The rings allowed you to finish the games without making mistakes either (minus the last bosses). They also pushed the hardware pretty often. They were simply good games.Gunstar Heroes is kind of broken compared to all that, you have to know the game system and how to abuse it since Treasure turns every boss fight in every one of their games into a puzzle. What really turns me off is that the game is about guns but you are far better off doing physical attacks most of the time as they do 10x more damage. And all the graphical tricks rely on the column scroll or sprite multiplexing, which Vectorman did better (interestingly, even there the physical attacks were more preferred because they did overwhelmingly more damage, only the rare bolo gun stacked up to the jet boots damage wise).

I can't beat Expert+ songs reliably so I tend to hover around Expert and Hard depending on how the song is mapped. Don't know if it's merely a skill issue on my part or people just have an easier time with quest headsets or something (I'm on index). Most songs seem to be made for Expert+ only which is a shame because I can't play them without having to cope with the No Fail modifier. Wish you could find songs easier though, beastsaber used to have search function with filters and stuff but I guess they removed it for some reason so it's a bit harder to find anything interesting. Other than that it's alright. I don't really play rhythm games.
