>>741332209>the witness is the most beautiful game I ever played, his forte is graphics programming and aestheticsHe did not make the art. He did the programming.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck two more days until demo 2
>>741332308Not shocking at all if you know the slightest bit about game development and optimization. Who gave you that opinion? Say the names.
Its funny how all these useless youtubers make shit games like that Irish guy who released some crappy mobile puzzle game a few months ago and spent like a decade working on it.
>>741332027He left developer debug stuff on for the demohis game also uses a lot of volumetrics, which is perf heavy. But really, he procrastinated on optimization for far too long and then suddenly got hit with a requirement to ship a demo, so he had to scramble to get things presentable, which meant pretty much everything else but optimization was more important.
>>741332312Are you gonna keep arguing with a strawman or are you gonna piss off? Either way you already confirmed you're an idiot so there's no turning back.
>>741331579Can I ask, what is it about the witness that you connected with so deeply? I like puzzle games, and I tried to play it several times, getting as far as solving two of those big beam mega puzzles but I dont think I "get" it. All Witness fags i talked to so far just go on about how amazing and beautiful this game is but they cannot ever elaborate. I am beginning to think its a running joke of sorts to claim its the most beautiful game you ever played just to fuck with people who are not in the know
>>741332383>strawmanWhat? That's what you fucking said.
>>741332164anon, I think that's fucking blow himself
Whhoooooooo~oopThis shit stupid as hell mane
>>741332445Start saying who was actually responsible for the graphics programming and you'll be slightly less of an idiot, no cope or dodge will make you sound less retarded so don't bother, just take the L you clueless idiot.
>>741332546Do you think that "graphics programming" means he's responsible for the art direction?
>>741332474Heh, blow himself.
>>741332424there's an aspect of the game I presume you're unaware of in which you have to really drink in the scenery at all times, I presume that tends to give people who got into the game a greater appreciation for the visuals of everything. For me I don't think it's anything insane graphically but the almost painting-like stylized take on realism is very visually appealing to me, I consider it one of my favorites but that's largely because the puzzles are really good
>>741332424As far as graphics goes I'd say it's the very strong sense of being there due to the lack of screen-space fuzziness, he makes a big deal about visual consistency and you can tell. The gameplay leans a lot towards spatial awareness too, you're rewarded for taking your time and paying attention to details until you reach an eureka moment. It's a game clearly designed to be lived in rather than just being "played through" which I respect a lot.
>>741332351After 11 years developing and being THE performance and software sucks these days and is slow guy, there's no excuse
So... Who is this game for?
>>741332624Do you think the artists just plopped down assets and the game came to be? Enough with the dunning kruger you dumb clown, we already have enough littering in this board.
>same group of 5 autists post in every thread, eternally buttblasted at another autist who is more successful than them.
>>741332649I do appreciate the scenery, and it is very appealing, yes. But i think the puzzles dont have enough breakups, i remember solving puzzles with the exact same mechanic like 15 times back to back before it got a new mechanic or challenge but it was very predictable and not exciting like "now there are dots you need to include in the path of your line" then it did the opposite where you had to avoid certain dots. And then combines the two. I genuinely cannot comprehend it. I probably have like 8-10h in it and i just dont get it...
>>741332649>>741332708Hi Jonathan, congratulations on releasing the demo.
>>741332797me
I think Jon Blow is super smart. Cuz he makes good puzzles (Braid) and filters the fuck out of pretty much everyone (the witness). He also has pretty good takes from what I've seen. This sends /v/ into a frothing rage of insecurity. Someone here really really doesn't like the idea of someone smarter than them, Blow threads are always viciously negative.Anyway Where the fuck are the gameplay webms
>>741332815Ok, tell me exactly what you think "graphics programming" means.
>>741332708That is fair and i get that, i just didnt find the actual puzzles very good
>>741332797pseudo-intellectuals and fanboys who have been sucking up to Blow for years
>>741332851It's not a game that leans well towards expectations, just forget about it and any discussion about it and play it later when you've abandoned any pretense.
>>741332831>autists are autistically annoyed at a fellow autist letting them downit's like poetry
>>741332890Hey, Blow. I don’t have a xitter account so I will ask you here. Why does your game run like ass and did you generate the art with AI?
>>741332931Man I just hope there'll be people like you being this into my game one day
>>741332890Where do you people keep getting this idea that Blow is super smart besides him telling you?
>>741328640Look at the top of his head
>>741330765>The budget figure comes from Blow's comments on a podcast, where he said the team has about 10 full-time staff and roughly 20 people involved when part-time workers and outsourcing are counted. He said the company's annual cost over the past decade has ranged from about $1.8 million to $4.4 million, which puts the total project cost near $27 million using a midpoint estimate.salary I guess
