Why did edginess go out of style?

it'll come back eventually

Because faggotry is the new trendy thing. For how much longer remains to be seen.
>>
>>743730749
Being excessively vulgar and anti-social was co-opted by all of the lamest faggots ever.
>>
>>743731949
>implying edgelords andfaggots aren't the same thing
>>
>>743730749
It quickly became self parody. Edge ironically needs finesse to be written well.
>>
We're actually right on time to see some "edgy revival". Especially since "cringe" has been dying as a concept as young people now just embrace doing whatever they want and we see "cringe" clothing styles from the 90s and early 2000s return.

I give it 1-2 years max before we have a major revival of shadow the hedgehog edge aesthetics.
>>
It's funny how edginess went out of style and then video games were immediately overrun by gays and trannies. Almost like there's some kind of correlation
>>
>>743734536
Autism... Autism is the correlation
>>
>>743734536
Edginess was dead and buried by 2007
>>
>>743734671
It had a lagging tail that lasted until 2011 where people made fun of newly released edgy games.
>>
People started being scared of having courage in taste.
Which means evening the courage to have bad taste. People used to have confidence in their slice and would let it be with its target audience. Let the sgitty teenagers be edgy and enjoy their edge taste without having to bombarded them rules or extremes.
The mainstream audience were one of the worst for upholding this judgement which in turn meant they were scared of their own tastes being judgement. Which means the 360 era was being flattened down completely to brown, High fidelity and gameplay being the only last bastion of a true taste.
I don't meant taste I a high art / low art sense because I feel that has collapsed but the courage to say I am enjoying this shit without an excuse.
Goths becoming standardised into a sex symbols after the true bad but confident taste People left is a good example. Another is cosplay when you look at old photos and old cans even in Japan, it's dodgy wigs and closet cosplays of people having fun. Not perfectly matching wigs with China made full costumes that get traded about. The courage to have bad taste has been lost. Which includes the courage to enjoy edge.
>>
"Cringe" became a thing. People were obsessed by not being perceived as being cringe. That era is now ending and no one cares anymore but it was very important.

Deviant art "nothing personell" and those 2 boys in a parking lot roleplaying kingdom hearts 2 edginess were all perceived and labeled as "cringe". Now people label it "sincere" and actually crave it.

We went from edgy to layers of irony and never taking anything seriously at all because it deflected criticism and labels of "cringe" you could never care or be serious ever again because you would always be considered cringe.

Now people are sick and tired of the layers of irony and I think this mindset peaked with Rick & Morty which people now tend to hate.

The pendulum has swung and now everyone wants sincerity again and doesn't care about being cringe anymore so we will probably see edginess return very soon.

Jak and Daxter is such a classic of example of "they wouldn't make this today".

- Daxter's whole "hey baby" womanizing attitude
- Fat people jokes
- Each game basically having its own 'bond girl'
- Male angst is made to look cool and isn't mocked
>>
It is all a spectrum and perception of the current era.
For example, it is not shocking that people are starting to lighten up when it comes to the brown and piss era of games.
>>
Loved that game, never thought about it being edgy
>>
>>743734917
>"Cringe" became a thing.
Was already a thing in the 90s except we didn't say "cringe" we said "gay" and it was even more rutheless.
>>
>>743735060
I replayed the trilogy a couple of months ago and was shocked by the amount of fat jokes and the insanely animated jiggling tits scene of Tess in Jak 2.

But I genuinely think you can pull off a daxter "sleeze" character as well as bond girls nowadays, no one would care.

The fat jokes might also work because Ozempic kind of destroyed the body positivity movement because it turns out people don't give a fuck about fat people if they themselves can just become skinny now by taking ozempic
>>
>>743735141
"Gay" is othering. "Cringe" is shameful.
Both are judgements but have different ramifications.
>>
>>743735141
Different mindset though. "Cringe" was just a word to denounce anything sincere. Gay was just "this is faggy/bad/weird". Cringe was only ever used to mean "this person is sincere" at the start, of course the word started mutating over time and eventually it just became "I think this is bad" like gay in the 90s and early 2000s
>>

>>
>>743735228
Edginess was already a thing in the 90s with grunge in the music scene. Nirvana was full edgelord shit
>>
>>743730749
Insecure soillennials crying "edgelord" about anything that isn't 90's children's media
>>
>>743735228
90s rap and hiphop was just edginess for black people, skater culture, grunge, rock and "hacker culture" was all edginess for different demographics in the 90s. Not top down at all.

