Unless you somehow had this pic saved from before 2000, there is no way your system wouldn't default to png/jpg. Gif is a worse format in every way. It's only purpose is for little animated forum avatars and old website banners. My guess? This originally WAS part of some animated gif banner like you'd see in the old internet days. One day someone decided to crop out the animations. They kept the file format so now it's just a single frame gif.
