Is it the roster? the music? the more rural japan setting where modernity isnt ever present and people try to preserve traditions?

What makes this the game people always go back to time and again as the example of where the series peaked?
>>
>>>/vp/
>>
>>736726142
As a kid, it felt truly magical to beat the elite 4 and then being allowed to explore the map of the first game and collect 8 more badges for a rematch.
>>
>>736726142
because it had alot to offer.

>2 entire regions
>>villian is not a self entitled cuck or not a "look how friendly i am" onions faggot
>>this game does not make the game too easy for you but also not too hard
>music is just right
>good post game stuff
>>pokemon designs do not look like digimon nor shitty
>the story is well thought out

that's some of the reasons why, for me that is, idk about others
>>
>>736726397
Pokemon Stadium 2 was also a really good place to take your monsters after beating the game. I think Stadium's importance to gen 1 and 2's post game playability is severely underrated these days.
>>
>>736726142
You had to be there, hence why zoomers seethe about it constantly and copy paste walls of text about retarded shit nobody ever cared about like how the enemies don't scale correctly for their gay challenge run or how they can't autistically plan their """team""" because they can't get a water stone.
>>
>>736726590
yeah sorry about that, forgot about Pokemon Stadium 2.
>>
>>736726142
Riding the train across regions was SOVL
>>
>>736726695
No need to apologize, you honed on key parts of the game. I don't think many people played Stadium 2, desu - but I see it as a key reason why those first two gens worked. Gen 3 onwards not having a true equivalent really hurt them.
>>
>>736726628
Yep. They'll never get it. Gen 1 or gen 2. They'll never be a part of a craze like it in their lives. It was a game made with the full expectation that it could be the very end of Pokemon. How were they supposed to know the fad would continue? So they put their heart (gold) and soul (silver) into it.

Most satisfying ending. And you're right about the Japanese setting too. The first generations weren't shy about Japanese and that was part of the appeal.
>>
>>736726142
For me it's the childhood memories. Pretty much every kid I knew back then played these games so we were in a way all playing it together

Because it was the only vertical sequel without any compromises.
They said "what if we took Red/Blue and added more cool shit?" and they did. It just felt mind blowing as a 10 year old to ride the Pokemania wave and then get a sequel like that.
They didn't cut out half the cool shit from the last entry to make way for one-off gimmicks. They didn't cut half the Mons because 3D IS HAWWDD :((
Starting Ruby for the first time and realizing pic related at the start was the only moment i would interact with real world time for the rest of the game was when i knew the honeymoon with the franchise was over.
>>
>>736727116
Day/night cycle adds nothing to the games
>>
I think the whole rural vibe contributes more than we may have noticed as kids. From the herbal medicines and Kurts Aprikot pokeballs to the Eevee sisters and the whole towers business Johto and its far more wooded and winding paths is keeping its past alive in a way Kanto kind of steamrolled over and forgot. So moments of modernity like the Goldenrod Radio station and the Train standout a lot more.

As an adult i can look back at all the games and go "Oh Diamond and Pearl was like that because it represents the cold, rocky parts of Hokkaido and thats why there are not-ainu in Legends Arceus" and its good most of the time but i feel G/S has the vibes down great.

But i also grew up in the english countryside where history is a bit more preserved so maybe that made it resonate a bit more than R/B's ultra clean and modern -for its time- setting.
>>
>>736727116
Honestly if they didn't go so hard for a sequel, and didn't have Iwata to allow it with his code wizardry, I am convinced Pokemon really WOULD have ended up just another fad. I genuinely cannot picture a world where Pikachu was relegated to a Smash Bros character like Captain Falcon is and the series died off.
>>
>>736727203
I don't care.
I was cool. Keep it in.
>>
>>736727203
Nigga are you high its one of the most consequential choices a sequel ever added. Pokemon will only appear at certain times of day and some will only evolve at certain times of day. It was a virtual world but the real world played a small part in your adventure.

