I'm having trouble putting in work. I think it's because I'm really angry and depressed at my life situation, things that are out of my control. How do I regain control of my emotions so I can put it the work?
>>732484680too hard, just get a regular job
>>732484930Answer the question or remain silent, hole.
>>732484680Is godot a bad idea for wegshit? I'm thinking about them patreonbux but I know godot can be easily decompiled so it might make it it easy to take my code or assets
>>732484680After being buckbroken by the switch system I decided to implement, I raised a retard totem to remind myself how to work in 3D spaces.
I don't know how to program after 10+ years of "ideas guying" and have never made anything. I wasted my entire life.I can't even THINK of a good game.
>>732485079to be frank, no one wants your code or your assets. it is a nonsensical consideration for someone thinking about patreon godot wegshit.
Had a friend test the game and he said the new levels dragged a bit so I've been tweaking them. But that's not very exciting to look at so here's the new menu I made.

>>732486573you should make games for yourself, first and foremost. but if you think there's a market out there for it, even a small one, thinking about how to reach it will help
>>732484680Slow changes. As time goes by, the pressure and feeling of failure increase, while I know that it has a complexity that a normal game does not have.

>>732486882>As time goes by, the pressure and feeling of failure increase, while I know that it has a complexity that a normal game does not have. You are referring to your own desire for it to succeed, and a marketing pitch/hook "My game is more advanced so it has to sell"This is no guarantee. The way you check if the market wants your game is by handing it to unbiased 3rd party with a demo and seeing how the reception is.Finishing to make a fun game is a tremendous achievement in itself, without selling it. but if you depend on its success you have to treat it like a business.
>>732486240
>>732486310whats this nice game about
>>732484680Currently making a game that is a mix between Elin and Rimworld. You basically control one character or a handful of characters and navigate a procedural world to grow your character.I am prototyping occupations now. You should be able to accept an occupation called "waiter" with a predictable loop,>When a chair is free, a vacant town inhabitant is drawn to the inn>Customer sits down>You accept order>You give order to bartender>bartender is busy for 5 seconds and produces an item>You take item to customer>This earns you a few coins per completed order
>>732484872Unironically accept that most things are outside your control. Build on your body and your mind; through that you will find some measure of peace.
What do you think of the new Blender Game Engine?https://upbge.org/
>>732487920>Build on your mindWhat does that mean in practical terms?
>>732488142Learning things; try building on a skill every day to keep your mind active. For me personally what helped me combat the depression lethargy was getting into coding, and through coding math. If you set small goals every day and clearing them you get tiny bumps of dopamine. This will condition your mind to see work related objectives as a source of dopamine, and this will push you forward.
>>732488467I already view (some) aspects of gamedev as fun. solving problems for sure. but when I feel bad I don't wanna touch the engine, I want to escape to easy dopamine hits(gaming).
>>732484872Realize that nothing will ever change if you keep doing what you're doing.Consider where you'll be in 5 years given your current trajectory. Are you happy with it? If not then you need to change something.I'm not even talking about gamedev specifically. Indie gamedev as a career is largely a pipe dream. If it doesn't bring you joy then you shouldn't be doing it because the likelihood of having a major, life changing success from it is lottery tier.
But HOW do you make a game tho
>>732488679I know it's a lottery ticket, but acquiring the skills can unlock doors.Nobody except call centers and dishwashing positions would have me. I tried. I don't have education, (good) work experience and am visibly autistic.
>>732488083Might interest me as I could just transfer my assets from Unreal. How do they handle porting to consoles though ?
>>732488651That's the thing you have to combat. When we've spent years gaming as an escape we've conditioned our brains to see gaming as the only real source of dopamine, but with excessive dopamine release it will have less of an effect over time. This is why you find yourself getting more depressed over time. For me it took about a year of continuous effort before I started seeing learning and exercise as greater sources of dopamine. It takes more initial effort, but the release you get from these sources is slower and way longer lasting. Again you just have to start taking the initial small steps. Start by just doing 30 minutes of work every day. Once you've got a routine down you can start adding on more tasks. It's all about building up new routines slowly and consistently over time.
I've reached the point in my roguelike where I need to actually create lots of enemies and traps AND room templates for my procedural dungeon rooms. Long stretch of work lies ahead of me. I'm still kind of stun locked on how to best approach it.
>>732489284What's the issue with room templates?
https://youtu.be/1AffcU2qGQw?si=W3MJG9p3OCuvcR17Decided to go with my native tongue instead of broken english.
>>732488881There's no official support for porting to consoles yet.
>>732489284Most game engines have packages for room template placements. Check out Kartograph for instance, it has a ton of documentation.
>>732489492https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9zhgDsd4P4I'm quite far from release so I'll check back in a few years
>>732484680>Unreal>UnityScrew these, has anyone tried to use this crap?
>>732489446I guess I'm not sure whether to design the enemies and traps first or work on how to get the floors subdivided into optimal room sizes first, I plan to have different templates for different room sizes like Isaac has. >>732489535Godot, so I'm not going to be buying any third party utilities. Although I guess I could probably write something to assist me after I look at katrograph. Thanks.
>>732486486>stuttersmaybe you're doing live room loading? it's very weird. massive stutters randomly when moving. >key collider doesn't register when you're standing at the same place as the key, have to jump to grab it>dropping it during ladder climb is the only way to carry itNo, this is wrong. you need to understand how to code it so you can carry it all the way.>menu needs mouse support>wasd works but then you can't click z or x properly, either remove wasd or add j,k for confirm/cancel>colliders bouncing you up onto a platform if your jump isn't enough to clear the heightit's weird, fix it. make a higher jump.>vine ladders readability is bad in the forestit just looks like a vertical mess, similar to trees. maybe if you put it without trunks on both sides it'll look better.congrats on starting your gamedev journey.
>>732490054design your enemies/traps and then see what kind of room goes with that desu
>17 waitingIs it only /v/ threads or a discord is involved ?
>>732490054>Godot, so I'm not going to be buying any third party utilities.Pretty much all systems use the same algorithms. Just go through the docs and look at the system that the dev used, then use the same algo to recreate it in Godot. At the end of the day math is math.
>>732486963>3 minutes laterefund NOW
anyone know any good books for programming? to put it short, i'm incredibly incompetent at it. i understand stuff like variables, arrays, and if else statements, but that's kind of it. most of my code is from across YouTube and forums.
>haven't even written a single line of code yet>spend an hour looking for the right type of office trophy credenza to use as a reference
>>732486083That kind of cool: Japanese salaryman is kind of the reverse Italian plumber. That theme will probably be super popular with weebs.