I would say it ended because of smartphones and social media and the concept of "cringe" smartphones meant everything was always filmed or photographed at any time and social media means it would be shared with people you know so "cringe" started dominating and edginess as well as all the subcultures mentioned above went away.
>>
>>743735310
I'm a millennial and fucking hated when "edgelord" or "ow the edge" was constantly being spammed on 4chan in the late 00s and early 2010s every time you wrote something that wasn't ironic and had a slightly negative implication or connotation. Those posters did so much damage to 4chan culture in general.
>>

Nirvana had a lot wallowing in sadness. Marilyn Manson is more stereotypical 90s edgeness.

Who do you think was the target demographic for that media? Millennials.

Who do you think the target demographic is for marvel dogshit? Gen Z
Who is writing marvel dogshit? Gen X
>>
>>743730749
JAK 2 tried to cash in on the GTA hype, JAK3 tried to cash in on the mario kart hype: neither were as good as the first game. only Ratchet & Clank were fun games throughout. Sly Cooper was mid.
>>
>>743736284
>Who do you think was the target demographic for that media? Millennials.
Generally kids/young teens aren't the target demographic for adult stuff, it would be core teens and adults.
>Who do you think the target demographic is for marvel dogshit? Gen Z
Like we don't examples of thirty somethings seeing every marvel movie ever.
>Who is writing marvel dogshit? Gen X
That's true, but in the world of adult animation it is current millenials.
In any case, I'm just pointing out how silly this whole ordeal is, generation warfare does nothing but obfuscate the real core problem: Bad media. Full stop. Target audience and creator generations be damned.
>>
>>743736186
No that's counterculture. Edgy wasn't a specific counterculture, most countercultures were edgy back then though: #1 rap/r&b/hiphop - #2 skaters/metal/goths - #3 hackers/gamers/emos

Group 1 was minorities, Group 2 was normalfags, Group 3 was nerds/autists

The director just doesn't like dialogue in his movies because he thinks it distracts from the quality of the animation, that's it. It says a lot about you that you think silence is the same as "being deep".

Nigga what? I am more referring to the philosophical sections like the scene on the boat.
The manga touched on that stuff, but the movie stretched that out.

>>
>>743736951
I love Jak 1 and 2, it's Jak 3 that is boring and a clear rush-job from a disinterested Naughty Dog. Jak 1 may be one of the best collectathons ever, and Jak 2 is consistently difficult from start to finish which made it a perfect next game for the kids who beat Jak 1 a couple years before.
>>
>>743736841
The boat scene is amazing because it shows you the world while not hitting you over the head with some shitty monologue.

>>743736895
The "droning shots" are an amazing display of world building and animation quality as well as a mood setting piece. It has nothing to do with being deep.

Also the original manga and the new show are dogshit for being overly colorful like fortnite and unserious like marvel while having way too much yapping and dialogue instead of worldbuilding and nice slow animated shots like the 1995 peak of the franchise. The director realized people just want to see cool scenes and enjoy the mood, not see a squeeky ADHD girl bounce around the screen while yapping about shit no one cares about.
>>
luv jak & daxter. 'ate ratchet & clank. 'ate sly cooper. Simple AS
>>
The ONLY criticism of Jak II that I agree with is that they needed a few addition connections between city sectors. The PS2's loading couldnt handle it though so for some sections you basically have to follow a straight line in a loop around half the city to get to the place located right next to you on a map.

Crying about it being a "Gta clone" exposes you as being too young to remember just what GTA3 did to the industry. EVERYONE wanted to do what Rockstar was doing... it was new and exciting.
>>
>>743736609
Jak 1 has way more replayability because of its short runtime and speedrunning potential. Jak 2 has a lot of fetch quests and A/B like GTA which hasn't aged well because of the oversaturation of open world games that everyone is completely fatigued with in 2026.
>>
>>743737121

Am I the only one that loved Jak 1 then got mindblown by Jak 2 and loved it even more and got again mindblown by Jak 3 loving it yet even more?

I was waiting for Jak 4 my entire adult life until I gave up when Last of Us 2 was revealed.

