When Highguard was initially announced I made multiple contrarian threads defending it, purely because I wanted to see how anons would react to "genuine" support for the game. A part of me did unironically believe it would be successful, but that was mainly an assumption on account of it being the final TGA announcement and F2P. In retrospect I feel really bad for pretending to be excited for the game and huffing my own farts, because it fed back into the team's own delusions of grandeur. I probably indirectly convinced at least one dev at Wildlight that their pipe dream would indeed become reality. Half of the roster was alright, the guns and movement was okay, the environments looked decent, but the gameplay was fundamentally subpar and it's something so innate that you could sus it out immediately. That's my personal frustration with Highguard. If it had sauce in any department, the less-than-average combat would have been permissible. Look at Fragpunk or Splitgate, those games are mediocre too but at least they have a hook. Highguard had nothing, its entire legacy might is some backrooms deal allowing it to take the spot of a more interesting World Premiere, and a corporate culture of toxic positivty that collapsed in on itself.I don't even think the devs individually did anything wrong, it's the opposite. They have a mindset of doing everything correctly, to such an extent that they don't have a unique vision. That schizo Twitter rant the one guy posted was misguided but it really showed how easy it is for someone to live in an echo chamber, and how harshly they react when the veil is lifted. This was a couple hundred people financially staking their entire life on an impossible scenario. It's sad because you think, this could have been me, I could have wasted all that time for nothing and yet the entire duration I was CONVINCED it couldn't possibly fail.
