Zoomerfag here. Was gaming and the internet really that great in the 2000s or is it just the power of nostalgia?
>>
>>742326141
The internet wasn't better per se but the average IQ level of people on the internet was higher, and there wasn't as much absolute slop like short-form content and low quality AI-generated trash.

It was a bit harder to get on the internet, and people weren't using the internet from their phones, and those factors filtered a lot of people who would otherwise be contributing low-effort trash
>>

>>
>>742326141
It a single negro or gay was actually offended and they used the slurs, too. To believe that guetta ended racism with his shoutout is the equivalent of deep psychological issues. Heck, people fall in love with hallucinating chatbots.
>>
>>742326141
it was used as a slur but there was less homophobia, especially on 4chan the whole trap thing was very normalized versus now everyone screaming tranny

also, it was better in general because you predominantly had above average intelligence people on the internet and in video games. there were no normie phone fags with a 90 IQ shitting everything up like they do now

I'd rather go back to these times and have normies laugh at you for being a """nerd""" and playing video games and being on the internet, than sharing the spaces with these fucking normies again

You're not a real zoomer you fucking poser. Fuck outta here
>>
it was less corporate if nothing else
I was still just posting on 4chan anyway so all that's really changed for me is YouTube has simultaneously become more soulless but also a more consistent source of entertainment with more structured 'shows' rather than randoms with a camcorder miming the lyrics to the Pokemon theme song or Newgrounds people making edgy video game cartoons where most of the novelty came from the idea that someone would put in the effort to make a whole 5 minute cartoon just to put it on the internet for free rather than the content actually being good
>>
Society peaked in 1950 and has been on a steady decline since. Everything is always getting worse.
>>
>>742326663
oh and back then people used the internet for things other than culture wars, astroturfing, disinfo campaigns and psyops. that was pretty good. there was much less of an appetite for politics invading every single corner of the internet beyond people making fun of bush
>>
>>742326141
there were way less gaurdrails and you could easily stumble upon illegal stuff and uncensored shit way more easily than nowadays.

Google was actually worth its shit as a search engine and didn't gave two fucks about what you were searching.

the searches and subcultures weren't dominated by two or three giant corporations, everything had its own personal site, and people knew how to access it, writing "www.somefuckingsite.com" on the address bar wasn't an obscure magic that only a selected individuals knew how to do it.

ads on sites actually advertised their own site, again, with the "www." site, no social network bullshit.

the internet was something secluded to your living room.
It did not follow you outside your house.
It did not dominate your friends conversations on useless drivels about what's happening with that influencer.

The thing closer to "social network" was MSN which just let you add people you actually knew through their email. It did not suggest "people you may know". it was up to you.
It also had a personal blog space you could manually customize, either if you were a retard it had hand holdings, and if you were more knowledgeable, it let you customize HTML.

Early WoW (vanilla-tbc-wrath) was truly magical to play, the people weren't min-maxing drones who resented you and bailed the second someone died, the spontaneous pvp was incredible back then, i never had more fun in wpvp than in TBC on the isle of quel danas. I was on a medium pop, balanced pvp server, something 95+% of modern WoW players have NEVER experienced. It was truly something special, never to be experienced again.

The custom game scene in WC3, Killing Floor 1 and CS:Source was some of the very best fun you could have gaming.

Thats -all- gone now. Yes, the internet was bad, but the soul was great. But echoes of it remain, Meccha Chameleon is a variant of hide+seek, a custom CS:Source game that was popular, its exploded in popularity for a reason.
>>
It was a product of our time and we have now become fossils.
It was great and you won't get to experience it sadly, I get why your generation is nostalgic for it but nostalgia is a trap.
If you want to live in the world you'd do best to make peace with fitting in with current culture.

Discord is one of the worst things to happen to internet culture, second only to social media.
Forums were much better for community, quality, and discoverability of information since they were indexed by search engines.

