Not sure why. Like they lacked the confidence to make her the main character of a Witcher game when she never technically took the Witcher trial. But she didn't need the witcher mutations to be powerful, so it seems kind of forced. I look forward to seeing what excuse they come up with.
As for the plot, plenty of open-endedness to give her a story about anything you like. As the books left her, she was basically a dimension-hopping Witcher on her way to Camelot with Galahad. Imagine "Ciri and the Quest for the Holy Grail."

I'm a book fan, and while I quite enjoyed the first game I believe the next two are fucking atrocities for the most braindead crowd there can be. The second game pisses all over the books and Geralt's journey as a character, the third game is just console garbage with lvl 30 drowners and press E to WITCHER SENSE.

The books are about the total disillusionment with reality, trying in vain to set things right, never succeeding and welcoming sweet death that finally brings peace. I've read the books, and my personal view is that the short stories are great and the "saga" is comparatively mediocre. Interestingly, I'd also say that in TW3 I largely found the quality of main story a bit feeble, but there were loads of great side quests and contracts and that's where the game excelled - if you'd agree with that assessment then you'll probably find the same applies to the books, in which case I'd recommend you read The Last Wish which is the collection of short stories.

She really should've been retired. It's been many years, but I remember the books enough that the writer clearly wanted her to have a happy ending and the whole point of Geralt pushing through adversity was to ensure that.
For some reason this is never okay anymore though. Instead of a man or father figure sacrificing for a woman he loves it needs to backfire and she needs to become some sort of a messy tortured soul herself.

(Though I don't know what was added in the last cashgrab looking books as I read them in Witcher 2 days when you had to read fan translations for some but they had a proper ending. I would imagine he probably tried retconning things to make them work for the upcoming game)
