since this is the sneaky drawing thread, can i ask a question of some of you experienced drawererers? i have spent years doodling willy-nilly gesture lines and overlapping forms that i think are nice but i cannot for the life of me "draw from reference." this might be a strange question but do any of you, for instance, look at a line/contour and try to mentally place its beginning and end point on the canvas, or do you draw it blind? i feel like i'm near a breakthrough when it comes to observation but that could easily be my naivete
>>
>>740914486
i use to but now i just wing it
>>
>>740914486
To draw from reference you use construction, same as a normal drawing. Make simple shapes that are roughly right, then make more definitive lines over them. As for learning where to place the first lines, you'll just have to work your brain's visual side.

Just trying to copy the lines is for masters or freaks.
>>
>>740914414
Reaching across your entire tablet isn't very efficient unless you have some little baby huion.
>>
>>740914486
Try tracing exercises
>hurrrrrr tracing bad
Same cucks that think using a reference is """cheating"""

>>740914486
> look at a line/contour and try to mentally place its beginning
you already failed, learn values instead

>>740914294
Even the most grug early version of CSP, or as it was called, Manga Studio, is better than SAI. SAI is godawful
>>
SAI is amazing.
>>
>>740914486
Its all about shapes and proportions. And letting how much your style breeds. But the shapes you need to look for is t he value shapes, its easier to read the face with value contours rather than fixed shapes like loomis. Eventually if you do enough then you'll just do it mindlessly and still manage to finish it good. Then you start drawing entrily new poses from ref because just 1:1 ref is boring.

at some point you don't need to think about it and your brain just does it
before that try using plumb lines.
for example i marked a few on this random picture
>top of bangs is parallel to the elbow
>wrist is lined up with the iris
>chin and waist line up
>eye and knee are parallel
>bow and the widest point of the leg are the same height
and so on
you want to find points to use as visual landmarks and work off that
>>
>>740916014
I like sai, but I do wish there was a lasso fill tool.

You can work around this with a fill keybind, but still.
>>
how and what should I study? I feel unable to learn how to construct bodies from simple boxes. but others are telling me to copy exactly what I see (contours). it's all so confusing

When i was still in school they told us to draw whatever dynamic pose reference in pinterest before we get into the study itself as a warm up everyday. Then we move to foundational drawing where we learn about body parts composition in detail like head, torso, hands, legs, foot. By the end of the semester we could draw any pose that we want and identify posture underneath clothes. I never draw boxes outside of perspective class, even then it was only for introductionary practice like to see how 1p, 2p, and 3p perspective works

No. I'll tell you why:
> The video game industry is completely captured to the point where socialist/progressive/left-wing /pol/ bullshit and that includes every national-socialist type that cosplays as a conservative.
> Because of the capture, the cooperative between access video game journalists, influencers, youtubers and the like, along with Hollywood/movie industry types, and finally government funding project programs, and some parts of academia, have come to form a panopticon system that produces bad software products (video games)
> And because of the cooperative capture, bad games are being produced and I'm being told - even on this website that is now no different from every normal faggot social networking website - is often suspected of being a place for marketing researchers and marketing influencers posing as faggot OPs (and they may as well be).
As a result, and this is me speaking as a 40 year old faggot that's been on this website since the beginning almost (2003? 2004?) I'm left with more desire to play old games, whether on original hardware, emulated software or hardware (MiSTER), and some modified old games at that. The new stuff out there, perhaps a RPG Maker free video game or free Doom WAD or total conversion, gets my attention. But I have no reason or desire to readily pay money to an industry that takes me for granted and treats me like a stupid idiot. Now I can't speak for others. But I can certain say: I think it's time to focus on personal savings and become more picky and miserable with what one buys as far as video game entertainment. I could always move on to another hobby - I know a few old fags that have left this place and moved on about nearly a decade and a half ago that have moved on from video games altogether once the demoralization just hit (thanks commies, you ruin everything!)

I've used these in the past years ago for high school projects or for doodles - I don't draw anymore. And I was using some old American illustration techniques to use these mannequins and they worked! So for anime, the problem has always been the head: Japanese use the sphere and not the bulb head shape although the bulb helps to then measure the height of forehead and hairline of character designed. You're just going to have to eyeball it I say. Practice, practice, practice.

