Do you think a fanwork (fangame or mod) can be on the same level as the original game, or even surpass it? Are there any examples of this? Or at least fangame/mods that did one thing better than the original? be it gameplay, music, story or art direction.
Well, nothing is saying technically that it can't surpass it right? I don't think for instance that yellow surpassed the original game, but it did something different and evoked some really strong emotions, and in places had some better fights.
>>744037785absolute kino
>>744038340that fucking flowey thing kills me every time.
>>744037785I can think of two examples. The original Antibirth mod completed destroyed the DLC of the binding of isaac that came shortly after the mod.The secret boss fight of the Friendless mod mogs the mad cat secret boss that Tricky Tony released but at least it is not as bad as the binding of isaac example
>>744037785Usually they aren't, unless the dev really failed, but fanworks are a perfect way to reuse the content which was previously unused or cut from the game. Fan things are usually better at the small things and developing existing threads while bad at building the "frame" of the game.
>>744037785I still cant believe how good UTYs music is even when held in comparison to the original. it's genuinely insane to me. I expected it to be shit, but one of the things that made me finally give the game a try was getting a recommendation for one of it's tracks and being blown away.
>>744038515I really should try some of the mods that exist for isaac. it's something that feels for some reason like it shouldn't have fan mods, but I remember seeing one for a fanmade boss about fear of being seen or something like that.
Axis is a miracle of the universe. A high caliber being that makes his section of the game better.
>>744038584If I remember correctly it's from the Fiend Folio modThat mod makes Isaac harder because of all the new enemies and bosses's patterns that you need to get used to but it's 100% worth it
>>744037785
>>744038893>Fiend Folio modthat sounds very familiar. I never checked it out myself because I heard "fiend folio" used as a joke for a couple years a ways back, but I didn't know if that was because the mod was bad, or if it was because of some inside joke.
>>744038515>The original Antibirth mod completed destroyed the DLC of the binding of isaac that came shortly after the mod.Antibirth is an exception among exception, the mod was so good that the dev team got hired for the original game and a lot of the content from the mod became part of the game in the last DLC
>>744037785Enderal probably had better questlines than Skyrim
>>744038957Does it really count as a fanwork if it was made to mock the original? Otherwise I agree, Snoot Game is pretty funny
>>744037785https://www.moddb.com/mods/minervaValve hired this guy. Pretty much the apex of boomer shooter level design.
>>744037785I consider AM2R to be the ultimate Metroid 2.Black Mesa is arguably superior to Half Life 1 (sans the retarded music choices).Sonic Mania was originally a fangame and Taxman's Sonic CD is the ultimate Sonic CD.Megachud is a better megaman than Mighty Number 9.
Fanmods don't really impress me much. Most of the actual hard work was already done, so waltzing in and "improving" it isn't really much to be proud of. I'm not saying a mod can't objectively improve a game, but you don't get to act smug when 99% of the work was already done.Fangames are fine, though at that point you should just make your own game.
Yeah pokemon romhacks have surpassed the originals by a fair bit even the mediocre fangames.
FTL multiverse is a huge improvement
Undertale Futility had the POTENTIAL to be better than Undertale, so much potential...
I'm really happy about the yellow we ended up getting. it's got some failings of fanworks, but holy shit seeing the takes for fan content some of the fandom has, it really could have been so very much worse. It could have been something that none of us would want to even think about.>>744039164AM2R looks really good, though I saw a video of a fight that seemed to take WAY too long, though I'm not sure if it was on a special difficulty, or something like that.>Black Mesa is arguably superior to Half Life i'm skeptical, HL1 is already (in my opinion) better than HL2

>>744039219I disagree, specially when the creators haven't fully explored the potential of the setting the fangame takes place in (and has no plans to)>>744039051Snoot Game is a weird case since it is a fangame that came out before the actual game release, so much people think it is the origin point of the cast
i need more opinions on which way i should go with this for DRY2's new UI.right now i like the name separated + chronologically ordered one the most.
>>744039520>Snoot Game is a weird case since it is a fangame that came out before the actual game release, so much people think it is the origin point of the castwell I think the thing he's pointing out is, it's not really a "fan" work because they weren't exactly fans of what GBVH was going to be.
>>744039560and using the full character bar for ordered/aligned reactions.