>>741332896I called this out earlier. He literally doesn't know.
>>741332851It's largely just jblow's obsession with heavy intuition-based tutorialization, he likes to really beat you over the head with new mechanics to make sure you have a working understanding of them before he gives you a seriously challenging puzzle involving said mechanic. There's a lot of the same philosophy in OotSS but I'd say it's more subtle. In the witness if you aren't getting something just try going somewhere else and seeing where it gets you, all of the main puzzle areas are open to you from the moment you boot the game and you might find the clarification you're aiming for
>>741333048people who haven't touched compiler dev think it's some esoteric black magic
>>741332851Yes, The Witness is just a collection of maze puzzles. The “mindblowing” environmental puzzles that his fanboys talk about is just a gimmick where you draw lines in the environment. It’s a neat gimmick the first time, but gets tiresome. There’s nothing deeper to it.
>>741333047Jblow is very explicit about his goals and ideas with his games and none of it is an accident, you should listen to his interviews and talks if you wanna learn something about game design and what makes someone truly love a game.
>>741333048Why would he lie about that?
>>741333047lmao so you’re a wannabe game dev. It’s a cargo cult mentality.
If i were king I'd make it a rule than anyone providing strong like/dislike for the game needs to post their puzzle count. Every post here shitting on the game reads like a steam review with 0.3 hours.
>>741333101I tried the OotSs demo but I just cant find it in myself to get excited for 500hours of sokobanAs for Witness as I said I played it 8h at least and i didnt need to look things up. I wasnt struggling with the puzzles, I just didnt find them interesting and while the eorld itself was nice that alone is not enough
>>741328640>no physical switch 2 releaseThere goes that sale.
>>741333260my guess is that you went for less interesting areas since the difficulty varies pretty wildly and a lot of the most interesting stuff comes a bit later, which beacons did you end up lighting up?>>741333118I'm a big fan of the game and those did nothing for me honestly, it was cool to see them but chasing them down just felt tedious
>>741333163I have, hes pretty funny and says a lot of interesting things. I was merely saying the level of passion you display towards his work is something I hope people will feel towards mine because im in it to make human connections. Its far too easy to discount someone elses work and nitpick it
>>741333256It’s ass. I dropped it at one of the mirror cloning puzzles which is a clusterfuck and the rules are stupid. Why does a clone dying or having too many clones make a puzzle unsolvable?
>>741333047I hope you make something worthy of that kind of interest, the world needs more inventive indie devs
>>741333217Far from wannabe tbqhHave you made anything you are proud of? why so negative and trying to bring me down?
>>741330695kek, post jblow crying in the dark after that
>>741333376Find what makes your game really interesting and lean as hard as you can into that, never listen to normaloids saying you're cringe or too much and you're good.
Maybe im a sokoban brainlet but i played the mirror area and thought the puzzles were good outside of maybe the first 3 which were too braindead (the first semihard one for me is where you have to mirror onto a water rock) Then you start duplicating dudes and it got fun. And apparently west area is the hardest and best one? So I dunno, if the game maintains quality similar to this I think its gonna be good.
>>741333423And this is why niggers like you should post your puzzle count. If you're filtered by introductory puzzles, your opinion should be disregarded.
>>741333256If I were king i would make it a rule that anyone downplaying and shitting on someone else's work would need to post alongside their achievements in life
>>741333456Why do you cocksuckers whine so much? Blow is not shy about criticizing other people’s games. Suck it up, pussy.
>>741333513I found west area fairly easily since it never softlocked me and it's also the comfiest because it doesn't play like a typical puzzle game where you're just supposed to sit there and wonder what to do, it's more like an adventure.
>>741333514I was filtered by how nonsensical and poorly explained the rules are, not by the difficulty of the puzzle. I just dropped it as soon as I realized how it works. It’s not a well thought out game.
>>741333256kind of inflated playtime since I left it running at a point but it is what it is. Absolutely great game so far, has a strong possibility to be my favorite sokoban-like on release (currently void stranger but how little respect that game has for you as a player has it kind of primed to get knocked off eventually). I'll be picking it up on launch so long as the price isn't something ridiculous, and I'm pretty interested to see how the second drop of demo content looks since I assume it'll be closer to what the meat of the game is going to feel like
>>741328640blowjob is the embodiment of "im a gam dev" but cant even make a fuckinv fun video game.Braid was a fucking joke, looks like something a kid on newgrounds made for a highachool projectThe Witness aka, never going to be Myst or Talos Principle, hackI dont even know where this dude keeps getting money.
>>741333513The first few puzzles with a new mechanic aren't even really puzzles, they're tutorials to demonstrate intuitively how the mechanic work, so it's a bit unreasonable to say they're "braindead" IMO. It's like the equivalent of reading a pop-up that says how a new mechanic works but you just play the popup instead of reading text which is better design IMO

