Yeah. I switched mainly to Linux around 2012 but kept dual-booting for games for a few more years. Around 2019 I finally felt like it had become good enough thanks to Proton and DXVK, and AMD drivers finally getting good enough, that I'd rather give up the last few games I couldn't play on it than bother with Windows.
>>
Yes. If I cant play it on linux I just dont bother.
>for me its (((FEDora))) atomic

>>740127329

>>
>>740126382
Yes. And then I switched to macOS because Linux became too easy to play games. Although macOS is become too easy as well ever since the release of GPTK and other tools.
>>
>>740126382
Pretty much, yeah. I have a Windows partition sitting on my other SSD but I haven't booted into it except to confirm the linux install didn't mess with it 3 months ago.
Playing games every day on Cachy has been pretty cool. Nothing I've tried is broken. Quite a few games got a slight performance bump. Only negative I found was TW:WH3 took a bit of fiddling because KDE doesn't like scaling 2 monitors differently when something is running full screen.

Yup. Like I said I had issues with qemu and if it craps on me and I cannot access word or some other bullshit that's Win specific I would lose my mind. Like HL Alyx wouldn't work well for me on Linux with Steam Link but flawless on Windows
And with denuvo I should probably remove the internet access of those VMs but J haven't figured out yet an easy way of opening the qcow and just putting my installers on there.

For 6 years now. I was exclusivly Linux for a 4 years while I was in uni too but I swapped back because a game I got into didn't work too well in wine at the time, though my second monitor was controlled by a Linux PC then so I was a weird windows+Linux hybrid. I thank /v/ every day for the anons who helped convince me to swap to linux. I daily drive fedora, i still dual boot because once every 30 days or so i need to do something in windows, but literally all of my games work with proton (especially the GE variant), and I dont have to deal with the horrible bloat and sluggishness of windows. I can even pirate games, add them to steam , and then run them through that with proton to get controller support. Holy shit linux is fucking awesome.

works fine with proton (ge). i have 1.3k hours in the game on linux, literally 0 issues.
I have also sucessfully played resident evil games. You do not need native linux ports to play games on linux, that is why proton exists, that is why proton GE (glorious eggroll) exists.

I have hundreds and hundreds of games on my steam account and 95%+ of them work just as well or better with proton than on windows.

As long as you have ample space you can do all sorts of shit conveniently if you boot into the liveusb of the new distro (or any distro). Make a new partition, copy your /home/ shit to it, now you can fuck with your old distro's fstab or install the new one or whatever. I don't see the point of doing any of that though, I just have the one partition

>>
>>740151796
I 100% recommend Mint UNLESS you have 2 monitors with different refresh rates. Then just go for CachyOS.
Artix is for more advanced (and contrarian) users. A lot of troubleshooting solutions you find online won't work on Artix (because it doesn't use systemd)
>>
>>740151796
Mint is good if you just want a puter that werks, but you will have some problems with gaming.
Older kernel means older drivers, and in general the packages it uses are old but stable which is sort of the point I suppose.
Like ultimately just fucking try shit. Stay the fuck away from Artix or any of the other systemd-less distros until you have a grasp on how linux actually works. Not that they don't work, quite the contrary but like the other anon mentioned troubleshooting them is way more involved and there's way less resources out there.

They know that their reputation of being the standard is going to evaporate after boomers and genx stop being responsible for dumping government money into longterm contracts and being too incompetent to open files with anything other than msoffice slopware.
They have not been competent in over 20 years, they must at least maintain the reputation of being a lowest common denominator OS so that companies keep buying licenses for their menial workers.

Just a handful of programs, not that much different from Linux, but unlike Linux I get a core OS that can actually run software I care about. As in, the entire reason that makes an OS worth a shit. Not some derangement syndrome that makes you treat operating systems as personalities.

It won't lol, gamers want SteamOS. Gamers are cattle, they're attached to branding. That's why they despise Windows so much, it's not the OS itself as much as the branding, they hate Microsoft and made hating them their entire personality. They either get SteamOS, which to them is "Windows but good because Valve", or they won't switch to Linux, no matter how many idiotproof FOTM gaming distros crop up.
>>
>>740155084
It's just Linux optimized for a handheld.
>much more game compatibility
Steam has the same Proton builds on every Linux system, and it all runs in a Steam Linux Runtime container so system packages outside of video drivers are practically a non-issue. Nobody needs SteamOS on a desktop and it's unlikely that Valve will ever officially support it on anything but their own hardware.

only if it has an anti cheat that needs full control of your computer and i don't engage with games like that in the first place not even when i was on windows.