Good things about the 2000's:
>Internet was FUN, discover something new every day, so many unique subcultures and interesting communities
>Movies (lots of edgy/cringekino stuff before everyone became self-conscious about everything)
>Games (if you had a DS with a flash cart you know how awesome it was, console and PC online was fully fledged, dev teams were still small and cheap enough that you'd see people trying all sorts of crazy stuff)
>Each new tech rollout changed the game, remember going from a CD player to an iPod?
>People still read and talked about books
>People still went outside and did stuff
>Tech wasn't good enough to be truly horrifying yet

Bad things about the 2000's:
>Politics
>Middle east war/terrorism
>Batshit insane patriotism
>Degrading privacy, surveillance state can finally be realized
>Being gay/nerdy wasn't accepted at all, if you watched something basic like Haruhi people treated you like a freak
>Religious flexibility wasn't a thing, good luck if you were "alt" anywhere Christian
>08 financial crisis wiping out jobs and futures, lots of people ended up on the streets
>>
>>742326141
It was better before engagement was monetized. Now you have third-worlders running bot farms on X and Facebook that just copy whatever post got a lot of hits to the point where you'll see the same exact post get millions of views like 10 times throughout the course of a year, all for the money of course.
This same mentality infects everything. All the awful AI slop, all the incel-ish posts that make men as a whole look bad, all the antagonistic buzzwordy posts on here - you look under the hood and it's a third-worlder 9 times out of 10. Gaming discussion is ruined as a result, and discussion about anything is ruined too. The vast majority are phoneposters too because it's all they can afford, thus further contributing to the bot-like, low effort posts.

Dead Internet Theory? No, it's just there's certain demographics of people that contribute posts that are so fucking low quality that you couldn't imagine in a million years they're not a bot, lol.
>>
>>742326141
I miss when gay was an insult or used to describe something bad.
>>
>>742327091
That's what I was hoping too but for Earth; Give up on the Internet and start some other mesh network.
The problem is that the circumstances that popularized the Internet are no longer there, we do not lack communications and sharing capabilities, we're so done with that shit that we get anxiety when we get a phone call nowadays.
The appeal would be more privacy and more of a wild west vibe again but governments could see it as only that and shut it down entirely.

That's why I said nostalgia is a trap, not many people care about a new Internet today so expecting it to take off and becoming as good as mid-late 2000s when it peaked is a very unrealistic thing to hold onto.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Good times. Gay was a great insult. She was really anti trans men because she said "They can't just claim to be women, they didn't have to grow up and one and truly experience being a woman". We broke up in 2016 just before all the trans stuff really started to take off and given how progressive she is, I wonder if she has changed her views to fit in with the progressive crowd

Even the most mindraped NPCs are starting to look around and realize they were duped and that this whole experiment we've been under is a complete failure. I'm telling you right now, people are waking up exponentially and they're pissed. Everyone can sense how awful things are, how it's a race to the bottom in terms of quality, and how there's nothing to look forward to. There's nothing more radicalizing than just looking at video from the past, 30 years ago feels like an alien world at this point.

the corporate madness in the 80s is the reason why the 90s and 00s largely had such a huge rebellious phase away from the boring and mundane sleek colors people were trying to trap you to in a ritualistic masochism for profit and uselessness, Millennials and Gen-Xers were just fucking sick and tired of the same old shit and that's how the counter-cultures came to be as they did, current alt-right movements and so forth are just the same trend: counter culture to the mainstream propaganda and corporate accepted models to reclaim one's agency against boring ass life people are trying to force you down to, its a cycle that will never end.

It's not their fault, because again, you have corporations that have figured out everything in regards to capturing eyeballs and keeping them on whatever website they're on. Billions of dollars of research and data have gone into this process of perfecting the formula that makes an algorithm most addicting to each individual user, feeding them a hugbox for their opinions with just enough, maybe 10%, of a different POV to enrage or demoralize them to keep things interesting. Social media algorithms have mindfucked people to the point where they don't even know how to actively browse the Internet, they just passively plug in to the algorithms and forget what they just watched 10 seconds later.

It's worse than TV ever was.

