They really should have made Mario Kart Worlds's gimmick be that they open up Mario Kart to all Nintendo IPs and turn it into super smash kart. Forget the open world thing, just make scifi Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero courses, some bright and flashy kirby courses, tours through Pokemon regions, etc. And go crazy with items and introduce a whole bunch of new ones, with options to pick and choose which ones are active.
