this scene in particular isn't meant to be cinematic. it has gameplay mechanics interwoven to the story when the bad guy insta kills him by draining all his LP with a special move. in the original SFC version the scene happens in battle screen and has all those battle mode peculiarities like announcing moves and getting permakilled tell the story. the remake is supposed recreate this scene with the gameplay bits intact, infact when victor dies it still shows -10LP or whatever his max is. but the localizer decided to curtail the dialogue part because he is a retard with zero knowledge of the game he is working on.

>our one and only job
Their job is to release a product in another market. That's it. If a suit thinks the game will sell better if every character ends their lines with "and FUCK drumpf!", that's going in the game, because the way localisation companies work is that they compete on who can offer the original publisher the cheapest price, and that means they have to do the cheapest job possible with the cheapest possible staff to break even. No publisher is shopping around looking for "good", at most they are looking for "good enough".

This latest wave of bizarre adjustment of translation started with Alexander O Smith and Vagrant Story.
That translation was particularly well received because it added a bit of Shakespearean flair to an otherwise straightforward japanese script.

It was so well received that it became a bit of a meme and he got more work and this "approach" of "adjusting" the script to inject it with a cultural slant was appropriated by newer translating generations. Except while he tried to match the old timey vernacular, other translators used that as an excuse to yassify the work and adjust it and reinvent shit as needed.
imho even Smith's work is overrated and it's become almost a self-parody with hammy lines and flowery dialogue for no reason.
But I recall this newer "I'll change it because I can do better" wave started by being adjacent to his work.
Before him the translating mistakes were due to ineptitude, soccer mom censorship or just simplification, but after him there was a desire to change stuff to "adjust" and "improve" the scripts

>>
>>733636609
The trainers say their moves for them. This is how it works in the games as well, hence why pokemon can ignore you if they're over leveled, you shout the move and they choose to act (or not).

>>733636157
This is a japanese tradition that comes from samurai duels where they were expected to shout their names and the name of their family so that the winner could cut off the losers head and return it to the family to collect the ransom. This later developed into naming their attacks, so if you killed someone who had a unique move passed down through the family you could say "I killed takashi and his wind cutter slash" to make yourself sound really impressive.

The point is gig wouldn't be such a memorable character in english if the translation was "correct" and just had generic lines like that. It's still conveying roughly the same thing but localized, the whole point of localization. Same with stuff like how they localized the prinny's in Disgaea saying dood, it gets the point across that they have a specific speech pattern that actually makes sense in english instead of trying to translate something that doesn't exist in the english language.
I'm not defending NISA entirely however since they brought us such bullshit as fucking Esty Dee

I'm okay with replacing Japanese slang, Japanese internet lingo, and casual Japanese language with English slang, English internet lingo, and English slang so long as it's not resetera garbage. I see people complaining about that a lot, but that's the best way to maintain the spirit of the dialogue.

Malicious mistranslations should get you called into the boss's office on the first offense and blacklisted from the whole industry on the second. If you brag about it on social media, the company should just skip the warning and put out a press release saying that you've been fired and the translation team is committed to bringing the game to western audiences in a form that's complete and as accurate as possible.

This is defensible since っす is a contraction of the polite copula, thus creating a kind of casual tone. Since Prinnies are obnoxious about it, the over-usage of it as a way to represent it in his speech is acceptable.

I used to think Americans just suck at translating or maybe Japanese is too different to translate properly into English

...then out of curiosity I looked up the Abe Kobo's works in english and the translation was almost perfect, like almost 1:1 yet easy to read and understand for native speakers. The majority of Japanese literature translated to English are like this, including Soseki, Mishima etc. Somehow the subtle nuance and emotions manage to cross language barriers.

(Haruki is pretty easy to translate imo, since he writes like eng->jpn Google translate)

That's when I realized the issue is just the anime localisation industry being full of the most incompetent and unprofessional people imaginable.