I fucking hated all uncharted games and while I finished Last of Us 1 it was merely mediocre in my opinion.
>>

>>
>>743737073
"it's always night and everything is gray in cyberpunk cause it sucks to be in cyberpunk" is the lamest way to portray it. In the first episode of the new show we see orphans being traded like cattle, but does the world care? Nope it's as colorful as ever. Which is the real horror
>>
>>743737436
I'm going to be honest I never watched the show I went into a comic store in the 90s after watching the movie and saw the manga and thought it was some shitty artist that failed to capture the spirit of the movie and placed it back. I had no intention of watching the new show because it looks like a fortnite animation about the virtues of transgenderism. I'm good, but glad you enjoy it.
>>

>>

You are in a thread talking about edgy aesthetics and people loving that aesthetic. Of course people here will gravitate towards liking the edgy 1995 movie and not liking the whimsical childish tone of the manga and new anime series.
>>
>>743737689
It was extremely cool to ride in a dessert and shoot giant dinosaurs with grenade launchers, which was extremely technically impressive for the time.
>>
>>743737718

it's literally just edgy scifi aesthetic from the 90s with power armor with wide shoulders etc. Literally lifted from arnold schwarzenegger movies about future cops
>>
>>743735060
Don't forget every female character is a semen demon (besides Onin)
>>
>>743737829
The manga comes from the 1980s and that's clear in the aesthetics. It doesn't have that 90s edgy feeling to it like the 1995 movie does.

80s wasn't edgy if anything they had a more casual low-stakes marvel feeling to them. No one would call arnold schwarznegger movies edgy
>>
>>743737883
terminator is definitely edgy. Just not emo
>>
The animation in Jak 1 is so detailed that it is slightly off-putting. It feels like everyone is always moving during cutscenes, for some reason it reminds me of Quake 2 where the models just shift and move and fluctuate around constantly due to the vertex animations.
>>

>>743737935
Yeah, I would count Arnold gunning down an entire station full of police officers as pretty edgy.

This is like saying Marvel is edgy because a lot of buildings get destroyed in the background which means surely thousands of people die all the time during the fights. It's disingenuous. We both know it's treated very lightly and in a semi cartoony way.

1995 gits doesn't shun from any nudity or violence and revels in it from an edgy point of view.
>>
>>743738071
threating hardcore violence lightly and cartoony is the definition of edgy. By your definition newground cartoons like pony.mov aren't edgy.
>>
>>743737941
It's because they largely seperated the animation from the voice acting. They asked some guys to do le quirky voices for all the NPCs and then the animators came up with "ideas" on how to make them move, and the animation is sort of amateurish in the first game in particular, where it is really well animated, but there's a lack of sense for how little time is passing between overtly notable gestures. 2 also does this a little bit, but they became better at having scenes with characters taking pauses and just talking over a table and things like that.
>>
>>743730749
It first diminished in popularity because the tweens who liked it grew "old" (>15) and realized they can pretend to be mature by hating it. Same with rock music.
Then before it could have a resurgence, as these retards were joining actual adult societe and being removed from the opinion sphere of video games... the internet happened and crystalized the "anti-edge" persona at it's core. Then came woke shit who were literally offended by edgy topics (the kind of people who get upset if you say kill yourself because suicide is "not a joke", etc).
Dunno if currently, since faggy woke shit is going out of style, there will be a resurgence. It's been teetering at the edge of mainstream. Arguably the urban horror crap (slender, scp, fnaf, backrooms) is edgy, and so is anime but they're not quite the same as the 2000s style.
>>
>>743738157
Okay I didn't realize marvel was the epitome of edginess then, sorry.
>>
>>743738215
does marvel even feature anything but punches and explosions? Again, literally first thing you see in every version of GITS is a guy being gunned down by makoto in gory-ous detail. It is an interesting question on what makes marvel different if they ever did that tho
>>
>>743738071
I don't watch comic book movies but one of the most common complaints years ago was how much collateral damage the superheroes cause in their fights with the villains. Even fucking DBZ has Goku say "LET'S GO TO AN UNPOPULATED AREA AND THEN I'LL FIGHT YOU!" a lot, because the good guys are supposed to not want ANYONE to get hurt.
>>
>>743735310
>>743735970
Millenials are the ones who created and loved extreme edgy shit the most you retarded slave.

>>
>>743738287
The distinction is about how the source material treats it. I mean technically bugs bunny and road runner burn, maim, murder and otherwise brutalize their victims but it's clearly in a cartoon way and not actually edgy.

That's also the case for marvel and to a lesser extent the whimsical version of gits. The 1995 version meanwhile has a shadow the hedgehog factor to it where it clearly wants to show you how "aloof" it is while animating the gore as gruesome as possible and "not caring" about it.

It's about what the directors/writers want to communicate to the audience. When people designed the Jak 2 cover and game with a frowning Jak they did that with the intent to be edgy/dark/cool. Marvel isn't trying to be edgy or dark by random people dying in the background and neither is the gits manga or terminator. It's lightweight action.