With the amount of bullying being reported the past few years, I have to laugh my ass off at that delusion. The culture hasn't changed, the only thing that changed is the Internet allowing for bubbles to be formed around niche identities who then make themselves more visible than they actually are because they are terminally online and afraid of going outside of their homes, while playacting like things are different due to cope and commodification money corporations give them like cheap prostitutes. The peak of ear;y 2020s TikTok and Twitter leftism was fucking retarded but TikTok and Instagram are now edgy cesspools like 4chan. The switch has flipped a bit.
t. 22

>no culture
There is a culture but people larp with past subcultures, just continue meme culture with new memes or do the whole wigger shit. The scene knowledge of old that taught people to innovate and constantly push forward and do something new wasn't properly passed down imo. That or people are just content with larping without caring. There were the oldest Zoomers who were there when the new mid 2010s stuff were being innovated and then everything started stagnating.

>they don't know how to use adblockers
depends on who you're talking too. A mass of normies are now on social media more than the past. People say we're "digital natives" but that doesn't guarantee the knowledge that only nerds would have. Only passable smart phone competency.

>>742326274

this along with Roblox footage and NIGGER being looped. FUCK NIGGERS FUCK NIGGERS being looped. Also the /pol/ antisemitism that is normalised on those spaces as well. But there would be tons of people on TikTok and Instagram that are doing business as usual.

>>742327661
this. the whole thing has been a mistake. We've been suckered by the attention economy for the influencers and fell into political bullshit. All went to shit sometime between 2016 - 2020 imo.

What's different now is that there's no room to just be bored and create things. Phones also suck for creating memes or new pictures, and phones are how most people browse the Internet now.

Bare minimum the internet was an active choice. in the first half of the 2000s anyway. It was something you voluntarily got for your house and it was something you commited to when you used it. In contrast to today when it is just another must have utility to exist in modern life like water and electricity.

"I am going to connect to the internet."

"I have done what I needed to do, I will now disconnect from the internet."

What's weird is like I've flipped a little bit to a certain degree. I could not deal with real life at all so I would spend all my time hiding on the internet. It's safe for me here. But now that every gay nigger retard treats this like home I try to stay away.

Used to be really exciting when the internet influenced real life in any way. They were separate worlds. Like with Project Chanology or 9000 penises. Seeing something online and then it happening in real life with tangible effects was novel.

Now its seems to be culture starts online and it stays online and real life is starting to feel fake you know.

Idk whatever I'm going through it right now hope that made sense.

The harsh truth is that normalfags have never been the problem with the internet. The real issue is that the percentage of extreme degenerate freaks has significantly increased online since then and they command influence over large swathes of people and corporations due to their numbers and the self-propagating nature of the environments they foster.

normies are a problem because the corpos and government are interested in their feeble brains and they can't handle it so the enshittification of the internet ensued. Then yes we of course we have the toaster fucker freaks as well, like you can't make a new imageboard besides 4chan if you're not really rich because it will be flooded with illegal materials instantly.
>>
>>742329323
I haven't heard the term "surf the web" in years, as it implies you're actively browsing the Internet on your own. There's nowhere to go anymore except the same 5 websites that are algorithm'd to death, but are where everything is happening, leading to FOMO.
>>
>>742326242
it was vastly better you fucking retard. is this what zoomers tell themselves?

the web used to actually be a massive thing you could explore before 90% of activity was consolidated into a handful of giant highly-controlled corpo social media platforms. IRC, newsgroups, forums etc were incredibly diverse places. censorship was unheard of; you could say nigger on sites for children and there'd be philosophical discussions about why that freedom is important.
search engines actually worked and were necessary because you'd discover new shit every day, by actively following your interests, instead of just vacantly scrolling feeds.
we also had infinite sick-ass browser games and it's weird those basically just vanished when flash died. a lot of them weren't even flash-based. and to go along with that, discussion was a hell of a lot more earnest and productive because everyone wasn't brainfucked or a bot. /v/ was never good but in the early days most threads were like "hey look at this cool thing i found, wanna play" or "let's have a conversation about something we like"

kill yourself and then eat a dick

Having loved through the era, the only people who were ever a little weird about it were women, by 2010 everyone from losers to jocks were playing video games on some varying, semi-regular basis (free time permitting, having actually hung out with jocks, they were often busy with extracurriculars like football or what-have-you)

I don't know how to describe it to you other than it felt like the wild west, and everything was laid back. It was uglier that's for sure site layouts were pretty garbo, and aesthetically all over the place. But it felt like I was consuming a lot more content that was made by regular people instead of corpos, just because they wanted to make it, not even for profit? Pedos were pretty much everywhere and never really hid it reddit used to have like fucking r/jailbait, so yeah a lot of those oldfag reddit greybeards were pretty just out in the open tech pedos high overlap with early 4chan users. Idk can you ask a more specific question?

