I recommend trying out Jigoku Kisetsukan Sense of the Seasons on steamIt's not too long, beautiful visuals and simple but memorable enough characters that you will probably walk away with a favorite. Each plays differently from the next.Back in high school, I made a lifelong friend bonding over playing this game together and voicing the characters as we went through. One of the characters, Niiboru, is an alien girl that had her ship stolen by one of the mini bosses on her level, and she's voiceless in other people's campaigns- but has inner monologue in her own. And a friend of mine did Macho Man Randy Savage for her voice and it was pretty great. Game controls well and it was also one of my first toe dippings into anime as a sector of media since I only really grew up with pokemon besides that. Now I know what a paizuri is, neato.

Tbh I've never understood Imperishable Night as a starter game. That one always felt weirdly tough for me come later stages. Even within Touhou I genuinely think a beginner player would have a more satisfying learning curve playing PCB or Ten Desires. Both those games also have extra stage bosses that are pretty reasonable for the average player to get a clear on whilst Mokou I kinda doubt it.

Mushihimesama is the only one I've ever been able to really get into. I like Psikyo aesthetics but they're not as fun and Ikaruga is also really cool but I'm really bad at it. I also tried T-Type Final 3 Evolved but having to customize your ship really turned me off, I just want to shoot stuff.
