If you play it with the lighting mod (forgot what it was called) that gives the game real-time lighting, it actually does look amazing. The issue is that the game could never achieve that in 2006 so it looks like shit as a result. It's a similar situation to Halo 2.

The big thing for me besides the feeling of purpose, intention, and actually feeling made by a human is that visual clarity was just so much fucking better. Like I swear to fuck, you can tell developers used to actually think about it a lot and it was a heavy consideration to the point I'm willing to bet some cool stuff got axed entirely because of bad clarity, whereas now I don't think it's even talked about once. Everything is just so fucking noisy, busy, full of effects, etc, you can very easily miss what should be OBVIOUS paths because of it

Open world ubislop style Monster Hunter basically yeah, less skill expression focused, you will spend more time looking at the enemy, applying status effects and peeling of armor than you will looking at yourself and executing combos. The core combat gameplay and navigation are decent fun as are some of the puzzles but the open world is none the less of the ubislop template. Hard carried by possibly the best visuals in any modern game, performs really well for how it looks as well.

In some ways I think they actually do. New games are fully of blur and smears, temporal artifacts, ghosting, slowly-updating light effects and all kinds of garbage, poor performance that needs scaling and so on. Older games running at high res look crystal clear and razor sharp, so they do have at least that going for them.

I miss how level design worked together with art. Like how you could immediately tell "yep there's a path over there" without any effort or markers. Today it's all buried and there's no point in doing anything but follow the gps arrow. Not much of a fan of the cartoony/wow artstyle popular from the early to late 2000's though.