I still remember getting up really early on Boxing Day morning and catching some rare bug type or something you could only find at hours no kid would be awake unless they were at school and all my friends thought i used a game genie because they had no idea in a pre everyone has the internet world that the pokemon existed yet.
>>
>>736727116
Pretty much this.
It also really is the fact that is was a sequel, when I was young I played Blue/Yellow and I was amazed, it was great, it was the start of pokemon mania, I was excitedly watching the anime on TV while eating my strawberry jam sandwiches.
Then they release Silver/Gold and holy shit did it add new things, new pokemon, new region the graphics are like 1000 times better, the qualities of life are a million times better, everyone is playing it and enjoying it and figuring out shit and IS THAT A RED GYARIDOS AND YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN POKEBALLS AND PLUSHIES.
That's my mindset as a child, it was just the next big thing, even the gimmick of Crystal adding animated portraits was a mind melting experience because I was not used to such graphics, back then that shit was good looking.
I feel the biggest part of why it was so beloved is that it was what everyone wanted from a Pokemon game: more of the same stacked on top, you could still go back to the old region and basically see how the story unfolded after you dominated Kanto.

Personally I still prefer the 3rd generation, Hoenn was a much better game, I feel Emerald is where the entire series peaked even in spite of being pre-physical/special split.
I can't deny however that little Anon was very very disappointed when I found out that you could not go visit Johto or Kanto, it really felt like a cop-out, something really was missing.
>>
>>736727203
You are so fucking retarded and you don't understand what the fantasy of Pokemon was for children who grew up with it.
>>
All i want is a Gold and Silver that has the time to finish Kanto and i can have my friends take the train to arrive in my game and we fuck about catching pokemon and battling.
>>
Going to 3d was Pokemons greatest mistake. Gamefreak are not a good 3d dev and never were.

like often you hear "i feel sorry for zoomers" and its some smug asshole just trying to shit on people but in this case i genuinely do. These games still hold up for the most part but when they were the contemporary release at the time when there was nothing like it then it hit different.
These kind of tracks not being part of your childhood as a pokemon fan seems kind of sad to me.
>>
>>736726142
>Why is Pokemon Gold/Silver so beloved all these decades later?
Studies have shown that pastel colors evoke a sense of ease and relief in the brain. Combine GSC's color palette with nostalgia and it's an incredibly relieving experience.
>as the example of where the series peaked?
Whoa, let's not go that far.
>>
>>736726142
Red/Green/Blue/Yellow are set in eastern Japan aka the part of the country you see all the grifter-influencers complaining about as being
>Work-life balance is non-existent, this boring soul crushing office job is killing my spirit etc etc.

Gold/Silver/Crystal is based on Western Japan, the part everyone thinks of as beautiful and traditional.
>>
>>736726142
Personally i'm hoping we one day get a Legends game set in Johto's past during the events of the tower burning. Hisui really made me love the idea of a pokemon game set in the past and you focus on that "modernity versus tradition" conflict and i think theres good fodder there for some story hooks.
>>
>>736726590
>severely underrated these days
they put them on the switch, and it's impossible to do any battles with your own pokemon, just the rentals with garbage moves

this

the answer has been presented every time the people who pay for 4chan passes try to troll 4chan from discord. Nintendo got too complacent and gamefreak got to do one new title as an actual sequel in black and white and it wasn't kanto enough for everyone.

>>736728781
>im gonna psyop people into hating a game or liking mine!
Nigga i like the games i like because i like them not faggots on 4chan.

