Any issues? I switched to it last week and for some reason when my TV sleeps and I turn it on it doesn't see the PC output. I can see the tv in my kde settings but there's nothing being displayed on the TV. No idea if it's a TV, OS or NVidia issue.
To get it back I have to disable and re-enable HDR. Really annoying.

Make sure to use this backport of windows 7 made by some brony on x, or use steam Cli if something happens like Valve updating the steam download api again. The backport works on my machine btw, im not sure why there is no github for it.

I've had issues with Gamescope while on nvidia, Wayland, and gnome. Games won't capture my mouse without gamescope, but launching games with gamescope would lead them to inevitably bork and crash after like 90 minutes. Had to add some arbitrary launch option to fix it. Maybe something is broken on my install, idk. Works now with the right launch option and gives me no troubles. Still was rather annoying to troubleshoot. Took me weeks to find the right solution. Had to add
>LD_PRELOAD=" "
and I still don't grasp why that fixed it. From what I know the whole preload thing just loads files from a different directory, but that command doesn't even specify a directory, so I have no fucking clue why it makes gamescope stop crashing/get slowdowns, but it does for me.

I thought about swapping off gnome, but I cannot stand KDE or Plasma
>>
>>737793402
>Linux bros, what's your excuse for not gaming on CachyOS?
My games already work on Linux Mint, and I'm too lazy to reinstall Linux just for 2 more fps or something. I mostly play old games that need to be capped to keep them under 900 fps anyway.

Via Steam?
Steam injects its overlay via LD_PRELOAD and also Xalia for controllers on some games I think.
Setting LD_PRELOAD to an empty string stops that.
But also, you get what you deserve for using GNOME in 2026. KDE also has problems, only the wlroots compositors are sane.

I was on pure Arch but switched to Cachy. It fixed some of the things that were bugging me on Arch, but I ended up removing most of it so it's basically just Arch again.

Pretty much just using the cachy kernel roo because it actually helps. Everything else is bloat.
>>
>>737795579
Weird. The games I use controllers with I run without any launch args and they're just fine. It's only when I use gamescope that this issue crops up. I wouldn't need to use gamescope in the first place if Wayland could properly capture my fucking mouse, but here we are.

GNOME is just sleek and well organized. It also hides shit I don't want to see constantly. I love it for that. Plasma is just a Windows clone, and there are plenty of things I despise about the Windows desktop.

So help me God if you say it's an Nvidia driver issue, I will endlessly punch you in the balls. I've gone through this with multiple before. Same driver on x11 properly captures the mouse. Swap to Wayland and not a single game captures the mouse. That's 100% a Wayland issue
>>
>>737795867
The huge library of ananicy-cpp rules is helpful. Also not Cachy-specific but sched_ext is necessary.
>>
>>737795870
I don't think this one has anything to do with NVIDIA, smells more like a GNOME issue to me.
>>
>>737795976
sched_ext is fucking garbage, all you need to do is actually set your system services to idle or batch scheduling.

I started on Kubuntu until I borked my install after fucking up my CUDA drivers.
Only thing I miss was a Windows 95-esque theme I had that never got ported to Plasma 6.
It's really been a treat swapping over to Linux and watching things become more and more usable in real time, I even started kitting out some old rigs into Arch servers.
Once I finish building my NAS and depending on how VR is once the Frame drops, I'll probably finally wipe my backup Windows partition.

Literally any.
Something Debian based if you want an easy switch and stability, like Mint.
If you like to tinker something Arch based.
And something Fedora if you want a nice middleground.
People put too much stock into the specific distro like they are separate operating systems, all that really matters is the parent, everything else is just what comes pre-packaged with it.

I see

Welp, I don’t really have any complaints. The only guy in my class who seems like he actually knows what he’s doing uses KDE Plasma on Arch so I figured I’d maybe give that a spin in a virtual machine to see if it’s worth switching to. But otherwise, I don’t see any reason to swap. It just werks
>>
>>737803598
Arch doesn't just werk until you tell it to. Lots of fucking around with it. But it's light.
>>
>>737803658
Ubuntu “just werks” is what I meant. When I was first installing Linux (with the help of my best friend Dr. ChatGPT) it warned me against Arch for the very reason you are mentioning kek. But we’ll see.

All I’m trying to do now (besides wrap up the course) is figure out how the fuck to install retro games properly via .isos instead of RIPs, which has proven to be annoying enough to keep me busy for a while. Maybe after I manage to get that figured out I’ll worry about doing unnecessarily annoying shit like trying to make an Arch environment that I can work with so I can become an elite /g/ poster.
>>
>>737803850
I know, I'm saying if you want something that just works, Arch isn't it. Even Cachy and Endeavour, which are super easy Arch installs, don't just work.
KDE Plasma is really nice though. If you do want to switch without too much fuckery you could always go Fedora.
>>
>>737804009
Fedora is what was recommended we install (textbook does everything in Fedora IIRC). I’d already installed Ubuntu by the time I discovered that since it’s what I saw was installed on that lab’s desktop, so I decided I’d give Fedora a spin in a VM instead to see if it looked like it’d be worth swapping to on my laptop.

