Just put in the work to make a good storefront that doesn't need accountslop, doesn't need a launcher, has no DRM and honors international consumer protections like refunds and used license sales.
Steam is a natural monopoly, no one wants to put up with a second worse Steam insisting on yet another account, launcher and DRM, it needs to be something better.

Why are monopolies bad?

And yet Steam is the only store that actually bothers providing a good service to both consumers and developers. Crazy.

A monopoly of what?... good customer service?

As opposed to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, that force you to rebuy games, only to take them away from you every generation, and then rebuy them again?

Monopolies go out of their way to destroy competition. Steam doesn't do this, their competition doesn't need help destroying themselves.

Monopoly status only matters when it is obtained due to anti-competition practices. Steam doesn't do that. Not that they would need to anyway with how their competition acts

>>
>>744711228
More like competition is so bad they would rather accuse Steam of being a monopoly than actually try to improve because they just want Steam's success without doing all the effort Steam does to achieve it.
>>
Monopolies aren't bad if they benefit the customer. Steam have a Monopoly for a reason they offer a much better service than anybody else in the space. The savings from steam sales alone justifies the Monopoly.

Its the equivalent of Google with the other search engines they are so far ahead of everyone else so they have a Monopoly that benefits the users.
>>
>>744709265
Can you really call it a monopoly when there are plenty of alternatives, but most people simply don't want to use those?
>>
The people who defend steam's monopoly are the same people who doesn't care about chinese monopoly in rare earth and solar panel. They always act like
>it's still cheap and doesn't affect me, therefore it's fine
>>
>>744709265
Monopoly implies either:
The literal definition, which doesn’t apply to Steam because they don’t have the requisite market share
Them being both large and using monopolistic tactics to deliberately suppress others, which doesn’t apply to Steam because they don’t engage in practises that sidestep the customer (buying exclusivity, loss leading, inorganic disruption of other platforms, etc)

A monopoly is what you have on consoles, since you can only get games from the console vendor, especially once they go full digital and you can't even get used discs.
>>
>>744709265
It's not a monopoly.
Not even close. For steam to be a monopoly, there would have to be no Epic Store. There would have to be no Consoles. There would have to be no sites that sell you game keys on other platforms.
It's not a monopoly.
>>
>>744711506
Most people don't "defend" so much as retort that nobody else is doing shit to deserve business outside of GOG's niche. You want to be top dog, make a better service than steam. Give me reasons to use you. Fuck, give me consistantly lower prices.
You don't deserve my money, my data, my traffic, or even my attention. You do things to earn this from me. If you can't and won't try, fuck off, I'll stay with steam.

Some industries function better or function at all with natural monopolies. Steam is a one stop shop for all the games, its convenience increases with every game that becomes available to Steam rather than exclusive to somewhere else. Twitterx's primary value to its users IS the fact that it is an effective monopoly; an online town square for communication between as many people as possible obviously benefits its users the more it encompasses everybody.

Why do jews always have to act so cartoonishly evil? Does it horrify them that there is one corner in the world that is outside their influence. Do they start to hiss at the mere mention of the word "3rd space"? I guess the answer is yes because any place people can retreat to will grow over time simply because it exists as an alternative and people are aware of it.This then begs the next question: Why do they insist on acting in such a way that people want to leave their proverbial plantations in the first place? Past a certain point, any active effort and resources spent on oppressing people can be used to please them and a happy/grateful goy is just as cooperative as one who is whipped into submission. So why? Are they truly so cartoonishly evil that they need to feed on other people's misery because they are so ugly and dysgenic themselves? So much misery over lateral cartilage shape.

One word. Schizophrenia. They have an absurdly high genetic predisposition for it from all the inbreeding they did in the desert several millennia ago, as is common for resource scarce environments. That's not even a baseless accusation either, it's a publicly available fact, it's a point of concern in israel as I understand it, has charity foundations set up for research and everything. So basically all the worst behaviors of schizophrenia that you can imagine are endemic to their race, combined with their religious scripture and culture, taught from birth and collectively reinforced, and you come out with a people that incite campaigns of expulsion and genocide against them every hundred years or so.

