Beautiful area. I like how the different environments are distinct and pretty to look at. The first one is sterile in that Portal sort of way, then NYC with all the fucked-up printed cars and signs. Then the Terra dome and its trees, then the holographic ocean at sunset was pretty, and then being out on the lunar surface playing chicken with basically moon-Tremors is fun. (That's where I'm at now)

There's a ton of both different guns and hacking nodes. You can also build in either direction by equipping mods, for example there's one mod that increases gun attack power but nerfs hacking damage. There are also different hacking modes where you can deal damage or heat buildup by hacking repeatedly after opening enemies.
All in all it's a really meaty gameplay system, I'm looking forward to how this plays out in the harder modes.

What hacking mode does everyone like?
I used the heat mode for most of my first playthrough but honestly the heat generation probably didn't contribute much. Now I'm playing through Lunatic and using the boost node mode, and it seems quite strong. Triple boosted a defense down node and did endgame tier damage with the shotgun on one of the giant babylike dudes.

Heat mode sucks. It's not powerful enough to make enemies or bosses overheat often. All enemies die way before they overheat. For bosses, I end up maxing out Diana's special gauge before they overheat and then I use special and it erases all overheat bullshit.

Actually crazy to me that some reviews criticized Hugh for not having a "character arc", him just being well adjusted and a good standup person throughout the whole thing is what made him memorable for me. The ending was so fucking kino. I was reminded of the big dumb ending of The Evil Within. It felt similar but just executed way, way better.

I also like how the game's writing never has Hugh look at the camera and explain things to you, and often has him hiding information from Diana that's obvious to him and the audience but wouldn't have been obvious to her. Like when he asks if Higgins was ever nice to Diana and Hugh is internally seething at her answer but doesn't tell her why.

I was thinking they'd end up subverting the dynamic between the two by the end but doubling down is what lets Hugh shine so bright by the end of the game. Feels nice.

I'm surprised they committed to Hugh hiding his face for most of the game, even when talking to Diana during cutscenes. Only times you see it is during the tram, on the beach, when Diana gets hurt and then at the end.

Yeah, but a Westoid game would do the opposite and have the characters constantly chatting for the benefit of the audience because they assume you're stupid and need everything spelt out. The thing that really surprised me with the writing is the subtlety and avoiding the easy cheap shots. Like, it would have been so easy to just make Diana a replacement daughter like Astroboy was to Tobio, but the game goes a bit deeper than that. Or how when you reach the Experimental Pragmatics lab Diana doesn't wimper in pain because its already been established that she doesn't feel pain. It would have been really easy to manipulate the player with her crying but they don't go for the easy thing and instead have her go through existential dread. Which is later revealed to be as a result of Eight infusing the dead filliment with Higgins' feelings, but even then the game doesn't outright state that.

Its not even really that complex, but I'm just so used to bad video game writing especially with these daughter/son simulator Sony "cinematic" experiences that its refreshing to have a game be at least a little subtle and respect my intelligence on a basic level.

Higgins totally wanted to kill everyone on Earth and Eight was following his orders but based Hugh lies to Diana and tells her that whatever she thinks is right. I really like how Hugh keeps trying to let Diana down easy and brace her for having to kill Eight. He knows this can only end one way but he's letting Diana have a bit of hope up to the very end.

It took me 17.9 hours to finish with 100% item completion but missing 1 cabin and not aceing Stand or Die because holy shit I wasn't even close to beating it on time when I was getting hit. I also spent a lot of time in the city reading signs and taking in the sights, less so for the later areas.

The game is a perfect length and doesn't overstay its welcome and is finding new things to throw at you and have you throw at enemies right until the end. And its still longer than every Resident Evil game since RE6.

I ended up using a trainer and just enabled 1 hit kills because the hacking mechanic ruins the game for me. It's infuriating trying to aim and do a fucking puzzle at the same time time. The fact enemies respawn was also kinda the final straw.

Resident evil = kill a zombie and it's dead you'll never see the bastard again.

Pragmata = Go back to an area and every bastard you already killed has respawned...nope fuck that, just show me the ending.

Also can't be bothered with the weapon upgrade system, it's just a mechanic to keep you farming and create the illusion that the game is longer than it really is.
