Did gamefreak/nintendo have any control over this? I feel like they were too afraid people liked it more than the traditional handheld pokemon games so they screwed it over.

It still makes a decent amount of money probably. They screwed up taking this long to add new Pokémon, and the whole battling and candies system irked off a lot of people I'm sure
