My 12 year old cousin plays games with a Youtube walkthrough open on a second monitor. If he doesn't know where to go next for more than 5 seconds? Looks it up. Can't solve a puzzle in 20 seconds? Looks it up. He says all his friends play this way and he thinks anyone who doesn't is stupid, he's "got too much to do to waste time getting stuck on a video game."You guys wonder why AAA Slop Games insist on minimaps, quest markers, yellow paint, etc. Well there you have it.

White boys in particular see that the most average black girl will get a full paid scholarship to Harvard, while they need to hustle and scam like a pajeet. They can't just turn off that mentality when they're playing a game.

>>733777143I used cheat codes as a child. Kids are just like that. As for the guide shit, I'd argue game design is partially at fault. This behavior is encouraged by trial and error guessing games and padding. No one, not kids, not gamer dads, not even NEETs have time to repeat some padded out bullshit over and over until they guess right. You mention stuff like quest markers and yellow paint, but these are also symptoms of bad game design. Try playing a game built around minimap quest markers without the map. It sucks. The world ends up not being designed to accomodate organic exploration and any hints, if present at all, are garbage because devs had the crutch of map markers. Yellow paint exists not because players are retarded but because level design is a dead art and the paint is the cobbled together replacement for that skill.

Me and a friend hit the bong and played the 64 retro title Space Station Silicon Valley. We played the sewer level, and for a good twenty minutes we wandered around trying to find the next area to do something and progress the level, but just couldn't. It wasn't a secret but the slightly homogeneous level design made many places look alike and establishing a sense of progression was already a struggle. Imagine like eight long sewer hallways with characters that don't have great horizontal movement speed running around trying to find a little platform to fly up in. We bailed because it got late, but my friend played the level again after I went home and found it, which was a tad bullshit. I suppose I'm saying all this to ask, when IS it appropriate to lookup a walkthrough or guide when the merit of the challenge wouldn't be compromised and you'd only be trying to learn about some bullshit design choice that's blocking you, particularly when you as a first time player won't KNOW what's bullshit vs something obvious you missed (like in an Ace Attorney-like game)?

>>733788949It depends a lot on the specific game and the nature of the "missable."Maybe you miss out on a really cool weapon that you'd have had fun using, because you made a trivially wrong choice at some critical point. Now you're permanently locked out of getting it for that playthrough. Now, in a game where a "playthrough" might be 5-10 hours, and the game itself is really good? No big deal you just play the game again and this time make the right choice and get unlock the great weapon. When it's a 40 hour slog of cutscenes and assorted tedium to reach that point again? Yeah people are going to have a lot of incentive to look up a guide on the first time through. And then, after multiple games pull this shit, it becomes a habit. Because faggot asshole gamedevs have conditioned players to expect missable secrets, and actually looking for them yourself is boring as fuck because the game has so much walking simulation, people are going to look up guides.
>>733789528>it was rated for needing the ability to readI know many adults aged from 20s to 80s who are functionally illiterate, they struggle to put the letters together, but will insist that they can read because graduated elementary school and because after a good few minutes of trying to read a line of text out loud, they do manage to finally do it.

>>733789948>But how would you know to want it if you don't know it exists? Doesn't this necessitate to be aware of the whole arsenal options from the get-go?In addition to what the other anon said, the issue here is the repeated pattern of this kind of thing happening. You discover later on that you missed something, and can't do anything about it but seethe. So then the next time you play a similar game, you develop the instinct to check guides.Note that this particular problem largely goes away when the content isn't actually missable and merely hidden. When the game isn't completely railroaded and frequently confirms you can revisit old levels to search for secrets at your leisure, there's much less pressure to consult a guide as you go. The other half of this question, of course, is whether searching for the secrets is actually fun.A game that is mostly open, with very few permanent missables and mistakes to make, that is also fun to play and not full of cutscenes and other anti-replay features, can get away with a few of them and nobody is going to mind. But when your gameplay routine is dominated by railroaded, cutscene-heavy content with lots of dialog trees, people are going to be driven to guides.

>>733778301A little strong with the bait language there but I agree with your take. I am in fact an oldfag and I am not remotely impressed by game skill. IT's a video game, a medium of entertainment, I'm about as impressed by how good someone is at a game as how good they are at jerking off or eating cake. There has been a semantic shift over the years as well of "hardcore" which used to mean anybody who buys fully featured boxed games and engages with the medium as a hobby, but now means online competitive or skill mastery-focused, and "casual", which used to mean non-gamers who played only mobile gacha, sports, and multiplyer party games, but now refers to anybody outside of that first category.
>>733777143is this cheating? I use to love players guides because they came with so much art and cool little secrets I would have never considered to think of. I don't think they make them any more. I didn't use online guides and FAQs until like 2020 because in SMT:IV I was hard stuck with no fucking idea what to do for over half a decade. Like from release of the game I made it to I think it was the desert law land you get teleported to and was consistently walking past whatever POI you were supposed to go through or not flagging something to get into the dungeon there and finally caved in and looked up what to do. They are also awkward and view their kids almost like animals, I can only imagine how retarded a modern parent acts when it comes time to bathe their child. They also all got sold on corporate slavery so both parents work all day and the children are basically abandoned and given to the village. The public school system is filled with murderous trannies who do nothing but shame the kids for being white and straight. Modern childhood is suffering at the hands of misanthropes.

>>733794419>Secrets are meant to be hard to find and not everything is intended to be experienced on a single playthrough.Pablum.I'm talking about specific dynamics and issues that happen in certain games designed certain ways and you're over-generalizing about the very idea of secrets and how they always should be. This is exactly the kind of lazy thinking and logic that leads to the bad designs I'm talking about.>Games are meant to be a fun activity you enjoy engaging in, not a checklist you need to 100% and then move on like it's a job.I completely agree. It's not my fault that games are badly designed, that's what I'm talking about. The difference is that I'm blaming developers for game designs that encourage and TRAIN players to treat the games like a checklist of content to consume. You're blaming the players only for having the wrong mindset and not >I'm playing a game right now called Dungeons of Blood & Dream Well no shit. Roguelikes have procedurally generated content and the entire design philosophy around those games involves permadeath and replaying newly-generated dungeons every single time. That's the polar opposite of hand-crafted content I've been describing. They're also a very niche subgenre of games.

>>733796926why would anyone vote for that retarded couch fucker when everyone knows he is just Thiels pawn?
>>733794315Good luck, same for Gen Alphas
I use guides for help but I give it more like a half hour. If something isn't clicking for me after a half hour I deem it bad design and is ergo not my fault. For example I had to look up 4 things for Silent Hill 2, meanwhile I didn't have to look up a single thing for Silent Hill 1. Therefore, on my totally unbiased rating system, Silent Hill 2 is worse.
>>733797413What specific dynamics and issues are you talking about? I get if something is overly esoteric to the point that basically nobody gets it, hell I just played a game called Verho that has one in it you have to read a specific plaque and then go to a specific zone with a specific weapon equipped for a 1% chance of an NPC to spawn that gives you a secret weapon with absolutely nothing to indicate to the player that it is chance based and not just you doing something wrong but it sounds like you are making generalizations about always looking shit up.Dungeons of Blood & Dream is what I used as a specific example because beyond just the normal randomness of roguelikes there are a ton of constants you can take advantage of from the very start of the game that you simply are not aware of, a lot of the game is not about unlocking stuff but discovering how to do something you could always do. The entire magic system is based around using runes in a specific sequence, and you have all the runes available at the very start, for example.
