HEY ASSHOLES STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND POST YOUR FUCKING PROGRESS RIGHT NOW
The game engine I'm using isn't in the picture so I shan't
I have progress in my mind, I'm thinking, it's my 30 year great thinking period
>>742304921I've been trying to figure out the best way to do multiple outfits for characters. The idea that I've been looking into is using a "character sheet" to represent the character, while creating different scenes per costume, with each costume organized in different folders per job. but in reality, I've had that figured out for a while, i've just been procrastinating. I really just need to either shit or get off the pot.
I am still experimenting with making planar shadows like how Rare did in their late N64/early GameCube games. While I'm at it, I'd like to give a "fuck you" to Unity for making light probe groups the stupidest fucking thing in existence.Since I have no pictures at the moment as I am on the road, here's a picture of a snake in my shed that does nothing.
my games 10 year anniversary is in 8 days and i'm not gonna be able to finish the update in time
>>742304921here's what I have so far
>>742306578Keep it up and you'll reach my level soon.
Make Fallguys but with Mario 3D moveset.I'll take my cut now.

>>742305998Neat snek. What do you plan to make with this?
got bored and somewhat depressed, opened up an RPG software I hadn't touched in years, started making a yume nikki-likehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIvzij6NEjInot sure to what degree I'm gonna commit to this
>>742309142The snake is supposed to be eating the deer mice outside but he just sits in his tower. Fucking dick.As for what the shadows are for, it's to make a more authentic experience.
>>742308525Split the function up
I wish my friends didn't all want to make a game only to approach it from all the wrong angles and talk about game mechanics like what ice cream you're going to order. "Players need to have access to sprinkles and hotsauce for their neapolitan but it must go between the scoops." "Hmm, yes, I agree!"It's too late to back out now.
>>742310173It's never too late. You don't have to stay on a sinking ship just because you're friends with the idiots who drove it into an iceberg.
Do I need a social media? I hate social media. I just wanna make games.
>>742310698Do you want your game to sell? You can just make a game without one, but no one is going to know about it if you don't advertize.
>>742310698Then just make games. Though you'd do better to make friends that also make games. But you probably won't because you seem like a bitter sociopath who assumes the worst in people and makes excuses never to connect then treats others like the ones who made that choice.
>>742310932the irony of this post
>>742310967Is any of it wrong?
>>742310698You just post clips of your game and make a page. You don't have to actually engage with anyone.
>>742311217making a blanket assumption about a dude based on three sentences is pretty funny when said assumption is "I bet you make blanket assumptions about people"
>>742310016They are, I mean i want to do something and want to make sure you as a player cant break the game doing something in an order. Like picking up an item triggers a quest, if you allow that to happen for example.

I'm adept at 3d modeling, what's a simple 3d game concept I can prototype in a weekend?
>>742310386I don't want them to hate me.It doesn't help that I'm the only programmer-minded person so everything they do is a mess in the editor and everything I do doesn't draw the interest of the people who can actually do art and music so I'm working with lifeless placeholders.I went into it thinking "Oh, we're going to have a first meeting about how our first project will be small and we might even rip off an old but tried and true board game because lots of them are fun and have no vidya equivalent, and are often easiest to design backwards as any mathematical game should be, or at least I'd pitch that idea and... oh everyone's talking about characters and now we're making a generic JRPG and we're two months deep."
>>742304921I've been practicing to draw sprite work, building the framework for my dungeon crawler, staring at blender from a safe distance because I'll have to deal with that for 3d environments. Lost, confused, uncertain, out of my lane.
>>742311934>tried and true board game because lots of them are fun and have no vidya equivalentI'm curious, name one example of this
>>742312052That's kinda his point there's not a lot of games that take very simple board game mechanics and just build some graphics around it.
>>742306578You're hired.
>>742311770Why dont you make a game about the thing you do for hours then?
>>742313179It's not something to be proud of ...

>>742305229>>742314004Great you get to skip posting then! But you HAVE to fuck.
Damn, I wanted to make a greatsword-only game but realized it conflicts with the soulslike mindset where having weapon choice and having simple movesets is more interesting to them than 1 deep moveset.I don't think a 'weapon art' system on different weapon skins is nearly as effective.

>>742314614>Shame the guys that made 3d games on the gba didnt release the source to their engineWoah, which one?
Progress from last night, I'm at work...So far, at least for this dungeon, I've got>Primary attack, and the first tool, a handfan that blows air.>Rolling log spike traps, spiked floor traps serving as barriers, pit falls, projectile shooting walls.>Aimless wandering big bugs, sandworms that appear on random sand tiles and leap to another random sand tile within a certain distance, a mandrake enemy that shoots projectiles in cardinal directions when the player is seen, a mummy enemy that moves towards the player in a wobbly sine wave pattern and feels no knockback, rolling beetles that have to be flipped over with the dungeon tool to damage them (also can activate switches)>Floor switches and push blocks, throwable pots, windmill switches that require pic related and brazier fires that can be blown out. Doors with various switch states (requiring a key, kills, or other switch).Feels like I'll need some more still, but its getting there? Level design is hard though... I've only got three rooms so far that I think make sense to keep. Rest are just tests.I'd say part of the struggle is also not abusing the dungeon tool/gimmick TOO much, you know? Like, so far, its doing a lot, and that makes it feel superfluous. Hrmm.