When you give in to the delusions of grandeur, you start to think you're better than everyone else, and when you think that, you see nothing wrong with cheating and abusing them. The difference for them from your typical schizophrenic is that they have a high degree of ingroup preference and a lot of financial power because europe unwisely let jews do their banking because it was illegal for christians to do usury, for reasons we are now suffering.

>>
>>744717879
You do realize that even when you bought physical copies, you were only buying the license to play that which was put on the disc. You own the disc, sure, you own the manual and all the charming printed paper and plastic, sure. But you never owned the game, only the license to install and play it.
I can't say I don't miss the big box era, but to say you ever owned the games is retarded.
You can burn a cd or dvd with your game if you please, and with GoG you certainly can, for the most part.
Depending on the privileges the dev/publisher on Steam gives the licensee/player, you can do the same, but GoG still has the greatest advantage in that regard

Buying games on steam is means of paying for those games and supporting a platform that is still finding ways to improve 20 years later and is at the point where they're fighting to liberate computing as a whole
If it ever fails then piracy will rule again

Now tell me what the other storefronts charge :)
Consider also that you can - and some games do this with success - pay Steam the one-time $100 fee to put your game on Steam, and then not sell it on Steam; sell it on your own site to be activated on Steam. The most common example of this is Vintage Story.

You can extract the authenticator key seed and technically add it to KeepassXC or Aegis, but the process is extremely cumbersome/tech savvy. I personally have nothing against any of these things, except the AI slop, but there is the AI disclaimer, at least.
But you can play certain games offline and without the launcher, but these are things that depend on the dev/publisher. So a small fraction can be played drm free, but at that point those games are probably already ones you have on GoG, then there are a much larger amount of games you can play offline, and a few faggot games that are always online.
At the end of the day this is entirely on the dev/publisher, and not so much Steam for allowing the "feature"
Only two things about Steam has ever pissed me off, switching the two factor thing to exclusively be a phoneapp, and the blue-hued redesign over the green grey

Because despite what they say, they have no problems with monopolies. The problem they have is that they aren't the monopoly.
>>
The functional criteria for a monopoly is not controlling the entire market. it is the ability to set out of equilibrium prices and not be affected by cheaper competitors. The "price" Valve sets is the 30% fee they charge to developers. They maintain this fee above what the market equilibrium should be, because they have that much control of their market.

In other words, the steamie rebuttle that always gets used, "30% fee is the industry standard" is exactly the kind of language that will lose you an anti-trust case. "industry standard" is a euphemism for anti-competitive. This is why Valve is completely avoiding that type of language in their on going anti-trust cases.

also remember, it is ok when valve does it.
>>
>>744709265

Y'know I would buy from other stores (besides GOG and occasionally itch) if they didn't have their games tied to a shitty bloatware launcher. Like 10 years ago I had so many fucking launchers for everything. I only tolerate one, otherwise just sell me the .exe at a good price and I will give you my money.

lol

you want to know what a monopoly is?
every single fucking console, you can't get your games without going through the console corpo and passing their DRM checks
>>
>>744725317
It's not just that game, they poached games that had promised Steam release from Kickstarter and they also took Rocket League off Steam too. And Fallguys I think? I don't play that crap.
All this is just really bad PR no matter how you slice it. The only way that'd work out good for them is if they convinced the users that they were there to make everything better, but their messaging was exclusively aimed at pleasing publishers and developers so they didn't even try.

>The "price" Valve sets is the 30% fee they charge to developers. They maintain this fee above what the market equilibrium should be
30% is the market norm, and was in place before Steam's 30% cut. As a matter of fact, brick and mortar stores selling physical copies took heftier cuts than even Steam, which was a major contributing factor to indie and AA developers abandoning physical stores to sell on Steam instead.