Shadow the hedgehog wants to show how badass and edgy he is "and has no problem killing anyone" with his gun in his hand. gits 1995 wants to clearly show as brutal as possible gore while communicating "hah, look how carelessly we displayed this extreme brutal violence, look how cool and aloof the major is and how brutal this world is, isn't this edgy?" That entire interplay between what the writers and directors are going for and trying to communicate to the audience IS what is edgy.

Linkin Park singing "crawling in my skiiin, these wounds they would not heaaal" while the MTV videoclip shows some 14 year old goth girl in highschool is also peak edgy because of what the writers want to communicate. Look how cool deep and edgy we are, I'm literally going to kill myself because my mom doesn't understand me!

I tried to explain it as much as I can but if you still can't pick it up then I give up.

I don't know how terminally online some of you guys are, but if you've ever seen the "olderbrothercore" trend, it's basically a bunch of preteens who, at this age, would be very edgy, but because edgy isn't in right now, they latch onto the 2000s culture and edginess of that time. Like they'll wear Jorts, drink mountain dew and talk about halo and shit.
>>
>>743731949
Not the same thing, they made edgy things because they were looking to sell more. They pad games with faggotry because Larry Fink pays for it but it has nothing to do with market preferences.
>>
>>743739014
Yes, however they don't adopt the edginess associated with the aesthetics actual edgy kids had.

They need to scream nigger on xbox live, talk about the power of darkness and how they crave the taste of blood and want to try out killing someone etc, preferably while having some knifes from the mall or other mall ninja shit.

you just solved OP's problem. Edgy got out of style because game companies no longer appeals to the market, but to investors to bail them out.

In Meta Quest games kids scream nigger all the time. Xbox Live is just censored today, it's not the kids fault

In my mind, 00s edginess was encapsulated by Invader Zim.

related: Destroy All Humans is a fun edgy game and the alien boss is voiced by Zim and has pretty much the same delivery of his lines as Zim does.

Didn't Tumblr co-opt that shit?

Yes, but fujoshits were some of the biggest edgelords of all.

I think there is a massive age gap ongoing in this thread and the younger generation doesn't know what the older generation means with "edginess". Invader zim isn't edgy by the way.

Edginess was this entire mindset where everyone was pretending like they were always mad, brooding and ready to snap and kill people because of how badass they were. This can be characters or newgrounds games about gore and killing but also how you acted online and IRL.
>>
>>743739596
Maybe then, sure, but now, just being sincere or mature will get you labled edgy by post ironic millennials with trolls remorse. Oh, you wrote a story with mature themes and angst? "EW DUDE THATS SO EDGY LOL SO CRINGE, YOU SOUND LIKE A SCHOOL SHOOTER LOOOOOL."
>>
>>743739596
>Invader Zim isn't edgy by the way
There was an entire episode about Zim harvesting the organs of children and replacing them with random objects. He filled himself with human organs in order to prove to a school nurse he was healthy, and at one point he vomits up some intestines before pulling them back into himself.

It has exactly the type of wanton cruelty and violence towards innocent random people that defines "edgy"

That's like saying Gravity Falls is mature because it deals with a supernatural evil triangle guy
>>
>>743739996
No, it's like saying Invader Zim is edgy because it is dark, cruel, and the main characters legitimately don't care about anyone else.

I haven't watched cartoons since I was a kid so I have clue what Gravity Falls is. I watched a single episode of Regular Show and it wasn't funny or edgy.

commercial edgy*

Edginess on the internet back then was obsessed with torturing people in flash games and shooting up schools with Pico, which would have much difficulty getting commercial releases. It wasn't really too long ago when Manhunt was being banned in stores for being a game ABOUT murdering people.
>>
>>743730749
>edginess
>jak anything ever
huh?
>>
>>743739596
I think there's a few different concepts that people muddy together. Dead baby South Park/early Newgrounds/4chan edgy wasn't the same as dark & brooding "I'm so misunderstood" crawling in my skin Hot Topic edgy, nor are either of them exactly the same as the earlier flaming skull Rat Fink grunge/punk edgy that was popular in the 90s but goes back to the 50s.
I think the most interesting distinction is that there's almost no overlap between the dark and gross-out elements, because one begs for attention and the other seeks to repel.
>>
>>743730749
It's kind of like how weed stopped being counterculture the instant it became legalized. It's a concept that got overexposed and lost its shock value, which lead to it being abandoned to impressionable retard kids who all fancied themselves as anime furry versions of Alex DeLarge.
>>
Did the explosion in frequency of mass shootings make edginess less culturally acceptable? Or did it simply become a stale social trend?
>>
>>743741054
It's like when your parents like the same thing you do, you stop liking it because now it's seen as less cool.
>>
>>743739596
This is an extremely specific part of what "edgy" actually covers.
>>
>>743741278
Columbine changed everything.

