You had engaging gameplay for entire game, from start to finish, intuitive but also flashy active skills, everyone could play, even kids who didn't know English, go forward, kill dudes, get better skills and items, have fun. Random generation and respawns ensured that you could even start game after work and house stuff, play for half an hour killing some boss and close the game with satisfaction. Plus it was fairly intense and fast.Later games completely forgot what made Diablo II so good. It's always about "muh endgame", "muh builds", "muh competitive multiplayer", trying to reinvent the wheel while making gameplay convoluted, boring, too focused on grind and many other flaws. Closest ones were Grim Dawn and Path of Exile but even they had lots of flaws (Grim Dawn was boring past 3/4 of base game and no random generation, Path of Exile had absurdly huge passives tree and odd gameplay choices plagued by mentioned minmaxing tryhards and their "MUH MAX LEVEL ENDGAME BUILD").
