You've made progress anon? Do show us. Demo Day is tomorrow and v3 submissions open on the 15th. You're sending your game to both right? Your game better be in tip top shape ok?
Bump
>>734332640No progress for 13 years now.I'm starting to think that making games is not for me.
>>734335152Never too late to start
>>734332640I have all the skills to make a game except music. If my game genre sort of needs good music should I even bother attempting to learn? I dont want slop and I can't afford a composer but if its impossible to get good enough in 1-2 years i feel like trying is going to be a waste of time that i should pour into my other skills.
>>734335152During that time you either had the urge to make different projects on other genres (do it) or you didn't (quit games)
>>734335793Define "good music"
>>734335695What's the point?I'm just gonna start another project then abandon it soon after.>>734335793Just wait for another 2-3 years for AI musics.Otherwise fucking work a few months for the music if you trust in your project.>>734335841I'm tired of starting project & abandoning project.I just want someone to work together with so we can push each others to finish the game. But I can't find anybody like that.
>>734335982>I'm just gonna start another project then abandon it soon after. >I'm tired of starting project & abandoning projectThere's your issue. Just commit. That simple. If you want someone to work with you, you need to show off what you've done regardless of how incomplete it is.
How do I make video games?
i fuggin love countering enemy attacks. it's a fascination. i already know 0 players will do this next dd, but i don't care
>>734332640>Demo Dayhttps://itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-67>/v/3https://thev3expo.com/
>>734335925Ace combat, nier. This is obviously unattainable but I like kota hoshinos weird ambient stuff which I feel I could maybe get an appromixation of. I have professional skills in other fields so I'm not delusional about how difficult high level skill aquisition is, I'm just wondering if it's even worth trying while im doing 50 other things.>>734335982I dont want to use slop because I can tell when other people use it in other fields and it makes me think the whole product is lazy shit.
>>734336569I'm sure you could ask around and find somebody that would help you with music. Or the very least lower your expectations for yourself
>>734336643I think if ai didn't exist I'd be willing to blow 5-10k on random musicians but these days I have no idea if they are just going to take the money and give me slop.
>>734336862Don't pay upfront. Simple as.
>>734332640Whats the v3 deadline?
>>734336862>Listen to music>It's good>But it's actually AI>Now it's suddenly bad despite being the same musicYou're a fucking poser
Anybody here relying on making games (for yourself) as a job?How did you make it work?
>>734337056No one will ever like that slop, cry harder.
>>734337056Not really, I can detect AI in my fields of expertise in cases where normal people can't. I can't for music outside low level slop but I assume a professional musician can, I dont want musicians to have the same feeling I do when looking at slop so I don't want to use it.
>>734337209YesIt hasn't (yet)I'm not very far along in the whole process
>>734336164looks very satisfying
>>734336985March 15th to May 23rd.
>>734337751thank you
I'm not sure if I'll actually do anything but I like to imagine making a video game. I started by making a list of video games and mechanics I like. Is that a good place to start?
>>734338173sure, that's where it all startsthink it dream it do it
want to say thanks to the touhou x crusader anon, as I'm now using point entities in trenchbroon to place torches and doors and it's way more comfortable than doing so manually.also making progress on the prologue area (picrels) still a lot of work left... need to split it in pieces, place the light probes and check how to make the dungeon area less dark, don't know if I should put more lights or just increase the range of the current ones. I'm currently making tests for thatalso, since it takes place in a very high area, I need to find a way to obscure what's below. Since this level is meant to be played at night it might be a non issue, guess I could just place some dark, opacity = 1 clouds in therefinally I need to improve my texture work and make the mountain look more rocky and less plain, but I can worry about that later>>734338173sure, doing that is a nice way of having reasons to get motivated to make a game
>>734338173the only thing that stands between you and your game is time. if you are a young man in your 20s than you should be confident, you have an ample supply of it.
>>734337056yeah, you got gypped by a faggot in that scenario. you could just pay a much cheaper price for your own subscription.