>>742315793I've always been a fan of O3DE but it's never been stable on Windows, and after recently switching to Linux the engine now just werks. Also Godot has always been a stop gap for me mostly because their 3D renderer is hot garbage and they either refuse or are too incompetent to improve it. The fact that they don't have a scalable renderer and you need to choose between 3 pipelines is proof enough on how bad it is. Atom is world class by comparison.

>>742320283I'm so lazy now that my idea for a game is to have it play itself. Like an auto battler. Something I can put on in the background while I read something else.
>>742312052Settlers of Catan, Agricola, anything really. They all boil down to a limited number of resources, some games use limited RNG, you could feasibly design a limited AI that plays moderately well even if you're an amateur. The rules are almost always simple enough you can change them minorly to get around "theft" if you're making this for sale, and of course change the theme. Most boardgames made after the time they started being cool (Gen X/Y, Wil Wheaton, whatever) are sadly overcomplicated to play in person, which will also frustrate a first time vidya dev.Oh and if you're going to be adventurous, you could always convert it into a "normal" game format.Let's take Agricola for example, you have 2 people (actions) per day, have an upkeep, and there are resources (wood/clay/stone)Now just make it Stardew Valley, you have enough energy to do "2 things" and you physically walk to these action spaces, and after a few days we have to pay a tax (food)Now let's be smarter, let's make it Starstuck Vagabond, we now have a real game to work off (which Yahtzee didn't) and a skin to put on it, now wood/clay/stone is steel/dilithium crystals/crew, our food tax is now a wage tax or a fuel tax or anything we want!Of course you should change it more than using the exact same game board, progression, and deck of cards as Agricola but you see my point. To say more of the concept of board games: if you want to "make" one, look at an existing one in reverse. Plenty of games are designed with a "goal" and so you measure how long it takes you to get there, sometimes by exhaustively going through every possibility. This applies to video games too where you know how much XP or money a player can get from every level all the way to the final boss.

Why dont you all try to make a game together? Get all the devs together decide lead by random roll. Make a contract for profit sharing evenly amongst all devs participating. Then after the first game is done elect a lead based on contributions and general smarts. Formally make a company. Use these threads as a means to advertise for new members and create a company.
>>742313573Yeah.>he shouted duuuudeHad this basically twice before.First time: didn't start because no-one took charge, ironically we had 3 coders in that group and with engine familiarity.Second time: artist friend "Hey I want to do this but I'm really shy so can you do the entire game concept, code, and tell me what art you need! OwO"I stupidly agreed, collapsed inwardly when orientating myself for using Gamemaker 2 for the first time. I did try to start, asked for assets, got them, they didn't work but I didn't point this out as I didn't specify what I actually needed nor knew my requirements, and this may have made things so cold that it was why he stopped working on more assets. Then four months passed and I said "Hey, can we talk, I stopped working because it was hard but can't stop thinking about it, I want to give you and myself closure", "Oh, yeah, I knew you stopped bothering months ago"... and that made me angry and makes me think he stopped working on assets because he got bored fast. That same artist is in the five friend group for the current thing. He's more consistent at contributing because it's now a social club (we all need positive feedback to do anything in our lives). But it really makes me think (self reflecting too) that the whole "I wanna make a game!!1!" is just because monkey see, monkey do, and not because anyone has a plan, so I just see my friends as a bit mindless and wonder if they'd be more productive co-penning a book to buy on amazon.I have a vague plan for my solo project. It should make money. I just can't find the emotional drive to continue it.
>>742322818It'll be honest, you sound like a difficult person to work with. If you're the one telling the story and it comes across as that, I can only imagine the parts you're *not* talking about. I am a programmer and I like tinkering.I have several contrarian friends and have also been taught by society to be a contrarian, so please take this as kindly as I can make it come across:No-one likes you when you take the side of a third party being complained about. If you're looking for me to expose some secret drama, you're not only going to get it by asking for it, and if I am truly a self absorbed difficult person who is unable to see the point of view of my friends, then all I would tell you is "They stink!!1!1!"I am an introvert who suffers in silence. I have no managerial experience so I cannot simply organize a project on a whim, especially a hobby project. The first game group collapsed because everyone was an introvert. The second attempt with just me and one friend collapsed because of mutual introversion again and ended with a whiplash of "Hey I'm sorry abo-" "Yeah, I know you quit. And I didn't want to talk to you about it." even if those weren't the exact words said. The third is just me taking orders and not getting a back-and-forth because I'm not here for the "Friday pizza party and team building exercises where we all share where we see ourselves in 5 years", I'm here to "work" and asking for concrete requirements (and explaining code peculiarities to people who struggle to script + are getting orientated for the first time with the IDE and git itself) is a massive social wall builder because it makes people uncomfortable, which is also why I don't undermine someone who says "Uh, you can't do that, that's like, really hard and impossible" by saying "Here's 5 different ways you can do it in code, it's literally just math, lmao, bet you feel like an idiot now" and instead privately provide options AFTER the discord webcam circle jerk.Thank you for the psychoanalysis, I hope you enjoyed my one of you.

>>742326069>At first I had gravity being applied in every single statei think that's the tell of the flaw in your implementation, you're making the states do too many things. i think, conceptually, state is just that, a state. it checks things like "should i switch to a different state?" and such. if you have a state that does a specific thing, like "isdead" state, then you can put some specific logic in there that you won't repeat anywhere else, but if you have "move", "sprint", "sneak" or whatever states, if you're gonna put move logic in every one, you're just gonna repeat shit endlessly, which in my opinion is a code smell.