will work on a main menu today, but I'm still not sure on how I want it to be
>>732491001You don't need books to program. Just pick what you want to make and look up how to do it. It won't come out good at first, but if you understand why its not good, you'll be able to do better next time.
>>732486653I dunno. I'm getting better at 3D and didn't feel like drawing it out ha ha. I might be replacing the 2D head at some point. The 2D head is wonderful, and I really like the style, but I made it when I couldn't model. I have modeled several enemies since then and I understand how. 3D models are a LOT easier to deal with in a 3D space (who would have guessed?). I also might not replace it, and just keep the 2D head for Osh and Ellie. I don't know. We will see what time brings.>>732486146Yeah, I spend a couple hours making it last night and replacing sound effects to use the sound effects from Salaryman Shi. This has been a really great exercise, because I am now finding out what I need to separate out from the player controller to make multiple characters viable.
looking for a good gas pump model with a detachable nozzle, seems to be nonexistent
>>732486310moe chao garden?
>>732491001Books are more or less useless compared to just writing code. I bought picrel years ago and have gone through it start to finish; I've learned more and faster by just sitting down in front of a blank file and pondering than I've got from this overpriced piece of shit.Just think of something you want to make and follow tutorials online. You'll mess up and struggle, but through that you will grow as a programmer.

>>732491158>>732491519i see. i just really hate feeling like a pants-on-head moron every time i try and write some code, and i feel even more incompetent when i have to look things up. but i've heard that stuff's just the norm, so i'm probably overthinking it all.
>>732484680I've been working on my 2D game engine last week. >Event system - Events now queue up and fire all at once >Game loop - Fixed timing so game runs the same speed >Added ability to play background music>Bundled engine references into one GameContext object>Pulled resource loading into its own interfaceI am just procrastinating from making 2D pixel assets. Game isn't fun yet. I need to make 2D 3/4 style pixel space ships to make more cards. Anyone know of a good guide for pixel graphics?
>>732491892Yeah, that feeling is never going away; it's a "the more you know the more aware you are of what you don't know" type of thing. Just tackle one thing at a time.
>>732491617The us gives 10k to founders if they show up at crunches, meets and the like. Unsure how it is for gaming only, but start up funding is top notch. You could get a partner from Australia, Canada or eu, goverment funding for whites is at an all time high. Patreon and the like might work and could be combines. I doubt banks will talk to you without collateral. How much do you need? If it's sub 100k, it's easiest to find a publisher (tech demo and slice, ideally a smol crowd), a rich guy or ask game companies, like cdpr or gog or epic (if you hate sales). AFAIK friend slop is the hottest thing among investors.
Dragoons can now fly and breathe fire. Also I made this mockup of a box for my game.
>>732484680What do you think of armor multiplying health to simulate hardness and damage reduction?Like partial light armor gives you 130% health and a full body suit 600%. Numbers are arbitrary in this example. Another mechanic would be survival (food, sleep) giving you another possibly negative multiplier. Gameplay is similar to final fantasy 12 and parasite eve. Tb arpg.
>>732492347Idk what to say. Looks old or washed up?
>>732492265I'm a solo dev. The only other person involved is the artist, and like 99% of the money spent on the game is going to her. I don't think I want a publisher, because I work a full-time job right now and I don't want to have any serious deadlines, or pressure to change things.

>go through todo list>test game>todo list only growsI swear in a year I have never ended a day with it smaller than the last
>>732492445Sounds bad. you might want damage reduction %. in your system armor reduces poison ticks as a % of your total hp. it should not affect things.then, only the relevant damage types multiply by the damage reduction to get the actual damage. That makes more sense to me but I haven't made an rpg before so look it up.>>732492879>blame a diagnosis you haven't had verifiedCheck your privilege, I have verification but I don't have money so I'm locked out of treatment. But don't bother yourself with facts, keep thinking everybody has Norway tier public healthcare and support systems.

>>732492495I think it's a consequence of the picture I took washing out the colors. I dug up an old laser printer to print the label and the blacks are surprisingly dark (at least compared to my ink printer that had no black ink) but I took the picture in a very bright room. The case itself came from some lame anime DVD my sister bought from a library when it was clearing out its inventory so, of course, the case was beat up and even had some weird Sharpie marks that I had to clean off with alcohol wipes. I didn't particularly care as I just wanted to at least get a sense on how everything looked when assembled before I make the final case art and buy the actual cases with the SD card holder. Now I need to figure out how to buy an ESRB rating.

Poison could attack base hp, not total hp, so that's an issue that can be handled. The idea is that some armor makes you near inpenetrable by some (physical) elements, but a flurry of blows will be problematic anyway. Think sword and plate. One hit to the torso should be fine, multiple will soon start to hurt disproportionately more with each successive hit.