If mannequins don't work here's what I would do
> find a subject like a woman or a man - whoever can trust you to take a picture for your purpose to practice illustrating from different angles their head and face
> PRINT - on photo paper (matte or gloss) the photos with a photo printer or at a place that can develop photos (I know, old school but trust me it's worth having a high quality photographs printed) and then have them on hand to then use practice of illustrating the same person from different perspectives.
Now you could print on regular inkjet but you won't have the same vibrancy and color accuracy as that of a photographic print in case you want to color later after illustrating.

This.
I can not understand how all the fancy, modern programs ALL left me super disappointed with their brushes' ability to blend.
And then there's the part where all these newer programs sample transparency and/or color from other layers outside of both your selection borders AND your working layer. It's insane. Why in the hell would I want to pull in and blend transparency or other unrelated colors when I specifically separate shit with selection, or layers? Wonky blending at that.

So I have to stay with ol' simple SAI. Except for text and animations, where I use CSP.

back even before it fixed like the 5000 issues I had with it, I still loved it for coloring and rendering while I used CSP for sketching.
now I just use krita fully, I enjoy it despite the obvious retarded quirks it has.

Words of advice to all the babies starting out: Ignore /ic/'s tablet thread and /ic/ in general probably and have fun

I couldn't get it to work right a year ago but I've forgotten what the problem was since then, something with how the cursor is drawn I think. Looking back to what I posted about it, I just wrote "It's not unusable but glitchy."

A little too bloated for me. Unless I absolutely need it I prefer MyPaint. Well, .ora files are compatible with Krita anyway so that helps too.

i cannot unlearn the keybinds and layout of paint.net.

I am 100 layers deep, and i have a vague clue what's what.
If I need to rescale or rotate anything, I redraw/trace using the 4 point vector line, that turns into pixels.

I post the entire image, use contrast to make it absolutely white, apply a texture use magic tool to lassor the white version of the image, revert the image, go back to the texture layer, ctrl X it, and make another layer to have a cut out of the texture I want to add on top.

I think, I have an issue.

Get CS6 version from 10 years ago or something. Those viruses will also be so old your pc should already be immune to them.

COVID did a number on it and the low speed + AI flood really did just pummel it into the ground, but every now and then it's just so good.
Like this little mp4 I yoink'd off of there a few days ago, really helped me a lot.

I guess you could apply that mentality to every board though, swimming in a sewer for a diamond and all that.
>>740934936
ye it's fantastic but I fuck up remembering to toggle the ""REAL"" eraser whenever I'm dealing with like stylized pattern brushes or transparency ones and try to scrape stuff off like a retard.

I avoid the catalogue like the plague and just stick to my designated generals, otherwise you'll see the 20 AI argument and demoralization threads up at any given time. That's the best way to engage with the board, find the generals you like the most and only frequent those. The board is a lot slower and cozier once you do that.
For me, it's /salt/ and the animation general

This is not even close to enough construction to begin drawing features, if you need construction that is. This is the problem with learning from anime people, you learn bad practices. This guy has drawn the same doll face a thousand times and can draw it blindfolded, a beginner needs thorough construction because it actually very effectively helps you learn to draw the same thing without construction aids. But if you only draw a few vague lines like that your drawing brain doesn't learn anything, and of course you end up with lopsided faces.

you're just asking for this gif to be posted aren't you
hint hint: you cannot talk about drawing anime on 4chan (or most of the internet really) because you will either be talking to an anime study looney whose only drawing practice comes from tracing anime and manga for 10 years for deviantart tier scribbles or whatever the fuck this lunacy was
>>
>>740936220
bro that's plenty... People who think they must have a thousand construction lines before they can begin to attempt an anime head are people who don't want to accept you need to make bad drawings before you get good.
You get a feel for what looks good and what doesn't,

>>
>>740936459
Your drawing brain learns by drawing things over correct construction. This is true for anything, figures, composition, perspective. You draw correctly and you learn to notice flaws and mistakes, that's how you get better and gain the ability to draw without construction with confidence. That's how it works. I think it's just easier for the brain to recognize correct patterns this way.
>>
>>740918926
Go look at an illustration that you like. Now draw it. Repeat this with other illustrations that you like many times. This is how Japanese mangaka and illustrators learn to draw.

>Light bulb(ous heads)
Generally, a normal head has the horizontal center of the face at eye level, for many anime styles the center is at eyebrow level.
>>
>>740938210
I'm proud of almost every image I draw, even the shitpost doodles.
But I also know that I'm a lazy, stagnant and fundamentals-less amateur, and hate myself for that.
It's a complicated feel.