>plot ends with an anticlimactic battle against a literal who admin who doesn't even have a name
>dogshit pokemon and type distribution; at least a third of the new mons are inaccessible until the very end of the game, also enjoy having exactly 1 dark type before kanto
>elite 4 starts at level 40, not only making it the lowest elite 4 start by 6 levels, but meaning that you wont be able to use some of your favorite pokemon (ex Dragonite) until half way through the postgame without sweeping every gym
>worst evolution item distribution; enjoy getting your stones through postgame or rng phone calls because they removed the ability to buy them
>worst rematch system, enjoy waiting for random phone calls
>worst level curve, enjoy fighting level 12 zubats at the 7th gym
>still fighting level 25 shitmons in the grass all the way through the postgame kanto
These games are complete dogshit and that's the common consensus these days. Of course there exist some fringe nutcase balding transexual millennials with nostalgia blinders on who pretend these games aren't garbage, but that's it.
GS are objectively the worst Pokemon games.
Crystal is objectively the laziest rehash scam GF put outgame adding little meaningful content and having gutted most of its unique features in the international versions
HGSS are the most overrated Pokemon games with all of the same flaws of the dogshit Gen 2 games on the slow as fuck Gen 4 engine. There isn't a single good Johto game
>>
>>736726142
Amongst other reasons anons have posted here, I like that once you gone on to the Kanto region, the story becomes less structured and feels like "your journey" moreso than what they just laid out for you plotwise in Johto. That cements it as a great experience, you accomplish something within the normal confines of the game but you also have a whole adventure that feels more personal to (you)

>the anime turning to utter dogshit because of executive meddling, killing the GS Ball payoff that was set up since the end of OS in favor of a Celebi movie; all the while banishing Ash and friends to uninspired filler hell that was neither cool nor funny, plus he kept dropping bros like Charizard to make room for the far less interesting Johto mons
>Crystal being an extremely underwhelming third version outside of Japan (where it was pretty huge since it was the first game to have online functionality), whereas Yellow had the novelty of "it's KINDA like the anime" and being able to get all three starters without trading or relying on Stadium
>an inherent shift of monster design philosophy to focus on moeshit and simpler designs for the sake of the anime's animators and toy companies making merchandise, leaving a significantly reduced amount of coolmons with the same level of rugged detail and monstrousness as OG 151 classics
Pokemania ended because everything related to Johto was utter dogshit lmfao

notice how you're bouncing between smogon, covid, and now the gba gens as bogeymen? It's a real tell tale sign that Gen 2 is indefensible slop

>>736726142
The new pokemon were shit and the distribution was garbage but it expanded the world in an engaging way, lance fucking up the rockets was cool, red gyarados was cool, following the footsteps of your former character in kanto was cool, and battling red in a remote mountain is the coolest moment in pokemon to this day. It's remembered so fondly because it gave emotional experiences that haven't been matched in subsequent games even if the technical side of things was lacking.

I cannot express just how fucking sick I am of people shitting on Misdreavus for only being available at Mt Silver. All they give a shit about is whether or not a Pokemon can help them finish the game, they have no consideration for the joy of exploration and discovery. They just want to play the game to beat it.
I admit, it was kind of stupid for Morty to have two Haunter instead of showcasing the single new ghost type Pokemon, but considering that they didn't change that in HGSS, they must have had a reason. I know for a fact that doing so would have robbed me of discovering it all on my own as a kid, right before I went to bed for the night.

To be fair the Unova designs are awful. The game itself is great but all the pokemon are just uncanny Chinese knockoffs of Kanto mons and I feel it really holds the game back

>>
>>736731335
>they must have had a reason.
Wasn't it that they were still trying to justify why the new pokemon weren't in gen 1 by making them all super rare? I think gen 2 was hurt a lot by this especially since they abandoned that reasoning immediately after.
>robbed me of discovering
I get you but also I think an early teaser of a late game pokemon wouldn't have been too detrimental, especially if the pokedex had given more hints to the location of pokemon and encouraged you to check those habitats for the one you're seeking

Well technically Za is a sequel to X/Y its just localised to the main city.

But i'll be damned if i wouldn't love a sequel to Ruby and Sapphire. Imagine if the summoning of Groudon and Kyogre lead to a bunch of new islands that over the last 20 years have been taken over by nature or people.

Except they already do that with tons of Pokemon in most of the games. You fight a trainer with a cool looking Pokemon, look it up in the Pokedex and see the area it can be caught, if it can be caught in the wild.
Part of what made earlier generations so special was that there were a bunch of Pokemon that didn't appear on any trainer's teams. Sometimes you'd find an NPC that gives you a hint about them, like that guy in Fuchsia City in gen 2 that talks about Slugma, or you'd have a friend that shows you one, but most of the time you had no help.
They were a reward for exploration.
