The story doesnt change its focus from sephiroth and his plan to summon meteor, it adds to it. Cloud's denial, all those unrealized dreams / lifestream branches fuelling Sephiroth and the whispers no longer being of the planet its all about is supposed to be related to the themes of loss, denial, life and death, letting the past go and look at the future, and ephemerality vs eternity.Like, its not even that complicated.