>Failure:Your store page has failed review because your Early Access answer doesn't explain how the pricing will change during and after Early Access.>Even if you haven't decided yet, we suggest making some indication of which way you're leaning (e.g. "We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features", or "We don't plan to change the price").>Failure: Your store page has failed review because your Early Access answers reference specific currency prices. Users in different regions see prices in different currencies. Don't use a price in a specific currency; instead, give customers an overview of your plans (e.g. "Price will not change when we leave early access" or "We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features").What the everliving fuck. >“Might be slight increase in price in future. ”isn't specific enough but when I say>"$1-2 increase in future"then that's too fucking specific.
>>734339838Well yeah that's too vague, when is the future, during or after early access, and are you just gonna increase it arbitrarily without coinciding with a content update? And what does $1 mean, 1 australian dollar?
>>734336985Cross posting from aggy:Submissions open up for our show March 15th to May 23rd. We'll have two rounds of submissions. One for our main trailers and one for our rapid fire section. Main trailer requirements: >Be under (2) minutes >Include game name/title >Must include shill Link in submission >Trailer must be made after March 1st, 2026 For our rapid fire section (new this year). Submissions open up May 1st. This is for games that have already released, are coming soon, or are still in progress. Requirements are >Be between 10-15 seconds long >Must include dev name in submission >Must mark your clip as "in progress, coming soon, or out now"
Decided on a whim to add multiplayer (mainly so I can have an excuse to try and get a PS Vita port for no reason). Now you can save a nickname (even creating a random one if you try to enter an empty name) and select a character from a roster of eight characters (and four secret ones).Have some Fygoon concept art.

>>734340374Can you submit to both with the same game?
>>734341013Both of what? Demo Day and /v/3 or submit to both trailer sections?
>>734341013Both sections, sorry
>>734338745>>734338834>>734339132Thanks Anons. I'm both socially and mentally retarded but I get ideas often.
>>734341216No. Gotta pick one. The same dev can submit two different games one for each section, but the same game can't be submitted to both.
Working on mirrors right now. Decided to start with the visuals since if I know where to spawn the reflection visual, then I know where to teleport/duplicate the player. I've actually mostly finished multi-mirror reflections, but that was on my work computer, and I forgot to push my work today to Github, so look at what I had ready yesterday.
>>734338834Hey Goblin Anon, I have a question for you:You've mentioned before using boids logic for your enemies to improve the way they move together, but I'm curious how that works with pathfinding? Doesn't it lead to situations with them falling off stuff/ getting stuck?
>>734342124>mirrorsHell yeah another JT fan
>>734335152What makes you say this?
>>734332640Trying to come up with a basic magic and element system. If I would describe my game in one word:>live action vagrant storyI'm still under the impression that arpg are often of very bad quality and could be fixed easily5
>>734342702yeah they can eat the walls and fall through pits, so you should also include some check for that to not happen. In my case I cast a few rays every so often to ensure that doesn't happen
>>734336862You can test music and honestly it's easy to spot. 5k should be more than enough for good indie music. You might need to look around a bit. I traveled with gf in a new country and female as she is she instantly spotted some street musicians that actually really good. (not for a game, but for a website sound profile)
>>734340295what the fuck am I supposed to say then?
>>734344613They literally gave you instructions on what to say. Many games use "Price will not change when we leave early access" or "We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features" word for word.

Bingo betty exists and is making progress, I still can't quite show the new stuff just yet but things are getting closer to how I want them before I do a big reveal trailer/post/Steam page overhaul
>>734345038Why the fuck give us the option to write up what to say if the only thing they accept is this very specific phrase? Just fucking have a checkbox.
>>734348537Dude I handed you that easy solution because I'm assuming you're esl. They explained in very clear terms exactly why your last two attempts didn't go through. They told you that you weren't specific enough about the TIMING of your possible price increases and instead you went full retard and decided to elaborate on the price increases for whatever reason. You might as well just copy and paste their homework if you still don't get it.
>>734348061no its my game.
