Ive read some of the reviews

And i will post some of the negatives found.

- Item set bonuses were not an explained mechanic and many items that were secretly part of a set were never stated they were.
- Many hidden mechanics in the home regarding your cats are all active from the start of the game, but are only explained and given ui for once you reach specific town upgrades. This attempt to not frontload the player with too much at once only led to confusion as for example, two cats of mine were fighting often in my most comfortable room without learning why until much later because secretly they hated each other
- While RNG is a given for the genre, Mewgenics rng can feel over the top at times- while events and combat itself i can be riskmanaged with time, level up choices less so. with classes having over 70 possible abilities, 25 passives not to mention collarless ones, and only 4 options out of this gigantic pool, sometimes RNG would lowroll very hard, giving only weaker skills or only things that caused anti-synergy with my current build that I had spent time perfecting this cat for. Because of this, reroll items felt like a neccesary insurance and i was constantly juggling my reroll items between my cats.

I was literally thinking this when I was seeing gameplay. "Where the fuck is the tooltip for this?"
I swore at some point it did exist but maybe it just got lost or something.
It's like Edmund wanted to clarify all information in this game but he's still obsessed with hiding information from the player arbitrarily (like that boss with the invisible bear traps or the enemies that disguise themselves, what's stopping a player from just putting a sticky note on their screen when this happens)

>game boasts about its insane amount of variance and synergies
>he's STILL doing this steak-chewing bullshit even after conceding that he was wrong and adding an official item descriptions component to issac (which is still worse than external item descriptions)
Jesus fucking christ. This shit gives me pause because tactical RPGs are like the one genre where you REALLY shouldn't withold information from the player because there's no avenue that the player can use to compensate for suboptimal choices.
It's not like in Issac where theoretically you could just beat the whole game without picking up a single item if you "just don't get hit lol".
>>
>>732422743
>Fenrir hiding invisible traps
>Just use sticky notes
To be fair that attack is the entire point of the fight and he thinks people tracking with pen and paper is cool and very on theme with the dnd & mtg inspirations for the game.
Tyler fucked with Edmund on stream and told him wrong trap spots on edmunds gameplay playthrough lmao
>>732422745
Pretty much. The only really unexplained mechanics was item sets.
Items for the most part were very RAW (rules as written) and the only confusion from them was very niche synergies or antisynergies that make sense once you actually think how they would interact. The steak was item sets and mechanics that are told later in the game being secretly there from the beginning.

How rougelite-y is it? I like tactical RPGs but loathe most roguelikes. Is Mewgenics similar to Something like Darkest Dungeon in that you can permanently lose characters, but also breed the good until you have a steroid ridden cat that can just rape everything?
>>
>>732423801
Runs are like 2+ hours each. You keep any gear you get and your cats get mutations, modifications, diseases, abilities, ect. while on a run. Cats retire after a run and can be used for breeding traits and special house boss encounters, you cannot do normal runs with them again though due to good builds being able to completely nuke the entire game. So it's pretty roguelike-y but the runs are really long and there is constant meta progression that involves the characters that survive your run (or join your party mid run)
>>
>>732423203
>there's no avenue that the player can use to compensate for suboptimal choices
No tactical rpg is ever hard enough that you need to play optimally to win.

1) Your cats have permadeath and will eventually die of old age
2) if you lose a run, you also lose all items that party had.
3) your cats can (usually) only go on one run before retiring. Retired cats can only be useful for breeding or donating to some npcs.
4) kittens inherit some but not all of their parents abilities, mewtations, personality traits and passives. Injuries cannot be inherited.
5) this is because a cat can be made into any class, including collarless which only gets classless abilities.
6) the runs are roguelike. Risk management is a big aspect of this.

Nope. Lots of stuff doesn't tell you what it actually does, lots of features are designed around the player being a dumb human and not paying attention.

No indication on Magnet that it's electricity-based and that means it'll trigger on anything wet or touching water in a group, and no real magnets are not electric and do not conduct in water.

No indication Bait Trap is putting food on the floor that heals enemies or can even be used to heal your own cats.

No turn reset or undo button in a game where a misclick can cost you a run that might last 2 hours.

There's a lot of stupid mechanics like a miniboss that throws out bear traps, and you see where they land before they turn invisible. So everyone will just play with a mod that shows you where they landed permanently, while unmodded people need to play a memory game. Multiple other enemies use the same mechanic, like mimics that pretend to be rocks.