Doesn’t seem like it’s worth the trouble. Not unless there’s a connection between the issues I’m having with game installs and Ubuntu, which I highly doubt.
>>
>>737803850
>how the fuck to install retro games properly via .isos instead of RIPs
NTA but if you're talking about PC vidya you should install cdemu (you can mount isos manually too but bin/cue stuff needs it to load properly) and run the installer with your launcher of choice (if you don't use any you can add it as a non-steam game), then just change the file path to the game exe after the installation
>>
>>737803598
use what works for you but do not be surprised when it shits the bed eventually
>>
>>737804227
I tried Lutris first which got me nowhere and now I’m trying Bottles (which seems promising but also like it’s pretty easy to fuck something up).

I *think* I already installed CDEMU back in my Lutris days because I needed it for the exact reason you’re describing, but the games wouldn’t run even after the installation was complete. The RIP files seem to work without issue, so I may just be stubborn trying to do things through the .iso route. But it’d be better to figure out how to install via the image file in any case since not all of the older games have RIPs available.
>>
>>737804350
I don’t think I have enough of a frame of reference yet to even know what shitting the bed looks like on a distro, kek. But I’ll keep that in mind.

My main device is running Windows so it’s not like I’ll lose anything that’d make me an hero if my Linux machine suddenly dies. Whole point of this was to get acclimated to the Linux environment. Not to mention it being a requirement for my course.
>>
>>737804409
Maybe the RIP came pre-patched or the cd image is corrupted, it happens sometimes, if they didn't remove anything it's not a big deal to just use that one, I remember playing GTA 3 without music because the fuckers ripped everything out lmao

Predominant reason is because ubuntu is usually at the center of linux shooting itself in the foot and doing retarded shit. Like when they pushed rust on everything when everyone was fleeing from windows, scaring them off of linux. Or when they added in snappacks, which are unique in that you don't know whats in them, the free and open source community, or when ubuntu put ads in the terminal app. Ubuntu seems to always be at the center of something going horribly wrong.
>>
Because I got use to Fedora for work, and there is no point in learning a new distro if the current one can do it all with some effort.
The people always asking for advice what distro they should use should be told this at every turn.
It doesn't matter which one you pick.
You can put steam on all of them, you can play games on all of them, the only difference is how many steps you need to take before it's functional.
At best you're saving yourself a little bit of work, may as well pick one and stick with it, you'll get further by being decisive than by spending 3 months picking the perfect distro.
>>

You'll be fine. Nvidia dropped support for 10 series cards and older, but 1660 should still work without issues.
>>737808459
>>737809347
Old cards can still work fine, you just have to manually switch over to the 580xx drivers. Arch-based distros can get them from the AUR. I'm sure other distros can do the same or just keep the packages in their default repositories.

What's annoying with Arch Is how the AUR is used as a replacement for having a good amount of packages in the official repos.

But often when you try to install something via AUR it doesn't even work (ran into that issue earlier with openshot).

And then there is the risk of getting some malware.

all filepickers are shite
they ignore indexers so while folders open fine in dolphin it doesn't work in the browser
if I try to open my 4chan folder with 50k+ images it freezes my computer
it always defaults to details view instead of thumbnail view so I have to swap it every time
fuzzy search is order specific so if you put tags in the wrong order nothing comes up
pressing space while searching selects the file you're on instead of adding a space to your search query

this is easily my biggest pet peeve in linux and there are tickets open for it on gnome and kde that are a decade old
even went to bitch on the kde chatroom and they just told me to have dolphin open 24/7 while using firefox like what the fuck

The highest struggle i am having with Linux is old VNs just are a pain to get running. Because the nip fucks used obscure proprietary Microsoft bullshit apis and syscalls. Have got most of them working.
By installing the fonts and dx DLLs and C++ redists.
But for some reason, a few select VNs used WMV as a video codec for reasons only the nip bugman mind knows. So it crashes when it can't load the codec and most of them you cannot skip the intro vids.

Problem with that is some of the more game focused ones like Baldrs Sky require 3D acceleration. Something that VMs just do not work with correctly.
And i am not buying a second GPU just pass through.
>>737829035
Mixed results. Some of them do work with it. But others just crash still because of the codec issue. It is mostly about how the VNs was originally coded. Most of the popular engines now work quite well. But it is stuff from early 2000s and late 90s that is giving the most troubble.

Arch doesn't have the tranny shit and tracking features added to it.
>>
>>737845562
What tracking features? And it's extremely well known that all tranny linux users are on Arch.

Good (or bad) news. They're doing spring cleaning of the code and merging many elements of the KIO filepicker and Dolphin.

such as?

I will take a wild guess.
1. Their forum says it's LGBTQ+ friendly and
2. Someone told them they are implementing age verification and he believed it, even though they literally said the opposite.
Place your bets.

only on linux i have what i think is weird VRM whine from my motherboard whenever doing things like openming windows, scrolling etc, something to do with how linux distros handle cpu power and p states by default so i have to manually disable p states and set cpu governer to something other than balanced. it doesnt happen with windows and drove me nuts since my pc case is on my desk but after a quick fix its quiet as can be, just weird when it happened with fedora and eventually arch, ir drove me nuts

the thing about cachy and arch is that almost everything is left to the user
there's very little to fuck up unlike popos with its ubuntu and canonical relationship
>>
I keep seeing people mention the kernel, what's so special in the Cachy kernel?
>>
>>737847193
honestly if i didn't play video games and mess with local AI i'd probably be pretty content with a mini PC running some atomic Fedora distro.
>>
>>737847597
compiled for newer instruction sets
the general kernel still maintains compatibility with ancient shit like core 2 duos

Why not use the cachy kernel?
>>
>>737793402
Because I'm already on Arch. That said, I recommend Fedora Plasma or CachyOS to friends who've asked about Linux