>>734332640making my first enemy and I have no clue how I should setup the enemy itself.Should I use a Characterbody2D or a Rigidbody2d? Its just going to be a simple proof of concept sort of thing, a fish that floats around inside of a body of water and chases the player if its detected.

>>734348982>Am I going to use physics with collisions and bouncing n shit?Rigidbody>NoNot rigidbodyI would probably say characterbody in your case though I don't know literally anything about it, does your player use physics?
>>734348863>decided to elaborate on the price increases for whatever reason.because they fucking told me to be specific. Saying the price may increase is to fucking vague, ok fine it'll increase by $2-3, oh gee golly wiz that's tooo fucking specific. They system is fucking retarded. If the ONLY answers they accept is >(e.g. "Price will not change when we leave early access" or "We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features")Then just have those options and a check box.
>>734349671Oh my god dude do you not have a single bit of reading comprehension in you? How do you even game dev like this? Am I being trolled? I feel like a broken record here. They asked you to be more specific about when you're changing the price (i.e. "increase in price in future" is too vague) the first time around. This can be inferred by the examples they provided which are clarifying when exactly the price increases are happening (with content updates, or not at all). You misread that and mistakenly thought you had to clarify how much the price was increasing. Then they told you no, no one wants to know that, they just want to know WHEN your price might changeAnd then you came here to complain. Apply yourself. Seriously.
>>734349464>rougelike deckbuilder slopEWWW
>>734349671>>734350260And to answer your checkbox thing, I was just saying that many games use those predefined answers as a default cuz it works, but steam allows you to write anything because you can be specific as much as you want when it comes to the TIMING. I have seen early access games with massive fucking roadmaps in their early access answer like "In march of 2025, we will be releasing a major content update which will necessitate a large price increase to reflect the growing state of the game" or whatever. Remember that you're writing this to be on the front page for customers. Steam is just approving it.
>>734350260it's retarded PR crap and has nothing to do with actual game dev, there is literally nothing wrong with "may increase price in the future".
>>734351069Well thats really just indicative of how much you care about your presentation to be honest. Yeah it's PR, so what...? Selling your fucking game is part of actual game dev no? If you don't care about that then you shouldn't be paying a hundred bucks to put your game up on steam. If I'm a customer I want to know if or when this game might get a big price increase and if i should be jumping in and buying it right now before then. Simple as. Steam is actually doing you a huge favor by declining your retarded descriptions and instead you're whining about it.
How much planning do you guys do before level development? Specifically working on a 3D game and trying to get a general flowchart and theme for each ready before I start building levels. Going to do the "Build the first level last." approach.
>>734332640>Demo DaySo we're really dropping all pretense that this is just /agdg/ on /v/ now?
>>734352413/agdg/ is the daily thread, de/v/ is the every other day and sometimes daily thread.
>>734352267That seems like a good idea.I honestly only have broad concepts for areas/setpieces written down loosely, with no thought given to how they're supposed to relate or connect. What are you making your flowchart in?
>>734352413Always has been
>>734352413They're separate in my mind. I just included it in the OP since it's a dev related event and is happening tomorrow.
>>734352413The /v/ thread is an offshoot of /agdg/. It's friendlier so more progress post appear here. Most devs that post on /agdg/ migrate here to actually get some feedback and eyes on their projects.Imo these /v/ threads should pop up on Friday/weekends. Having them near daily doesn't give devs much time to have something new to show.
>>734332640>v3Stop pushing this literal leftoid tranny shit, you fucking idiot.
>>734352063>If I'm a customer I want to know if or when this game might get a big price increase and if i should be jumping in and buying it right now before then. Simple as.Yea and how is "may increase price in the future" not enough? I have to fucking add "as we add new content" to magically make it understandable to some braindead retard? It's fucking EA, stuff is still being added obviously.
>>734352934Yeah I want to make sure I have a general idea of how everything connects including potenial "locks" or required backtracks be before I start building levels for at least some semblance of cohesiveness.I'm using drawio to make the flowchart. Also linking specific to a .odt design document and relevant Obsidian files for actually fleshed out planning.
>>734353284Gotcha. I should stop shilling Demo Day too for the same reason, yes?