>>744039560>>744039628do aligned with the char names, so closer to the last one from the 2nd pic
>>744039705I'm not arguing for or against that, I'm just saying it's no longer a "fan game" if the person never liked the game or series in the first place is it?Like even a fangame for DR from someone who liked it and now hates it still could be a fangame right?
>>744039402>well it WAS the game with the ABSOLUTE FASTEST DEV rivaling EVEN DRYANON after all.Maybe he stopped working on it because he didn't want the other devs to feel bad once his project completely overshadowed all the others>Surely that design doc will show up any day now.Be patient, its only been a... month? since it got announced, must be one hell of a doc.
>>744039805a fanwork by definition is just a work based on an existing IP you don't own, you don't really need to be a fan to make a fangame, but most fangames are made by fans of a series
>>744039878Would be it okay to add cameos for dead fangames (visually not exactly the same) into your fangame, or that would be too much trouble?
>>744037785>Do you think a fanwork (fangame or mod) can be on the same level as the original game, or even surpass it? Are there any examples of this?Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers is unironically the single best racing game I've ever played and I love it to death
>>744039973it is better to avoid dealing with reddit/twitter freaks as much as possible, adding cameos is asking them to check and if they disagree it WILL cause drama
>>744039973>Would be it okay to add cameos for dead fangames (visually not exactly the same) into your fangame, or that would be too much trouble?Reminds me of that conversation of the "bar of broken heroes/dreams" a place full of characters from dead fangames, I'm certain it would bring a ton of drama because the UT fandom is just that volatile, I still think it would be a cool idea to give these characters a second chance
>>744040006I tried that and got filtered by the tutorialwhy does a racing game need to many mechanics
Some of those mario kaizo mods were legitimately mpre fun than the original games. Wonder how many hacks are only superior because they dont have to target the lowest skill user base. Like why even mid pokemon romhacks are more dun since not every single fight is just a cakewalk
>>744037785Call of Chernobyl basically made the entire stalker series obsolete. It even mogs stalker 2.
>>744040136It's not as complicated as you think, the tutorial is just presented kinda poorly because it was supposed to be the setup for a weird racing/platformer hybrid singleplayer that never got finished. If you haven't played since 2.4 you should give it a shot again.
>>744037785Yes, they taste good.
>>744040242Feels like some games just by accident or by design made it an excellent sandbox for future mods to really expand. Morrowind and starsector come to mind. Not sure if that shouldnt just be to the original game's merit
CoC Xianxia. Still somehow getting updates
>>744040047>it is better to avoid dealing with reddit/twitter freaks as much as possibleThis is what got me worried about Undertale Wildfire, they got most of their team from twitter
>>744040646well, they've been dead silent for a while now so it may have already fallen to shit.
>>744037785There are loads of mods for games like thief, quake, doom that absolutely BTFO the commercial content. I'm not even shitting on the base games, but for these older games modders have had decades to practice and work on maps and whatnot, it's not surprising that they get really good at it. I do think it gets rarer the more modern games get since the barrier to entry gets higher. A lot of mods for modern games tend to just be bug fixes, balance changes, and QoL, which even when they're "better" than the vanilla game I don't think I really give much credit to the modders for doing anything novel.
>>744039805I'm pretty sure they really did love snoot girl though.
>>744040773>I do think it gets rarer the more modern games get since the barrier to entry gets higher.huh, I feel like the barrier is lower than ever if anything and that's why there's a lot of lower quality content. It's easier than ever to learn how to work with stuff so even some people who maybe shouldn't have been allowed on the computer try
more than that, fanworks also extend the feeling when you've got a game that really meant something to you. Playing morrowind then modding it after that, or obsessing over ut then letting myself get into fics (which admittedly a lot of are really bad but still), and then after that getting into UTYthen getting into fics and mods of that.
>>744040703Remember to never recruit from Twitter
>>744041618honestly probably a good lesson for any project, big or small. These people are so terribly disconnected from reality that it makes posters here look like social savants.
Will they surpass Deltarune? Can the Unrelated guys do the impossible? Could they become the next Snoot game?
>>744041618>>744041713I think you can do it, but only if the entire team comes from Twitter, including yourself.
>>744041618Where to recruit from then?
>>744041762literally naming her "Dike" does not evoke much confidence. >crowley>that goatI don't know, writing with your dick can be good if you're making something meant to be enjoyed by your dick exclusively, but I have a feeling that this isn't going to be much to look at.I'd prefer to see some of the writing quality and see what we're working with.

