Nah, I get it. TF2 is almost twenty years old and is a very rare case of a PvP multiplayer game lasting so long. Most players in casual have been playing for longer than some games' servers last. Newbies get utterly squashed by the pro divebomber soldier/medic, spastic MGE scouts, and min-maxed interp spies who have unnaturally-high skill levels for a genre whose services don't usually last for two decades. TF2 is a pretty cool study of what FPS multiplayer games might evolve into if none of their servers ever went down: overtuned veteran players who can only find challenge against their equals, essentially barring newbies because they don't have 10+ years of gamesense. If skill-based matchmaking is supposed to solve the problem it sure as hell hasn't been working.

I'm a day one veteran so I can't really say I'm not blind to whatever challenges new players face, but I still find this hard to believe. Just looking at all the weird RPG and MOBA-like shit in every other modern shooter I can't understand how people would find those easier to learn than TF2. As long as you head towards the front line and spam attacks in TF2 you should eventually start getting kills which slightly help your team. Teams are large, so you under-performing will go unnoticed and you won't receive ire from your teammates for it. That means you can learn the game at mostly your own pace without having to deal with the social conflict of having the spotlight put on you while you throw for your team.
It baffles me how 5v5 sweaty compfag ELO grind games are super popular but people still say TF2 is the hard one to get in to.

Modern newbies don't think being "good" at a game is helping your team, they think it's being able to 1v15 the entire enemy team because they saw some dipstick on NISLT do it (nevermind the fact they were being pocketed the entire match)
TF2's short TTK and reliance on aim/movement dissuades a lot of kiddies who think they can spam an "I Win" button and get a multikill dopamine shot. They're a lot less likely to stick around when they're being dominated (""mean spirited"" mechanic btw) by five people who can aim and don't move in a straight line.

Big part of Overwatch for me used to be socializing with random people in voice chat. Everything has just felt dead for a long time. The SR system of competitive also feels fucked up like it's almost impossible to climb from lower ranks and stuff.

Matchmaking systems feel like dead internet theory to me now imo.

Absolutely. It's rare, but they don't even try to hide it. It's barely noticeable to most players because they all have "social anxiety" or are afraid to have their account deleted because they said something mean on voice chat, so real matches are as dead silent as bot matches.

As long as it receives a new influx of players (which it does, I've met underage zoomers playing the game) then there won't be enough vets to dominate the other team, and they can learn the game and get their head around it. And then you have 24/7 team deathmatch on ctf maps which acts as a good tutorial for the game. The skill ceiling is fairly well balanced too, only the oldest and crustiest of veterans bother with the trolldier/sticky spam and they're usually countered by other vets outside of 2fort anyway.

TF2 is most certainly not a study on that, but plenty of MP games die because toxic autistic veterans take over the balancing, making it supremely unfun for everyone else. For example Natural Selection 2. TF2 is way more casual because of mechanics like random crits and meme weapons.

this is for the real autismos. Interp is a command that sets how much rollback there is. So you can confuse the server by changing it, which can make backstabs easier and fuckier.
Minmax in this case would be using spy's best loadout; kunai, dead ringer and diamondback.
Kunai overheals to 200, deadringer gives speed boost and retarded damage resistance on a fake death, and diamondback is free crits.

Taunts are just "emotes" under a different name. Hell they even shifted from being about actually taunting anyone with the introduction of stuff like high fives, rps and the viral conga/dance ones. Even at release they were more about showing the personality of the classes.

I actually think your best bet is going demoman on defense and completely shamelessly just riging doorways with stickies and right click over and over. It's how I first started getting kills when I played back in 2007. I've seen plenty of people these days say they find the game impossible to get into due to how good players have gotten.

No-medic Heavy is basically a sub class. With a medic, you're generally the main force behind your team's pushes. Without a medic, you ambush enemies in the flanks and pull out when things get dicey. I play it like fat scout with stock minigun and banana.

Maybe a little, sure but I think it's supposed to give you a moment to reflect on why someone's shitting on you. It could be as simple as your nemesis just getting lucky enough times but "there's always a bigger fish" is a fact of life. The mercs are constantly insulting and murdering each other in game and over stupid bullshit in lore. There's dozens of taunts in the shop and many of them are designed to make fun of your death in the kill cam. The whole game is pretty mean spirited but it's all in good fun.

Top top top TOP skill scouts will even kill good revved up heavies with natasha that know where they're coming from without taking damage. It's magic

High comp skill lvl players are a rare sight though. Most players from 20-5k hours playtime fall in a skill range where every now and then they're killed by noobs or their team loses.

Skilled snipers are the most common and make pubs unplayable
Skilled demos will dominate everyone on the other team if the map doesnt change first

The other classes you can deal with if you play carefully as they have limitations and counters