>>734353284throw some more temper tantrums about it
>>734353284If you actually participated in the community you'd know it's just as much as part of it as DD. Nice attempt at dramabaiting
>>734353314Yes that's obviously not enough because if left too vague it creates the notion that you might just raise the price whenever you feel like it, like say on a random saturday evening in 2027 with no updates at all for the last few months. When you say "as we add updates" you are pledging to the customer that you will only raise the price if it comes with updates that actually add more value to the game. You may think that sounds super obvious but there are games in early access which have had no updates for the last 5 years, steam even had to add a store indication for this.

>>734354758Make a porn game so good you have your final goon on release.
>>734354758Start jerking off to things that actually turn you on. Like, imagine you're just getting home from work, and there's a strange woman in your house. What would she be doing that'd make you forget she's a home invader and give you a boner that wants to sex her?In my case, its women who wear tight jeans, pour milk all over her crotch, and then uses sheep shears to cut the jeans crotch open and she gets on all 4s and starts twerking.Sure, that's weird as fuck to most people, but it's the one thing a strange woman could do to make me forget that she broke into my house. So that's what I jerk off to. Thank God for AI because there are not many videos out there that fit that very specific description. Has to be sheep shears, cannot be scissors and I hate that I wasted $500 on a custom video and the stupid bitch couldn't read basic instructions.

All physics libraries are designed around convex shapes. Idk the philosophy behind why they include concave as an option and then warn everybody how buggy it is. >>734364160What for? But yeah I get those woes. I have dynamic IP and setting up a Playstation devkit was a massive pain because of that.
>>734363896Plenty of doujin games consist of royalty free music, or music you pay a license for.
>>734364514I'm doing multiplayer tests for the game, server hosting and the like, and while things work the biggest issue isn't even anything I'm doing; shitloads of modern ISPs and routers won't let you forward ports. I got steam connections working, sure. Things are smooth as hell and direct connect is consistent, but if I want a server browser I host myself? If I want to host in a way that doesn't screw over GOG users? Gotta have port forwarding. It's not even conceptually hard, they just won't fucking let you do it.
>>734364707You don't have to have a server browser
Look deeply in to my ball. You will progress today.
>>734368093Yeah but now that I can I want to, I already have tools for dedicated servers to begin with.

>>734364707Steam P2P uses a relay server, no? So why would you set up port forwarding instead of a relay server? The way I did it in my game was using mongoose to treat my game as a websocket client on desktop, then just set up a standard node server to handle sessions and all that jazz.
>>734371361Because it's not just steam servers being hosted, it's also GOG ones. Though even dedicated servers with something like Fishnet via steam require port forwarding.
>>734371694Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. You need some kind of NAT traversal. So for both Steam and GOG it may be worthwhile to look into setting up a common, public STUN server. I think after your server processes the connection, you can still pass the data to Steam's network since I assume you want to use its features, but at the end of the day it's not 2005 anymore. Most players aren't gonna want to port forward even if their ISP lets them.
Testing some of the background objects. I want the first few levels to leave a great impression. It's still placeholder art, but I think this is a good first step.
>>734371694GOG has cross play stuff but you have to use their netcode for underlying multiplayer, IIRC. You might have to just screw over GOG players, it's not like they matter anyway.
>>734347223YGGermage
>>734364707Do you even have the players to bother with mp?
>>734372930Platform specific APIs keep coming up, but what I suggested was a generic web server. True P2P doesn't exist anymore. You have to send the data to a middleman server on a public IP. This kind of sucks in some ways, but it's also a basically free way to handle crossplay if you play your cards right.
>>734372430>>734372930I figured it'd come down to a combination of stuff like that, god knows it'd be less of an issue if there wasn't an expectation of dedicated servers. Thanks though.>>734373295Absolutely. 90% of the time I get someone asking about the game it's asking about multiplayer. I mostly expect four-player co-op sessions since that's what MP is balanced around, but that's all working for the most part.
how do i get better at thinking intuitively for game design? i already watch general game dev videos

I've been making a couple animations for Ellie and Shi to make them not look like Osh clones. Here is Ellie's new Idle pose.