>>740155298
valve really doesn't have to do much to turn it into a general purpose distro
all that really needs to be done is aur support and they could just make that a toggle that discloses the risks from using community packages and a big red sign that says NVIDIA FUCKING HATE YOU AND WE WON'T SUPPORT IT UNTIL THEY JOIN MESA
the main purpose of steamos is valve support

DXVK is a native Windows binary and it often works on Windows giving the same benefits of lower CPU overhead and better frame pacing. I got 10fps extra in Crysis 1 on Windows 10 that's a DX10 game by DXVK putting less strain on the single thread the game's limited to. It's black magic as even on Microsoft's turf translating DX calls to Vulkan increases performance.

Cachy has been pretty impressive about two months in, not having messed with Linux proper for a few years aside the Deck. Not the functionality itself, which is great as I haven't found a game that didn't work, my last GPU choice paid off and then some, and undoing a full retard moment took me a whole 30 seconds by selecting an automatic snapshot during boot, but in bringing back that childlike wonder with the desktop having a significant evolution in your workflow (that's mostly on KDE, but still). That's something Windows hasn't managed to achieve since the XP to Vista/7 jump, rather you dread the changes and look forward to undo them.

Look, there is nothing wrong with customizing windows to declutter, debloat, or anything else really. In fact im glad that you are, really, you SHOULDNT have those things installed. But I think there is a difference between customizing your computer to add things that you want vs customizing it to remove things that should never have been included in the first place.

Its much easier to realize what you need than it is to realize things that you shouldnt have installed. The opt in vs opt out kind of mindset. Linux does not come bloated with AI and malware like windows does. Atleast, I dont know of any distros that do.

Then the K2 project got announced. And everyone went out of their way to deny that it'll ever change anything as (You) are so mindbroken you NEED to see Windows only get worse, and any hint that this trend won't continue sends you into a frenzy.

It's like the two cakes meme. Linuxfags are butthurt that someone else has a cake and want it covered in shit. Normal people are happy that there are two cakes to choose from.

>>740173318
Yeah I get ya, but in case of debloating modern Windows, there's not much to do really. It's all automated with transparent PowerShell scripts. Disable unnecessary background services, uninstall unnecessary software, tweak group policy settings, one and done affair, and after that you can add whatever software you prefer. Ideally you just fresh install IoT LTSC that's as barebones as it can be OOTB and go from there. And let's be fair, any Linux distro will have similar involvement if having to source an ISO, know what to do with it and then set things up yourself. The average Joe is just as fucked either way. The average Joe doesn't even know you can boot from a USB stick to reinstall Windows.

People overdramatize how bad modern Windows is without ever using it or knowing that you're not powerless under Windows, because people care more about turning everything online into a flame war nowadays than they actually care about the things they keep antagonizing.

I have been using both 10 and 11 for a good while now, switched from 10 LTSC to 11 LTSC recently and... it's barely any worse. People just love to whine. How good your personal experience with an OS is is as good as your skill in handling it, it's not a binary choice of Windows = bad, Linux = good. If you don't understand Linux, you'll have a bad time with Linux. Same with Windows. It's a skill issue through and through, modern computing is just this fucking hostile.

The average windows user has no idea this exists or that they can or should do this because the purpose of Windows is to obfuscate the malicious and insidious data harvesting that microsoft is doing. So for you, using windows is probably fine, but you are still using an operating system that was designed from the ground up for extremely corrupt reasons and you will have to continue to fight with it and always be on guard for any update that might introduce new and even more insidious ways to fuck you over. I do not have to worry about that on linux because my distro respects me, my privacy, and my intelligence.

