As cringe as the festival and lake scene were, the chapter really endeared me to Kris and his character. Knowing how much he likes/loves Susie and how her relationship with Noelle eats at him more as time goes on, hurting himself or throwing himself into water to avoid saying anything that might hurt her feelings, still managing to laugh and play along with her a little even in the route where he was forced to irreparably destroy Noelle's mental state, it paints a nice picture despite him not having any direct dialogue. This part is cope but I don't feel like Toby is painting Suselle as sunshine and rainbows. Kris is clearly all sorts of fucked up about it. Noelle's dad is going the ghost and Susie is already setting her up to live in lala fantasy land (She doesn't know about Rudy yet but I can't imagine it's going to be a frictionless conversation to just leave it all behind). Noelle still feels like she's going through the motions if you "abort" the lake drowning. I don't know about any breakups or anything but it's going to go through something in C6

Played this for the first time recently and was thinking about "fandom ships" among other things. Specifically what I'm mulling over is like... if canon has this stilted and kind of arbitrary romance to "pair characters up," often what fans will actually latch onto is a much more striking relationship between characters who *aren't* directly implied to be into each other. The classic examples of this are generally m/m, Sasuke/Naruto for instance. But these days, things have flipped around a bit: we're getting a lot of "queer, but safely queer" f/f ships in american stuff, which seem mostly like an exercise in checking boxes and pacifying various cultural expectations. So the character relationships which come across as comparatively deeper and more sincere are the ones which aren't regulated by these expectations. Including, sometimes, the m/f relationships.Krusie is straight (you could say), and it is exactly this which puts its shippers in the cultural position of the fujoshi. It's interesting to think about.
