freely. The key difference in something like a centipede and a more derived arthropod is that centipedes still have very undifferentiated segmentation in their bodyplan, which allows for just replicating segments like beads in a rosary, whereas something like an ant has very fixed and specialized body segmentation.

U-huh. Keep telling yourself that. Let's see...
-The viscosity of water prevents you from being able to use any leverage-exploiting hitting tools. Therefore you will never invent a hammer and build things. The best you've got is a spear.
-The thermal conductivity of water prevents you from being able to invent fire of any kind, because fire requires a net exothermic reaction that gives the energy for the breaking of further chemical bonds. You will never learn to cook and incentivize the development of larger brains due to access to superior nutrition.
-The electric conductivity of water prevents you from being able to invent electric circuits because you will never be able to insulate them enough. The best you've got is steam power from geothermal vents, since you can't have fire either.
-The slow heat transfer of water prevents your environments from experiencing stark contrast in seasons, meaning that your species never has to learn to adapt to winters and exploit summers the best of your ability, removing the evolutionary incentive to develop larger brains in polar region populations. You are stuck with the tropical stupid brain.

Whatever this is that allows you to translate your undeveloped brain's cope into words is your only hope. Your environment makes you physically incapable of evolving to the extent that beings living on land and breathing air can. You are smart only next to the shark that has remained the same for 300 million years because it has not had the incentive to evolve. You will remain the same as well, with no evolutionary pressures to make you different. You cannot advance without external help.

It would for something becoming intelligent like us. Standing on 2 legs with 2 arms hanging down actually reduces the area of your body getting hit with the sun and sweat being pulled down by gravity goes down the entire body keeping it much cooler. I'm in no way saying the human form itself is 100% perfect but I think something along those lines would probably be the average design for an intelligent species on our level or higher. Even if they had extra limbs I would see them being less complex for more minor things like holding something as their main arms are used for day-day things.

I don't think you understand the post. It's not describing convergent evolution as some kind of rule that seeks a specific result. It's describing evolution of a platform optimized for intelligence in a universe of this composition and these physics. Themodynamics needs to be able to justify a platform that differs from the humanoid that is of equal or superior efficiency. What are the evolutionary pressures that make another platform more fit for locomotion, energy harvesting and retention, procreation and reason? Why would anything have a different configuration than two eyes for example? There dimensions are the same three dimensions everywhere. Stereoscopic offset is the only thing a being needs for accurate perception in three dimensions. If a being is capable of balance, why would anything other than two feet be more optimal? What are the interactions that would benefit from anything other than two hands that aren't extreme outliers that would not function as an evolutionary pressure?

I said ape-like:
-forward facing eyes to have binocular vision due to moving between tree branches over long distances
-highly developed colour vision having to traverse plants of varying shades of of a single colour and knowing what foods are good to eat
-high use of the forearms and hands with fingers to manipulate and throw things
Any creature type can become something like that. Lemurs don't have ape/monkey faces but we know they're a more "primitive" primate due to their snouts still existing, a hold over from our tree climbing rodent ancestors. So something like a cat could become an ape-like creature in design and become a Na'vi with the tail being a holdover of that feline-like ancestor.

no guarantee for tetrapod body plan on another planet. No guarantee for independent digits. No guarantee color vision is even really necessary as the primary drive for it was from angiosperms selectively adapting to attract other animals and that was a fairly recent development, and it's not guaranteed in another ecosystem; earth's biosphere worked perfectly well without them for 10s of millions of years.
Some form of binocular vision would be likely but could have other workarounds. Eyestalks, oscillating eyes (like how mice and rats wiggle back and forth to see depth more readily), concurrent sonar and optics, advanced and long whisker-like protrusions, etc. Definitely not the only way.

Yeah, same thing happened to me when I tried. The intimacy came from the heart but the story i didn't give a shit what I wrote and was terrible

I think it’d be fun
>Na’vi need to deal with tribe relations to make sure units are combat effective
>RDA needs to hold certain resource areas to gain reinforcements from earth
>both armies have different leaders/heroes which give them buffs
>Na’vi get access to move around much faster but RDA has stronger weaponry
>Na’vi buildings are cheap and fast but weak and RDA has the opposite
Actually fuck a Natural Selection 2 game with RDA and Na’vi would be 10/10

Can it be a fantasy setting? I prefer fantasy.

>a story needs to contain more than just endless, detailed, explicit descriptions of petting, scratching, purring, etc
Who decided that? Sounds more mentally and intellectually stimulating than any book released in the last twenty years.
Maybe you could team up with a world building autist who can handle all the actual story/setting elements.