More competition is good, I hope it does actually improve things on windows. But I'll believe it when I see it, they would have a ton of work ahead of them to get it to a decent state. My linux pc does everything I want, and it isn't microsoft, so I'm keeping the setup that works for me

>obfuscate the malicious and insidious data harvesting
It's been proven time and time again that the shit that's harvested is not as insidious as people make it out to be. It's basically half-assed automated QA where none of the data collected can be used to track you down. Obviously that did nothing since Nadella firing QA only made Windows worse since you can't figure out what the user's problems actually are from some basic data on how they move and click their mouse.

There are enough forensic tools to prove this "evil spyware" rhetoric as closed source software doesn't mean it's impossible to see what it's doing, otherwise the whole anti-virus concept wouldn't work to begin with. Plus, if it was truly as evil as everyone says it is, every major cybersecurity expert, without exception, would not only tell people not to use Windows, they would show all the proof of how bad Windows is for your privacy to the point where Microsoft would have a PR disaster on their hands.

And again, yes, I am aware such tools exist. The average person using Windows, again, doesn't even know that you can boot from a USB drive to reinstall Windows. And you're expecting them to switch to Linux to set them free. That is the single biggest fundamental flaw of Linux evangelists. They all overestimate the technical literacy of the "average Windows user" they're targeting.

They're too incompetent to set up a bootable USB drive, let alone enter BIOS to boot from it. None if this discussion holds any merit when this is the level of dumbfuck we're talking about.

>>
>>740174375
If you were the one to bring up "malicious and insidious data harvesting", it's on you to bring the evidence of what's being harvested and sent where. All of that can be verified, every file operation and packet movement under Windows can be monitored, so it's more than doable to dig out all the data that's been collected.

Now if you say that that's not true because Windows hides all of it from the user so that they can never ever find it, then you're admitting you're talking out of your ass and you don't understand how computers work, period. Not only are you ignorant of how Windows NT works, you're ignorant of how computers work. The perfect example of a Dunning-Kruger.
>>
>>740174408
>bu holy shit whats wrong with linux usb periphericals compatability?
Drivers are made by the companies who make the hardware on windows, and those companies usually dont care enogh to make linux drivers, so its up to the linux community to create those drivers usually from scratch, so we often dont have everything up to par because of this.
>>
>>740174664
>All of that can be verified, every file operation and packet movement under Windows can be monitored,
Why even bother lying about this when its verifiably untrue, windows is closed source for a reason, they would consider it the highest level of security risk if people actually saw all of the source code for everything.
>>
>>740174734
Also the design of Linux as a kernel makes it difficult. Since it's a monolithic kernel, you're expected to contribute your drivers to the kernel. That's a lot of hassle even for some random peripheral gimmick. With Windows NT, the hybrid kernel is designed so that device drivers are "tacked on". A company pays Microsoft for a signing certificate, and they can release all the drivers they need, and they'll likely work in perpetuity as Microsoft hasn't touched how the driver stack works ever since it got rewritten during the Longhorn project.

Basically it's much easier to create drivers for useless junk on Windows than it is on Linux.

Ah, thanks for confirming without a doubt you reside on Peak of Mt. Stupid. Yeah, but that guy is a stereotypical pajeet. He filled calibre with pointless AI bullshit for no reason. I don't trust his judgement

The only thing I can complain about Mint is the fact that it's based on Debian and got older packages. Fedora-based Mint with KDE is my dream noob distro recommendation (which is basically Universal Blue/Bazzite).

I installed Linux on my laptop because I had to use flex and bison, so I'll try them out for gaming and see if I'll switch on my desktop too.

Its getting so bad it feels like its intentionally trying to get me to delete it. It cant even tell the fucking time properly, icons disappearing from my taskbar every day, weird crashes after a recent update, triggering bit locker for no reason. If I didn't do game dev shit for fun and needed UE id have nuked it years ago.

Holding onto dear life with my dated W10 PC. Either they fix W11 enough by the time I have to switch (they won't) or I'll finally have to look for a semi-functional linux alternative.

Yeah. The only fucked thing for me are saved games on pirated games because ProtonOS creates really weird folder names which you have no idea what they're for.
Otherwise it's been pretty smooth. I run CachyOS on my ROG Ally and used it docked like a desktop, too.

Win11 was a bridge too far.
Went to Cachy around start of this year.
NEVER going back to Windows.