>>741333678I can tell you're a nigger or mexican.
>>741333048When I played Braid I thought to myself "wow these puzzles sure are clever. I could never conceive of or code this" hidden inside a little Mario Soulja Boy gameSo I followed the creator on social media. And he said funny stuff like>Google+ sucks and will failJust shit like that. Takes that seem obvious in hindsight, but he'd put it bluntly and be right more often than wrong about stuff. IQ isn't really a subtle thing, either you have it or you don't. If you can't tell that Blow is smart, you're probably a midwit. Feel free to list people by name that you think are smarter, alive today. You know, Braid was a very early indie game. Few were doing it at the time, he was kind of an industry visionary.Has anyone here ever heard of Chris Langan? He's got the highest recorded IQ, is right about literally everything. Midwit redditors despise him and spiteful mutants attack at the mere mention of his nameSome people are just smart. Swallow your massive insecure pride and accept that. It's no different than some people being stronger than you or faster than you.I hated the witness btw. I just think Blow is smart going off his projects and the way he speaks.
>>741333647I found west area easiest, definitely the least amount of times I was sitting around trying to figure out how to approach things. Currently I'd rank themheroes > mirrors > promisein terms of difficulty

>>741334267Your dumb, blind statements are easily disproven by the fact that he has released real games. You said absolutely nothing of worth and just came off as a seething retard.
>>741330675He's popular because his coding opinions and skills appeal to the ignorant masses of newbie coders. He says and believes the same falsities newbie coders do, so newbie coders see that as relatable. He's actually tarded.

>>741334406Actually, Baba is You is one of the few games he didn’t rip off.
Just in case anyone's still confused as to why jblow generates so much seethe, it's because he's a master chud that has been unpersoned and targeted by the usual suspects, they even did some shitty hitpiece on bluesky right when the demo was released lol.

>>741334541I've always hated this piss drinking fag

He'll constantly ask why the left does X or why people think Y trump but he literally never goes beyond the question.>never forget vaccine mandatesYeah, I'll never forget every retarded nigger claiming their were gonna be mass deaths caused by the vaccine and 5 years later literally nothing happened

>>741331857Calm down Jonathan
>>741335136>guidelines to make code that's easy to work with are LE BAD because they can situationally harm performanceno wonder he abandoned his game lol
"Yo, this gameplay is lit as fuck!"-Nobody
>>741331042I'm guessing it's actually more like a 100-200h Sokoban game based on how overblown the demo playtime was. But that's still long and I hope it will keep me occupied for a while.
Sokoban is the most boring, one-dimensional puzzle genre. The trailer made his new game actually look interesting though.
If you want an actually good sokoban, play Bean and Nothingness. It's made by people who are actually smart in real life.
Is his videogame fun? Who here has played it? I can't imagine it being that bad because Blow is an adept programmer.
>>741336223I do not care for your gay antagonistic framing, suggest the game again in another thread without being a faggot about it.