This game will probably be like an annoying 8/10 base that becomes a mildly less annoying 9/10 with mods, similar to Isaac but not as explosive.
>>
>>732422743
>I swore at some point it did exist but maybe it just got lost or something.
yeah this is the worst part, the gameplay from 4 months ago showed you what set each item belonged to and then they cut that tiny bit of text from their box "for the mystery" like 3 months ago.
>>
>>732425901
After Monster Train 2 added an undo button I could never go back. Roguelites are full of bullshit and I have a lot of fun re-trying to see if I had a way to win (and most often I do, and I get better by experiencing it). Now that you reminded me that this game won't have it, I want to kill myself... I'll still buy it though.
That said, magnets are NOT electric. All your complaints are actually pretty spot-on honestly. I will still, for sure, enjoy the game.
>>
>>732423463
>The only really unexplained mechanics was item sets.
Not really true at all.
Basically every house mechanic is hidden until you unlock them 1 by 1. We've seen save files a dozen hours in that didn't unlock almost any of that info. It's pretty fucking important to know if your cat is gay in the cat breeding sim so you're not wasting your in-game food and days trying to get them to have kids.
The elemental system is cool but ENTIRELY based on trial and error mechanics. Is it intuitive that electricity arcs in water? Sure. But why is this info found nowhere in game? We already know some of the shit isn't logical, like why does freezing grass mean you take damage if you walk over it? It's still just fucking grass even if it's cold. We don't even know what shit like the sound and holy elements interact with, but they're in game so they obviously have combos somewhere.
>Items for the most part were very RAW (rules as written)
For the most part means it's useless because you won't know until you try it. Absolutely nobody is going to know what Bait Trap does based on the text, because the text tells you 1 thing you can use it for instead of what the ability does. Range isn't listed on skills. There are items like Fancy Bow that we have no fucking clue what it does, because the text box has a quip in it.

>>
>>732426359
Agreed. It's not even uncommon in TRPG games, Into The Breach has TWO resets (undo action and reset turn). Why does Mewgenics have none at all? Probably because the dev mindset is "haha you got fucked over, that is funny, please laugh".

They designed it like that on purpose after all, with stuff like the bear traps you can just track with sticky notes. The only reason the mechanic exists is troll you harder than if it was invisible to begin with because you know you could have gone the tedious route of marking them somehow. They even admitted in the videos that many testers literally used physical sticky notes, it's an intentional inconvenience they know many players will just mod out of the game.

I still think the core of the game will be strong like with Isaac, but damn does it suck that the devs making games with good cores can't just make the game not annoying. It's a mod game for sure.
>>

Completely untrue, see Monster Train 2. They just need to seed the RNG so you can't reset for a new result. If they wanted to they could put more effort in with shit like resets only applying to non-RNG moves, while RNG moves have a toggle-able warning that at least stops misclicks from fucking your run.
>>
>>732427173
sunk cost fallacy, the first trailer dropped 13 years ago. it has like 8 years of total dev time behind it, with all of the past 6 years having him focus on it.
>>
>>732427173
That's the bigger crime here, the guy has like 3 and a half series that basically helps him sail on familiarity and credibility. 'Of course the guy that helped make Meat Boy, Isaac and PooPooPeePeeRockPaperScissor 3 would make a good game, I'll check it out'. But OG Isaac was like $15 USD in 2013, same with Meat Boy.

Even more current examples of pricier indies like UFO 50 or Bomb Rush are only $25.

I've played plenty of games with Undo buttons and RNG. They either lock in RNG at the start of the turn, or they have a limit on undos. If you can only undo 1 time a turn, that's sufficient for cancelling out misclicks or rare fuckups without letting people essentially savescum.

So you can use your 50% stun skill on the enemy you want to stun, every time you go to use it, and undo and target the one you want to damage if it doesn't hit. Seeded undoes would make a big change to your power level.
RNG moves locking you out of undo is a perfectly viable suggestion though, sure. Things like your basic attack could still be- well, unless you have one of those skills that puts a poison chance on your basic attack. But your movement can- except for times you have equipment that randomly spawns pickups when you walk, I guess, or certain weather effects... and one zone sometimes has invisible enemies appearing at the start of encounters, and literally anything you do there might reveal it or confirm the enemy's not present...
But those remaining 30% of actions — sure, there's no reason you couldn't. I'm sure there's no way an undo button this fickle would make players more annoyed than one not existing to begin with.
>>
I think it could have a planning phase and an execute phase, but I'll wait and see how the game flows.
There will most likely be ways to mitigate the losses and RNG later on.
>>
>>732427820
XCOM actually tells you what the moves do before you use them. Mewgenics is an RNG fuckfest where the game actively hides how things work. What does it mean when Queen Hippo's textbox just says "Has heart problems"? Just figure it out yourself, and you can go fuck yourself if you lose because part of that hidden effect is that she gains movement range each turn, should have known heart problems means she doubles her movement range on turn 1.

Yeah and with a game that has a 6 year dev cycle they could have accounted for that. Perhaps with less swingy moves that are "50% chance to lose 50% chance to win".
> I'm sure there's no way an undo button this fickle would make players more annoyed than one not existing to begin with.
You're larping. It exists in thousands of games just fine. Absolutely nobody is doing 50 turn resets in Monster Train 2 just because it's optimal. Most players would only touch a Mewgenics turn reset when they fucked up if it was set up correctly. Only a shitty game designer wouldn't be able to find a way to set it up.

