megaman was simply dropped, which is better in retrospect

One is still getting games and is still popular with kids. Quality doesn't have much to do with it.

was mega man ever considered a mascot?
obviously the series had its place, but in the grand scheme of capcom, basically everything in the 90s was secondary to street fighter and fighting games, and then the by the 2000s classic mega man was rarely seen outside of the odd crossover or reference here and there until 9 and 10

I don't see the various disparate Mega Man fandoms at each other's throats the same way Sonicfags are.

megaman has more great games than sonic has games.
>>
>>742245382
I think the trick was distinct parallel series that hardly bleed into the others. Mega Man X didn't kill classic and they can do wacky spinoff settings like Legends or Battle Network.

Or maybe it just has fewer shitty entries to spark fights
>>
>>742245843
X4 overshadowed Mega Man 8 and basically overtook Classic until the X series shat the bed with X6 and X7 respectively harming the sales of X8.

Megaman attracts a fundamentally different flavor of autist than Sonic (post-Adventure, in particular.)
The limited story of most titles and (until very recently) lack of external media makes it harder for little boys to form an unhealthy parasocial attachment to characters from the series that continues into a maladjusted adulthood.
People in the fanbase are thus, on average, just a little bit less insane as a result.
That's my theory, at least.
>>
>>742240864
Sonic never has been been missmamaged. He was shit from day one.

So is this the Megaman fan copium thread? Cause Sonic didn't have 5 different game continuities go into permanent hiatus

I think Sonic overall has had worse mismanagement over the course of its life compared to Megaman, but damn is it close.

During the years where Megaman was getting spammed to hell, quality was all over the place and everyone saw it. Even one of the most successful series they had (Battle Network) shat the bed with 4 and never got back to the same heights it attained. From what I recall hearing from various people who had some contacts in Capcom, the execs were literally confused at why there was such a furor over Legends 3 being cancelled. That was an indicator to me that they had already milked Megaman for all it was worth and they wanted to move on.
>>
>>742251735
Let's not ignore the gap between mm10 and mm11 where they cancelled a bunch of shit and capcom was also doing some humiliation rituals (SFxT's BBA Megaman), please, do not pretend that gap did not exist by saying "but mm is getting games".
However that other anon was right, the gap where MM was dropped and didn't get shit was a better fate than Sonic. Mega Man's last game before the dark gap was Mega Man 10, a pretty fucking cool game, so for MM to go dormant on such a high note before 11's release, compared to Sonic 06 being among the worst pieces of shit ever made then have sega follow that up with shovelware games carried entirely by 2000's angst (or "Aura and hype moments" as the kids say these days), i'd rather be a Megaman fan than a Sonic fan during MM's darkest period.
>>
>>742242406
You got mario kart and mario tennis
>>
>>742240864
As a mega man fan, sonic. Mega man at least has good games rather than a steady stream of mediocrity or worse.
>>
>>742248457
Said continuities are not as interconnected as you may think other than Zero and ZX, with the fomer having a satisfying conclusion that actually did the impossible: Gave the edgy 2000's icon that is Zero a grand finale. Can't say the same for Shadow who keeps getting milked.
>>
>>742240864
Sonic is so mismanaged that ANY fag who isn't mentally retarded(4chan & Chrischan) could make a better TV Show and video game.

Sonic fans like to pretend the series is washed up, and it is in some respects, but the series's frequent multimedia stints and somewhat bold swings with their games ensured it remained relevant and successful all this time.
Mega Man released the same exact game every year and people stopped caring after a while as a result.
Like woah man you mean they're making an EIGHTH Mega Man X game where you fight 8 bosses in any order you want through side scrolling stages? I couldn't get enough of that from the last 7 games! Or the other 8 non-X games they released before that!
Doesn't help that when they did try something new like Battle Network they then proceeded to run that into the ground as well.

