Because the player turned on analog controls. But the game is meant to be played with tank controls, exactly because of what we see in the OP. However, even with the analog option enabled, if you continue to hold down the direction you were holding down before the camera change, jill will continue to move in the same direction. They intentionally added that as a small measure to make it less awkward. The player must be constantly correcting after the camera switch up for Jill to spin around like that.

The key thing was that back there was a strong incentive to do fixed camera perspectives because you can use pre-rendered backgrounds to get around hardware limitations for graphics. And when you have fixed camera perspectives tank controls become the one way to avoid the problem depicted in OP's webm.

In the Crusader games left and right directions are coded in relation to the protagonist and where he’s facing. So if he's facing north then pressing A will move him left and D right. But if he's facing south then A will move him right and D left. Same thing with east and west. I only got used to that shit towards the end of the second game.

Actually you wouldn't have this issue with the modern controls either. Even with modern controls, if you continue to hold down the same direction while camera changes, Jill will still continue to walk in the same direction (forward). Then, when you want to turn, you simply let go of the joystick for a split second, and move the joystick in the direction based on the camera perspective where you want to go.

Newer games have better written control schemes, basically the answer was to reset the algorithm when you release the control stick. Forward is forward based on the direction of the character, until you let go of the control, and now forward is north of the camera. It’s much more intuitive than always keeping the control stick forward of the character model.
