Unless you really, really miss the more hand-crafted separated areas of the 3DS version this one is pretty much an upgrade in every way, and even then you can still build areas like cafes and ferris wheels which are pretty similar to those old areas in the 3DS version.

The only thing I think is really lacking from what I've seen is that the dreams aren't as kino as they were on 3DS.

I hope this gets a decently sized modding community, not sure how in-depth it could go beyond injecting textures though

that's likely because each episode has a clear pattern of setup, problem, nanette involvement, angela fantasy scenario, nonsense non sequitir and then a conclusion. the process gets in the way of the storytelling.
A similar show is Full House once it got a few seasons in. Every episode needed scenarios to trigger character catchphrases, and eventually the destination outweighs the journey. A sigh of relief is breathed when each required element comes and goes.

I've only had the mouse work in the touchscreen areas, but it just works wherever I click the mouse. The cursor itself only follows when I'm clicking/holding down. Docked mode is on, direct keyboard/mouse access are both off (if I turn the mouse one on it stops working so maybe see if that is on in your input settings?)