Truthfully, I'd much rather be friends with a normie than a mentally ill terminally online degenerate, but normies are the reason that everything is allowed to become a race to the bottom, because they lack the context. They're the same people that will buy the newest remake of an old game and not see how generic and bad gaming has become. The Internet has gone through 3 "Eternal Septembers"
>Windows 95 release with the Start menu, making it easier than ever to go online with AOL pushing free 1000 hour CDs
>iPhone release and ubiquidy from 2007-2012, bringing in millions of people for the first time
>COVID lockdowns
Each of these brings in millions of new people for the first time who fall prey to all the scams and go along with the decreased quality of websites because it's all they've ever known. It used to be drilled into people's head to NOT put any identifying information about yourself online, for your privacy and safety. We now live in a post-privacy era where no one cares and we're so far down the commode that it doesn't even matter anymore.

Jocks in my country were into gaming but mostly CS, sports games, racing games, roleplaying games outside of Bethesda titles and Final Fantasy weren't hugely popular, Warhammer? accepted by jocks as that cool nerdy shit about genocides and shit. (the mini-painting gave points towards those jocks who were into arts.) Shit was funny, there was a tier of how accepted certain nerdy shit was, fighting and wrestling games were 100% acceptable.

Like another anon said, zoomers grew up being bit by the internet bug frame 1 of their existence. I was born in 1997, there was a brief, (but memorable) amount of time before i was on the internet and videogames all the time, i had to leave the house and find shit to do, often i was hanging out with a kid like 3-4 years younger than me because there just werent any other kids my age in the neighborhood. Hell i wasnt even gaming on a computer until high school, i was playing gamecube and xbox 360 (was wholly unconscious of xbox live for a while, and when i started playing halo 3 online with friends from school, it was over from there)

It was a decade of perpetual, obvious decline shoved right in your face and celebrated the whole time. The decade in which the dudebro conquered the industry, and nearly every worthwhile studio was razed to the ground on the altar of AAA consolidation. The only good thing I can say about it is that it was falling from such a high point, that you almost didn't notice things were getting worse for the first half of it. And that even during the most dogshit eras of artistic production, you'll get a few rough gems that will stand out after the sieve of time does its thing.

The early 2000s were a playground for those of us who partook in hogging. If you did not care what your friends thought and pursued your desires for chubby women there would never a weekend pass that you wouldn't be in bed with a new girl. If you were emo you had even more freaky chubby girls that would do anything for a shred of attention. They were beautiful times for chubby girl appreciators. They'd play vidya with you, suck and fuck you and be quiet while hanging out with your friends. I miss many things about the early 2000s, but the endless stream of easy, chubby pussy.. I lament over this every now and then. I really don't like discord and use it as little as possible, but sometimes you actually just have to go there sometimes. For instance if you need to troubleshoot a large mod or an indie game or something, there's no forum except for maybe the steam forum which is just full of ESLs that can barely communicate with each other without foaming at the mouth. The amount of vidya guides and niche information hidden behind some discord server you literally cannot find on any web search engine is insane. MMOs are especially awful about this, but the genre is dead anyway so who cares.

>Internet speed was worse
It was in accordance with the overall amount of data people were capable of feeding it. Unless you're talking early ADSL era which you'd have to be 40 to even really remember it.
People didn't have 4k cameras with the net access on demand in their pockets and social media services filled with petabytes of useless reels and people competing for attention weren't really a thing either.
In hindsight the proliferation of hi-tech mobile devices and bandwidth expansion kind of fucked a lot of things up but it was inevitable, especially when you consider that the net was designed by darpa and was always going to end up this way. The whole entertainment and business side of things were just sides effect really. I doubt the governments ever intended for the people to have such a powerful tool, hence their attempts to slow it down by fragmenting it and introducing IDs and such (no it's not to protect your children).