In addition, unlike other digital distributors, Steam lowers the cut it takes the more a game sells, down to 20%.
>>
>>744729935
I'm just giving you the perspective of how these things actually get decided in real courts. Your feelings of loyalty to a software DRM platform aren't really relevant.

This is correct as a description of how the market functions in practice, but if you made this argument in an anti-trust or anti-competitive case you would be guaranteeing you will lose. Luckily valves lawyers are much smarter than you.
>>
>>744730317
The irony of this post is that if Valve took a lower cut the argument that they were a monopoly would be easier to make as other stores wouldn't be able to match it and still make enough money to function.

They would lose if the industry standard was something they themselves set, but it wasn't, and as I said was substantially lower than the cuts physical stores took. They don't need whatever laymen babble language semantics to cover their asses you think they need, they just need to bring up distributor history. This has in fact been done before as well, a few years back. Steam isn't a monopoly, they're not anything approaching a monopoly, and they do not engage in any kind of anti-trust practices. Even by the considerations of legal laymen such as yourself, what you consider anti-trust behavior has already been deemed not to be back in the 90s when Microsoft was eradicating the tech industry while the USG looked the other way.

They were given a slap on the wrist, and not broken up for their trouble. Valve would have to be doing a lot worse than Microsoft was doing in the 90s to get hit with anti-trust, even Google didn't get the slap down over essentially controlling browsers and search engines simply because they fund Firefox. Nothing will happen to Valve, they just need to do what they're currently doing, which is nothing.

Valve is not perfect and they're definitely greedy and have made bad choices and decisions in the past but as PC gamers they're the best option. If we really wanted to protest we could demand valve removed all drm. I take a hybrid stance. I'm not going to stop buying from them but I'm also not going to trust them fully. >>
>>744731920
>If we really wanted to protest we could demand valve removed all drm.
I doubt this. The devs would kick up a massive fucking stink about Valve not doing their due diligence to protect their games from piracy. GoG states up front that they don't do DRM so they get a much smaller library of games nobody expects to make a decent chunk of change from (hence why their market niche was old games patched to run on modern computers).

Right now Steam's weak as shit DRM is the perfect middle ground. Its easy as fuck to bypass if you care about DRM-free games but its also a placebo for retarded devs.

Steam is an anomaly. Nearly every other company that achieves a monopoly immediately becomes corrupt and tries to take advantage of it to exploit consumers.

Steam is the exception because it's founder happens to have some integrity and had the foresight not to become a publicly traded company.

I hate to borrow Tendie terminology but the Steam Derangement is a real phenomena at this point. Steam and Valve by proxy are far from the biggest evils of the industry. You see this shit in consolewar threads but atleast there its a somewhat even number of posters in favor/against whatever console is the topic. But in these threads its like 1-2 posters fighting the entire fucking thread and pretending they are moral crusaders of truth. Its fucking weird like they were the victim of an irl NTR doujin where the fat ugly bastard Gaben stole their waifu and now have a permanent vendetta.
>>
How is it a monopoly? Literally every company out there has their own store and launcher.
>>
>>744732547
It's worse.
Steam lives off the money they get from the consumers because they're note a publicly traded company, so "voting with the wallet" works on em.
Public companies in general have by law to obey the shareholders, and the shareholders are aiming at explosive stock value gains, even if this means killing the company in the process.
>>
>>744732568

Valve doesnt do this, the only price Valve demands is for free Steam keys (the ones the dev can print an inifinite amount of while giving Valve 0 dollars). This is completely fine as you cant just demand to use all of Valves infrastructure for free.
Devs can sell their games on other platforms for cheaper (as long as those are not Steam keys and dont use Steam) or for whatever price if it is a Steam key and Valve was BOUGHT from Valve.

Why do you insist on constantly lying about everything Timmy? If you spent half as much on having feature parity with Steam as you do on hiring shills and exclusives you would actually stand a chance at competing.
But no, shell out hundreds of millions for exclusives or timed exclusives instead of paying some software dev to add in a forum and user reviews.