>>741332339>if you know the slightest bit about game development and optimizationJust because I know that nowadays devs use paying customers as beta-testers, and game becoming opimized in a few months to a year after release, does not mean that it isn't a scam.
>>741333256I had high expectations and they were met so far in the demo. I've played a lot of Sokoban games and this looks like it will be among the best, but it's a niche genre so I don't expect it to sell as well as The Witness. My only criticisms are performance issues, lack of graphics settings and slightly clumsy controls, but I have confidence that these will be fixed in time for the game's release. I think the publisher may have pushed him to publish a demo before he felt ready (but that might have been for the best).

>>741336771>and barely anything about the game lmao classic /vee/Usually that would be a good criticism of a thread, but what's there to talk about? It's a sokoban clone that overstays its welcome with 100 hours of puzzles (which is too much for a game like this), terrible writing and unoptimized to hell and back? It just looks like a poor effort on his part. The story of him spending 30 mil on it and making an entire programming language to do shit he could do with existing languages is more interesting.

>>741336771he's been pretty infamous since he released braid for constantly trying to refute criticism, he then featured in notoriously pretentious indie game the movie which made him look like even more of a pretentious asshole (according to him speaking on his streams he was happy about the guy playing his game and didn't know they were cutting it like this but who knows). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWqnz-7iQbYThen he released the witness, which was critically received very well and promoted him to auteur status among many for making two very good but very different puzzle games in a row; on the other hand the game got a lot of critique for being pretentious (one puzzle forces you to sit there and watch a prolonged speech he put into the game for a full hour, there are multiple other videos from different sources and audio logs in the game which act more to ruminate on random concepts than to give an actual story), being needlessly esoteric at points, and handling introduction of mechanics in a polarizing way that was viewed as both bloated filler and insufficient depending on who you asked. There's an entire free parody game where many of the jokes are about the witness being pretentious called the looker if you want to look into that. He's also been somewhat politically outspoken in ways people don't like, which have led many (including one of the devs that gave him the rights to use their original game concepts in OotSS) to decry him. It doesn't help that he's also very opinionated and (over)confident and that tends to polarize everyone involved, and incite anger from unsuccessful developers because he's very outspoken about being ahead of most people with his coding (to the point of making his own engine for OotSS for some reason)

I am very pessimistic about this game doing well. I can see several aspects that made The Witness so successful, but after playing this demo, I can tell that it doesn't have the same level of appeal to a general non-puzzle-gamer audience.I watched some other people play it and I'm shocked at how stupid some people are. They'll sit around for 20 minutes banging their head against some of the beginner puzzles where what you need to try seems pretty obvious. When Jon talks about how long the game and demo are going to be (200 hours+), it only makes sense if he has some kind of insight into the average player and it's this, but I don't see that kind of player playing this game very far and being enamored with it enough to tell their friends as much as I can see them doing with The Witness. The fact that he has become a fairly well known streamer and has right-wing opinions alienates what I see being his biggest fanbase; the kind of "spiritual" and wannabe-intellectual people or people who like to be mystified by something that sounds vague and smart, who are 99% leftist. The economy being in absolute shambles certainly doesn't help at all. And as a cherry on top, the main character looks like some kind of Indian (one of the most controversial people at the moment) and her face looks weird and kinda ugly in the new art they're currently using, even the pose and chest armor feels stiff and awkward. Seems like it was done at the last minute though so maybe they'll revise it.It's certainly ballsy that he's burning through multiple US tech salaries for 10 years to make things, but I wonder what his plans and expectations are. I get the sense that he's mistaken about the aspects that made The Witness successful. He talks about this game as if the gameplay is going to be special later on, but the only way this game is going to have mindblowing revelations is through gameplay too complex for the average player. In The Witness it was just seeing "it" and pressing a button.