>There will most likely be ways to mitigate the losses and RNG later on.
A lot of it is just baked into the core game. 5% chances to do shit are always going to be annoying even after whatever ways to manipulate it are applied. Losing a team of cats and gear because none of your chances went well is probably going to have some ways to mitigate it sure, but you can't get back the hour spent in the run.

This game advertises a 200+ hour campaign, and a lot of the reviews confirm that what it really is is 30 hours of content, 70 hours of grinding goals, and 100 hours of making up lost runs and repeating shit until it lines up.
>>
>>732428370
You can lose things, play suboptimally and still have a fun time. Unless you're somehow incapable, which implies some mental damage. You don't have to be guaranteed a perfect run to have a good game.

i do understand. Monster Train 2 recently dipped down in reviews because of a new paid DLC but it's still really loved and the undo button is a large part of why. Nobody wants to lose an hour long run over a misclick, even in games like STS without an official reset people do unofficial resets by closing the game and reloading it.

It sounds like you're the one with mental damage. The problem is that playing optimally and losing because of pure RNG sucks. It will not be fun if your damage carry fighter gains a disease that says "if this kills something it gets an AI controlled turn and will probably kill your cats as well, and oh yeah it chains so it can kill your whole team instantly, so now you can't use them to kill shit", and we've seen that happen in the preview runs. It's not even a result of a bad choice lowrolling, an event just instantly gave the disease with no alternative and no choices.

Oh yeah the game wants you to think creatively, that's why it hides the stuff you'd need to know to make creative plans.

The whole game, as most rogue likes, is about working with the hand you're dealt. It's often not an optimal hand. And even more in this game, you can play it to your advantage. It's a huge point that even negatives have trade-offs. You could make a solo berserker build with familiars and get tons of extra turns (which generate mana) to build an autonomous killing machine. You might have to sacrifice your team to do it but there's potential to work through what you think is a broken run. Sacrifice is part and parcel for this kind of gameplay experience. If you can't handle digital loss in a rogue like, this isn't the genre for you, and that's not a flaw in the game, that's just your personal taste.

Not a single one of your points has anything to do with what I said. Every single thing you list would still be possible if the game dealt you a hand and told you what the hand it dealt you was. You are a blatant shill if you are pretending that items not telling you what they do is secretly good in a tactics game in 2026. It will get a mod to fix it and 95% of people will use the mod and the other 5% will use the wiki. 0% of players find shit like pic related themselves blind, because it was designed to make you go "oh wow how unique" as you read the wiki guide.

>>732430609
each zone has a soundtrack, and the lyrics only turn on during the boss battle. you'll be sick of "Eatin' Rats" the 10th time you fight Radical Rat or Queen Hippo, because they share the song and it was playing the whole chapter before you got to them, just without the lyrics.

I really don't care for the carriage portion, it functions similarly enough to 1's traversal, but longer and kind of irritating. Having generic heroes is nice for party comp consistency, but it also means you don't have a point in the early game where you're making the best of what you're given. Which I quite liked about the first one. Mid to late game the only difference is that you don't need to grind your levels back, which is nice. I still prefer 1, but 2 does have some nice ideas.

It was explicitly designed to be a community puzzle, so no kidding it's impossible to do yourself.

This one's actually reasonable. If you kill the boss in the first minute (happens reasonably often, esp. as Azazel) you get a very obvious audio cue. Looking around for what it means you get a fairly obvious change in the starting room, you'll want to try doing things there and there's only one unusual thing you CAN do. And then the rest is fully railroaded.

Maybe? If anything that makes it weirder that act 1 only has a single shared ch4. you'd think the earlier content would get more, not less, since it's naturally what will get played the most.
>I'll still hold onto a crackpot theory that the whole thing could shift upwards and give us an Act IV.
Hard doubt, Mcmillen had said in interviews and in a reddit AMA just 1 month ago that this is something they're planning on doing for dlc. if it's already in the game then it took a lot of gaslighting and lying about the contents.

I wouldn't mind a bit of gaslighting if it means there's even more, but yeah I hadn't combed through the information so I didn't know that.
Feels like I don't even have a concept of what the endgame would be after completing all routes. Then again people keep playing Isaac after getting Dead God. I could see myself having crazy souped up cats by the end of the game and just throwing together a team of strays to find out if I had learned anything.
>>
>>732446852
I'm betting on travelling through time with one cat and doing it all over again in NG+.

>>732447065
>Feels like I don't even have a concept of what the endgame would be after completing all routes.
Same as isaac, every character has post marks to fill so you need to beat all routes like 4 time minimum and that's if you make fully different teams of 4 each time. Some of those will be more challenging runs, like having to bring the collarless cat with you or bring a melee cat to a boss that hard counters melee.

After all unlocks? Well yeah now you just keep playing runs for the sake of it if you still enjoy it. I can't lie, the base game does look fun once you get past the frustrating learning curve stuff I'm sure it has. The replayability should be really high from the variety in random effects, like the shit water boss will be transformed into a shit ice-cube boss with different moves and everything if it's snowing on the day you fight it.