>>744041956Put up flyers
>>744042056>The image that killed an entire audiences interestI still played Cooking With Kindness, it was alright but that image made me see a lot of the dialogue and interactions in a different light
>>744042218Wasn't there a lot of drama behind the scenes?I'd avoid getting a team made of randoms online and only use that as a last case scenario
>>744042295>it was alright but that image made me see a lot of the dialogue and interactions in a different lightI still intend to give it a play, but I can't imagine not having that image shift your perspective on it a little. It makes some of the lines that I saw people share from it come across a little more "ah, it's these kind of devs."
>>744042297I don't know about the drama, but I'd put more trust on the average anon than in the average terminally online twitter user
>>744042041>To be fair they did change her surnamewell, that IS good, but still I don't have high expectations. we'll see what we get when there's some actual writing to chew on.>>744042297nta but while I don't know about what drama there was or wasn't with snoot game, I know there's a good number of games that started here that seemed to come to fruition drama free.Pizza tower comes to mind and that's shocking because one of the musicians was a tranny. I think it helped that PTG was very drama averse, going out of his way to not engage with it, even ignoring it when he opened his discord up to the public and making the smart decision to end his discord when he saw what that community was becoming.. >>744042394>It makes some of the lines that I saw people share from it come across a little more "ah, it's these kind of devs."On top the of my head I remember a reference to ACAB, some joke about not assuming genders, a character that eat something that made them look more like a cat and got happy because you mistook them for a cat, and the shark dude making a reference to him being a girl in the pastThere's probably more stuff that I don't remember.
Do you think Castle Town was underutilized in DR? Would you want something more to be added to it, or you didn't care for Castle Town at all? Should DR fangames include their own Castle Town?
>>744042686>joke about not assuming gendersIt's crazy that Toby did something similar. Chapter 5 is truly like a fangame, huh?
>>744042568someanon was using it as a hitlist
>>744037785I wound up liking Rock 'n Roll more than some of the official MM games. Most of the castle stages were great.
>>744039805anons liked the characters and setting, just not the tranny writing and tranny characterization that the official game ended up with
>>744042720>Do you think Castle Town was underutilized in DR?yes, we get chapters where we don't really get good access to it and it feels lame when that happens honestly. Also castle funk is not as good a theme as "my castle town.">Should DR fangames include their own Castle Town?I like the way the dark jail plays into the justice soul dealing with a completely different kind of "castle town." It's kind of sad to me sometimes that we're encouraged not to arrest "innocents" and bring them there because I do want to see what they say in the dark jail but I don't want to make coles life any harder.
>>744042720I think Chapter 5 castle town already has a lot of stuff for a hub area, you got minigames, extra interactions, challenge battles, a crafting station, a shop, a jukebox, I'm not sure what else could be added
>>744042720I didn't care for it besides item crafting and Dojo, I wouldn't mind if it just expanded these two

>>744042910Being gay and lame was probably the main priority when writing that joke
>>744043040But the thing is, something being gay doesn't automatically make it lame. Why do these people have to bundle the two so agressively. What is the obsession with lameness, with limp wristed pathetic nonsense.

>>744043154>And the Warden being absolutely pissed about it but not being able to really do anything to stop itHonestly sounds hilarious. AM2R is probably the only example one can truly say a fangame surpassed the output of that franchise, like between AM2R and Samus Returns, AM2R clears it completely. This is not to say SR is a bad game, but moreso that AM2R put a very high bar to clear, SR failed to clear it but Dread definitely did, which shows MercuryStream are no slouches at making Metroid work.
>>744043143Anon... Limp wristed literally means effeminate and gay...

>>744043494I would put AM2R on equal levels with Super Metroid, never above it but pretty fucking damn close, AM2R is like the ultimate GBA-era metroid game, it takes the smoothness of Zero Mission with the action of Fusion and give it a fun overworld to explore, AM2R may be linear and not as super duper open as Super is (Exploits or not), but AM2R's overworld is a fun time.
>>744043582>Twitter users don't like manly thingsthen they are twisted mockeries of humanity. >enjoy your characters wearing fetish gear and pride flags in official poststhanks I hate it. I guess this is why I could tolerate and appreciate the writing of toby's games previously. Gay characters seemed to be actual characters (outside of when the romance was actively happening), so it didn't feel like I was going through an old era tumblr users wank off session.