Previously cool things were now taboo.

Playing FPS was instantly considered edgy
Wearing trench coats were instantly considered edgy
talking about guns or explosives were instantly considered edgy
>>
>>743740319
It's because of the tone shift from more PEGI +7 to PEGI +12 territory. This game wouldn't be labeled like this if it wasn't for the first game's environments being more like Crash Bandicoot.
>>
>>743730749
I never understood those threads. Do goyim really think that if something is popular or unpopular is decided by "the will of the people"??

Everything is decided higher up, and the trends are just propaganda of what you are told to think.
>Why did edginess go out of style?
It was forced into media as a propaganda.
And then it was forced out of the media as a propaganda.

It's really that simple. In 2002 you devs were told that they cant release the game unless Jak has a gun and Kira has huge tits. And in 2027 devs are told they cant remaster the game unless Kira has no tits at all, and Jak is pathetic and doesnt know how to wield a gun.

Which is exactly what happened to Ratchet btw.

The hardcore themes were only shoved into the mainstream to distract society. And now that society is acceptant of those themes, they are trying to disctract it again by banning it all.
>>
>>743730848
Why did this breed of man die out…?
>>
>>743742947
Yep. Thanks to Obama and Gamergate/Comicsgate, you aren't allowed to get market funding for a game that doesn't have Kira as a brown fat woman, Jak as a dorky MCU quip numbskull that puts Daxter to shame, and big bad government as the bad guys.

Edginess was already culturally unacceptable before school shootings. Shithead teens were all put under a microscope afterwards, and anything that they had previously laid a finger on was subject to immense scrutiny, especially violent vidya and their music subcultures.
>>
>>743734983
Jak 2 was such a massive improvement over the incredibly generic slop that was Precursor Legacy.
>>
>>743742947
No one has ever been forced to put big tits into a game. The number of times they've been forced to censor them, on the other hand, is too high to count. You're full of shit and you know it.
>>
>>743743314
It's funny and true because at the time of release, 3D collectathons were old news and GTA-like open worlds were exciting.

Now to modern people, since 3D collectathons died but GTA-like game design has engulfed every game of every genre, Jak 1 seems like the unique one while 2 feels like it is derivative.
>>
>>743742947
Something glossed over when comparing it to the present is that a lot of 90s edginess was aimed at breaking the old social norms: overcoming the resistance to nigger and fag shit by calling you out of touch or a pussy if you don't like it, and calling you a real man if you don't got a problem with it. Now that that ground has been won, it's consolidated by appealing to the complete opposite instincts: you're expected to cry like a bitch if anyone goes outside the new norm.

This is pretty much it. Everyone is afraid of being judged rather than catering to their niche fandom or subgroup or even just putting out something they love in favor of hiding under a veil of irony and insincerity. Its why we live in this MCU infused quipfest media world now.

Jak 1 had good gameplay but the setting and Jak himself was THE most cliché, straight-out-of-the-cereal-box thing possible. It had 0 identity besides Daxter, and selling Jak II in the same setting would have flopped. The Playstation audience was growing out of the wacky mascot era.
>>

Not quite true.

"Normal" is now whatever most celebrities and influencers say or do.
People who act weird but in a way that is accepted by celebrities and influencers are not mocked or called-out for not being normal, they are actively celebrated and promoted.

The actual normal human beings, who despise excess and think someone being eccentric must have talent/skill to excuse it, are being demonized though. Having normal instincts or reactions is frowned upon, such as talking to women you find attractive and then asking her out.

It's so popular because irony shields you from any sort of criticism whatsoever. If you make an animation or short film or game that's ironic, well then you can never say it's bad because they can just claim that's the point. If you make a story with a mature narrative, that doesn't make any jokes and takes itself seriously, well then you're inviting people in to mock what you truly feel and believe in.

Irony poisoning. This board suffers from it as well.
Also edginess was turned into the "edgyboy" stereotype where you are just basically a poltard and rude to everyone before saying "just a joke bro". People didn't wanna really be considered edgy unless they were said edgyboys.

I wish cool and fun edge was still a thing, but now /v/ considers it cringe.

>which is the real horror
Section 9 act like edgy adolescents from the 80s dropping cherry bombs in toilets, casually bantering by shitting on each other, pranking their boss who looks like a newspaper comic strip depiction of an old man. It's scary that the writers wanted them to act 1:1 with the manga when the anime shows how juvenile it really was even at the time when it came out. There's a reason 1995 and SAC held global appeal for decades while the manga is and will forever be niche.