>>734376029cute idle
>>734376029bro i hate your stupid characters heads so much something about them just rustles my jimmies, you are clearly a competent dev tho but fuck i get like angry when i see the characters, they are literally living in my head rent free with their funny 2d heads bro
>>734376129Thanks! Here is Shi, checking his watch to make sure he isn't late.>>734376380Yeah, you've made that clear multiple times lol. Thanks for thinking of me!
I uploaded a 'demo' build a few days ago on my itch io, its a lot more quality than quantity compared to my first demo release. Should i wait for this demo day to share the link? My itch still has my games first demo that I shared on here a month ago, the differences are night and day between the two demos in terms of optimization and game feel
>>734376550shi looks good tho
>>734376550
>>734376380same feeling. I think his style would be better suited with an amorphous character like Plok
>>734335793What genre? I’m struggling to think of a genre in which music is THAT important. Music is nice, but come on now.
>>734376029she looks like the stinky weird girl in my elementary school class. what are you thinking with these characters, man?and the main character just looks like a generic 2000's webcomic penny arcade rip off
>>734377909If you are inferring a smell from that WEBM, I think you might have synesthesia. Anywho, the general vibe I am going for is not too far off from a webcomic, so, I mean, that's not horrible to hear. Here is an animation I made for said webcomic-looking guy when you wait too long to move.
>>734377418My Nigga Plok getting posted on /v/ in 1996+30?still have my childhood cart somewhere that game is great
>>734376029Pls give her more feminine traits. She still looks like a man bodywise
>>734332640>You've made progress anon?Haha, there is always tomorrow
>>734378425I'm going to ask you to not have your character's mouth open and a potentially inferred stroking gesture from his fist with it being so close to his mouth. I have no other issues with your game but please for the love of God fix that idle animation.
>>734335793Music comes later, you want a product to show the world your vision and if you are not good at music you can just ignore it
>>734378723Why? Any suggestions? I've given her boobs, which is more than, say, Dot from Animaniacs has. I'm not trying to make her sexy.>>734378919Okay. I'll change it.
I WANT TO PROJECT HOP IM SO SICK OF LOOKING AT MY GAME
>>734379134>Why? Any suggestions? I've given her boobs, which is more than, say, Dot from Animaniacs has. I'm not trying to make her sexy. Can you just make her slimmer?
>>734379361If you jump ship you will just have two unfinished games, what is your game and why are you disappointed in it
>>734379615She's literally a kid what the fuck are you talking about. You want her to be a walking stick?
>>734379134The hips. Figure out something with the hips.As it stands she's just a dude with long hair
>>734380159To me she just looks fat
>>734376029Please listen, man. Your character's are violently unappealing.Your game mechanics look fun, but for god's sake, swap the characters.
>>734379134you're being baited by trolls who want you to sexualize her so that normies steer clear of your game and your sales drop to zero (0) like onirismkeeping it cute and cartoony gives you a better chance at becoming hat in time popular, just ignore the 'tards
>>734379134The FACE, anon.It's hideous!
>>734376550Honestly, you should just drop the other characters and make Shi the protagonist
>>734379134AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>734380456Not me. I would like for anon to succeed, and I would like to play the game myself, but fucking hell, the characters are awful.
>>7343784253 months in MSPaint
>>734381960>Make it appeal to the Japanese and weebsclassic 4chan
>>734381960Much less gay
>>734381960I don't know what you want or what you are trying to convey in this image. Is this your definition of what a "better" character would look like? What are you telling me by giving him anime eyes, shading on the hair and making the body slimmer?>>734380520Not my character. Salaryman Shi is a game made by another /v/ dev that already exists. I simply put him in the game as an unlockable after speaking with the dev.
>>734378425
>>734382308Literally anything is better, Anon. It doesn't have to be anime eyes, it just has to not look so offensive.
Thoughts on FTE, ioquake3 or Spearmint?