This one isn't an average Sonic fan, I can tell by the type of autism he or she uses to channel these sort of ideas.
Also Sonic fans don't even play their own games, let alone other vidya games to know what Gunstar Heroes is.

It's hilarious but sad how the best creators either move on from Sonic or aren't typical Sonicfans that spend 10 hours a day in the chao garden.

I’ll say this, Mega Man has better Collections than Sonic. Take a look at this bullshit low effort cashgrab of games that aren’t even a decade old and still easily accessible.

I wonder which will happen first

Mega Man Legends 3 or Sonic Adventure 3. As far as RPGs it’s hard to say Battle Network and Star Force are true RPGs since it’s more about Deck Building. Meanwhile Sonic has Chronicles and nothing more.
>>
>>742253535
It's easy to balk at now due to the lack of content recently but it's a little insane that 2004 had Mega Man X8, Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Battle Network 4 (Red and Blue editions) all on store shelves.
I can't imagine looking at all that and not being at least a little exhausted with the franchise.

This got me thinking, who was the worst developer that was deemed the “Fathers of said Franchises” Keiji Inafune or Yuji Naka. I’d say Yuji Naka. That would spark another question. Which spiritual successor crashed and burned harder? Mighty No. 9 or Balan Wonderworld?
>>
>>742248210
What was the very first instance of Sonic being mismanaged? I’d say not having a killer app on the Sega Saturn. That would be like the N64 with no Mario 64. Fun Fact: Mario 64 released on June 23rd 1996, think about that date for a second.

>Megaman is still getting new games though?

Even Megaman is not perfect and goes into long hibernations and only occasionally wakes up when there’s an anniversary. It will be interesting where Megaman goes next after Dual Override and Capcom no longer able to rely on Legacy Collections since all that’s left is Legends.
>>
>>742240864
Different flavours of mismanagement. I think that sonic got it worse, I still have some faith left in capcom to deliver a good product. Sega should pay me to play its current shit.
Both survive because of the fan community.
>>

Ohh anon… you’ve never heard of Sonic Boom which was so bad it nearly killed the franchise AGAIN, while making 06 look like a Masterpiece.

You can play most of the 2000s Mega Man games in their respective collections, albeit with a few exceptions like X Command Mission and Battle Network Transmission. They even managed to bring the DS games into collections too.

Sonic’s 2000s games aren’t as easily accessible and Sega still refuses to change that.

I love both franchises despite whatever faults either may have so this is an interesting question to me.

Mega Man
>rapid-fire game spam in the 2000s seemingly exhausted people with only platformers and RPG games, but most of them are actually pretty good or at worst ok (X7 is atrocious)
>following this, Capcom just kills the series outright, only doing collections until 11... which was followed by another collection hell until Dual Override, but at least the collections are good and keep the old games easily accessible, even the DS titles they had to go the extra mile to rework for single screen play
>multimedia stuff is iffy, only Battle Network and Star Force had animes weirdly enough, classic MM had a couple of cartoons but none of them were any good, some comics, few manga as far as I remember
>the Legends 3 PR was nightmarishly bad

Sonic
>quality spirals all over the place with at least 3 games as bad as X7 (06, Boom, Forces), but the series touches on a variety of genres and can't be called stale if nothing else
>mostly consistent stream of games (outside the Saturn era) keep the series in the public eye but Sega is abysmal at supporting older games, pretty much everything from the 2000s is unavailable on modern hardware outside piracy
>Sonic's multimedia presence is underrated, several cartoons and an anime which were all generally popular, tons of comics, some manga as of late, 3 live action movies with a 4th on the way
>they hired fans to make a game so their PR is automatically better than MM

I'd probably say Mega Man is worse off because Capcom killed its room for growth by shelving the series and blaming the fans for its death, but that's looking at it purely from how you'd manage a franchise. Sonic can never outrun the infamy of its worst moments while all Mega Man has to do is put out more games again without overwhelming people to be respected again.
