I went to a number of cons in the late 90s, Otakon circa early 2000s I lived through pretty much the best time to be alive in the fandom. I have to feel that going to one after 2012 would be a bit like trying to go back and play WoW again post 2021 and would destroy what little part of my soul still exists thanks to the good memories.

Most cons are for secondaries, going to one is dumb. All the cosplay is shonen trash or seasonal fotm that got big on Tiktok, all the merch can be purchased for 5x cheaper on amiami, mandarake, yahoo JP and more. All the art is usually western garbage aping JP artists, all the voice actors are signing stuff are 9/10 times dub actors with the very very rare 1/10 being a real seiyuu and that seiyuu usually gets so packed by people that you have to try a lottery to even have a chance of getting something signed. Also the odor and the terrible food that also happens to be jacked up like you are at a baseball game or something. Western cons are for low iq normalfags. Though good conventions do exist in the east.

Conventions used to be about nerds socializing, making real connections and forming communities. The problem with cons aren't cosplayers.The problem is it gets really stale after a while, specially if you go alone. The same stands, the same arcade machines, the same consoles and events. You could go once and see it all, nothing would change. They could innovate or something and bring the nerds together like make a massive WII Sports Tournament, or have a massive rave with Anime music or a "who wants to be a Otaku?" trivia and stuff, but they won't. I felt bored & out of place I stopped going. I had more fun in a Bouncy Castle for adults by myself than going to a Con, man.

ive only ever been to an anime con 1 time with a stranger i met at an asian festival a few weeks prior who encouraged me to go. he carried around a MOC life size miku doll in a strolleri bought a miku plush and the FLCL ost on vinyl. i also bought a miku keychain but i lost it at the con or maybe it was stolen idk.they had an arcade with everything on free play including a project diva cabinet which was the first time i ever got to play project diva arcade on the real hardware.there was a panel with some VAs i won't name as to not narrow it down but i knew both of them and didn't know they were going to be there so it was unexpected and nice.me & that dude never spoke again after that but i was glad i left the house and traveled for once. hope he didn't kill himself because that miku doll is worth at least a couple grand.