>>734382524I will now play your game
>>734382438>Tai, but somehow more gayKek
Added an easter egg. This mysterious helper lady will chew you out if you choose not to pick the hourglass up. I might also extend it to all the other hourglasses in the level, so you'll eventually lose and be forced to restart.i also just discovered a bug. see how the player has over a minute remaining after the dialog ends? yeah that's not supposed to happen. fuck everything.
>>734382308Honestly, anon, you should do this>>734381960>>734382524Just try wiping away the face and redraw it a few times in 2D. Kill your darlings etc.
>>734383343>i also just discovered a bug.aaaaaaaand I already fixed it lmao. turns out it was much easier to fix than i thought it would be.
>>734382308>speaking with the devHow do you meet other devs like this?
Fuck
>>734383879Meetups and discord.
>>734383917>Meetups Sure as shit ain't happening lmao>DiscordsDespite the meme I do hear this. Recommend any good ones?
>>734335793AI music is somewhat workable now, but you still need to know a few things so that you can do some editing.example:https://suno.com/s/ZrNCp9E4715F8Erqcut up into these:https://vocaroo.com/18DYdqUJ67rShttps://vocaroo.com/1c64OS2BI4A0
Sorry for the freeze at the end? What do you think so far? You can play this yourself on demo day if you feel like it.What could I do in general to make the game feel better to play? I'm not at the level of modeling environments or texturing yet, but I can try and make the gameplay or animations feel better.
>>734379713I dont post a ton anymore but this one, the lsd dream emulator-ish walking simulator with some mini games in itIm not disappointed, but setting up the rendering stuff for each level takes forever cus the surface shaders + post processing are connected, so I cant just copy/paste pre-made volume profiles for a lot of levels and doing this masking portal effect to load into new areas requires a really specific set up, especially since im hoping to do it with 3D volumes/shapes rather than 2D planes like most portal effects in games.I'm mostly just complaining because its a lot of repetitive tedious stuff right now, my next games planned out and I'm working on it a little bit here and there, but I wont do any serious work on it until this game is done>>734380589I think they look fine, I think the blue guys outfit could be less blue, but def not awful. reminds me of dreamcast games.
>>734384583I like it!
>>734383343>words words words words>just shitty attempts at humorwould alt f4 and refund
Well now
>>734384980well well well
Still working on overhauling the way my game logic works, moved to an entity-component based system. A bit of a pain to refactor but I think it'll be worth it, since before I just had a bunch of different lists and it wasn't easy to keep a consistent reference to an object and I was repeating logic all over the place. Hoping to wrap this up and work on actual gameplay again, like adding a mage enemy that buffs nearby enemies with more health and damage.>>734336164Noice, looks fun. Countering is always cool.>>734338834I mean if it's dark enough it probably won't matter. IMO I think your textures look pretty decent, might look less tiled if the mountain walls are less flat or something.>>734340928It's a neat effect, but some of the anti-aliasing looks a little odd, particularly on the top of the railing, and the right side of the airship.>>734356295Looks sick, congrats on the release!
>>734356295Good job
>>734369059>is there anything worse than learning 3d modeling?lol, learning how to make music. If I ever get serious about making a game, I'll have to hire someone or make some cheap bullshit.
>>734385581No no, I think 3d modeling is worse. I've tried both and found more success with making music.
>>734369059I found it slightly easier
Just testing an idea here.Does this sound interesting to you?Top down 2D roguelike action game. You carry nothing but your backpack with you, and you use your backpack to attack.Your movement speed, attack damage & attack speed is determined by the weight in your backpack.Your loot will buff your character during the run, or you can choose to grab the valuables so you can buy upgrades at base.
>>734386202K
>>734385581music isn't that hard, i'd say.what do you think you're having trouble with?
>>734386202There's already an entire genre of backpack battlers
I feel sad
>>734386780It's not idle battler.
>>734379134>>734376029Your character isn't ugly, but she isn't appealing either. She looks like this KND character.Look at Hat Kid, Beebz, Frog gun girl, or the other cute video game girls for inspo.
He LOST
