>>
things outside of gaming =/= going outside
>>
>>744878524
A) having literary and life references to better connect with and feel resonance from a game’s themes and gameplay. For example - I have just finished reading Pincher Martin by William Golding, now I have a much deeper appreciation for ghosts and ghost characters, as well as their motivations and what type of ghost the game is describing. I work a job, I like to notice the design and implications of workplaces in games - often they are deliberately designed with meaning.
B) too self-referential. You play Metal Gear Solid and clap when they reference the other games and say then lines, but you’ll never understand what adults in the60s-80s were thinking and what forces each character and faction are meant to represent, and what cultural or political movement is being discussed and why. It will mean so much less to you because its all just fake video game

>>
>>744879447
I appreciate a honest post. But in no way does that explain why my own personal ability to truly engage with a game is and/or will fade. One's experience with a game can be enriched, but lacking these things does not take away anything from the games ability to entertain or engage you.
>>
>play games as a kid with zero real life experience
>fully engaged
>get real life experience and barely play games anymore

>>
>>744879576
> One's experience with a game can be enriched, but lacking these things does not take away anything from the games ability to entertain or engage you.
Unenriched means less engaged, disengagement is not entertainment. I think you know that, and you know there is something out there in the world you could experience that makes everything you love about video games even better
>>
>>744879528
And he killed communists? Fucking. Based.

Imagine writing a novel that focused on human relationships despite never actually talking to people. All the dialog would come off as extremely robotic because your only experience would be through things you read or watched. You would have zero personal experience. You should be able to see how this relates to what Itoi was saying.

No, because you're not making a fair comparison. We're not talking about me writing a novel. We're talking about me playing a game. If anything, I'd be less engaged as games are not acurrate representations of real life conversations. Neither are movies.

The better quote would be, if you want to better engage with life, you should be playing less video games. That has substance.

Read books, go outside, do whatever, and that gives you a breath of fresh air. Then you can come back and appreciate games with new insight, alongside a rested mind.

What experience do you think you don’t have as a child? You’ve experienced movement, jumping athleticism colors, objects, space time, goals, currency. All these things were necessary for the game to mean anything to you, and there’s a reason why babies aren’t playing metal gear solid and instead only seem to enjoy bouncing colors on a screen - because they have experience with bouncing colors but not military operations

Hey guys I know you think he said ‘you personally, for playing video games, are a loser who has no experience and has done nothing’, but if you look closely, you’ll notice he didn’t
>>
>>744881303
So how many years left? 6-7?

>>744881198
Here's actual practical advice. Get term life insurance from New York Life. For about $45 a month she gets 200k at least if you die in the next 25 years. The numbers will vary based on you but will be close to that. It is a literal no brainer.

Who said anything about faded? There is some experience somewhere that would make you enjoy some game more. That is all all all
>>
>>744875595
while this is true for any hobby I stopped playing video games a loooong time ago and life didn't make me want to engage with games anymore. Video games are so bad. Browsing /v/ every now and then is more entertaining

>anon gets angry and defensive about how it's unnecessary
>another time advise anon to take care of his health, go to the gym
>watch anon argue being fat and unathletic is better because you're less likely to be drafted
You're just slothful faggots.

Gonna tally the thread minus the same fags. Seems more people disengage from games the more they engage with life.

I declare the quote trash and declare myself the winner.

I think my biggest regret it was not going to Olive Garden last tuesday. I was not on my A game for Counter-Strike

Yes, I knew what he meant. But it's not what he said. He tried to sound profound and ended up saying something that actually had no substance. I hate when people do that shit

Nigga this is the dude who made Earthbound. He knows what he's talking about.

He's right. Consuming only one type of media makes you bad at creating and enjoying it. It makes everything derivative. Enjoy other hobbies, including physical and outdoors hobbies.

Mother isn't even good in any way whatsoever

I remember renting it and feeling actually offended at the presentation

I think this quote has a point, but is mostly used by people trying to justify the prevalence of people who don't really know video games but still have power over video games.
>but that's a good thing, those nasty gamers just want to remake their favorite game
And? What's so bad about remaking something someone loves for actual reasons rather than remaking the most successful entry in the franchise? The idea that anyone who actually fucking likes games would be worse for game dev than someone who doesn't is mostly pushed by the companies that genuinely do hate "gamers".
>>
>>744882687
Playing videogames is not a hobby.
>>
>>744876381
Having a life outside of video games

"Creative incest" is a very real problem and it's propagated by the retards you see on 4chan who think if your work is not 100% original it "doesn't count", and propagated by corporate suits who have no fucking idea how to continue a work without self-reference like Star Wars

If you don't read a lot of fantasy you're not going to write interesting fantasy because you're going to be starstruck by entry-level shit, this kind of problem (a criticism I remember being leveled at Harry Potter when it was a fresh series, J.K. Rowling's unfamiliarity with both magical fantasy and boarding-house fiction led to an uninspired blend of both)
>>
>>744881761
Truthfully I just don't like or care about anything that's not games. I just don't enjoy anything about real life whatsoever. It's not as if I can force myself to enjoy other things.

This is a quote for insufferable pseudo intellectuals on xitter. The Japanese love to give out those dogshit quotes that almost always appeals to normalfag superiority when normalfags don't give a shit about hobbies in general now. The anime or train otaku is infinitely better than the average retard that plays his shitty TikTok videos on full volume in public
>>
>>744883248
It sounds to me like you're advocating for creators to spread out within their genre of their medium and look at what people are already doing. Isn't that kind of the opposite of the quote? And definitely the opposite of most people who would agree with the quote? And by extension, an agreement that anyone who wants to make games should be knowledgeable about the type of game they want to make first?
>>
>>744883578
God, no, reading comprehension. Pull from things that aren't video games when making video games.

>a fantasy author should read fantasy before they write
>a video game dev should ABSOLUTELY NOT play video games before they develop
Make it make sense
>>
>>744883248
It really feels like a matter of balance. It’s good to know the medium or genre you are working with, but it’s also bad if you are so much in love with the cliches of the genre or medium that you only regurgitate them up instead of creating something actually new. I guess that the ideal game designer should have both love for the medium, but also great amount of curiosity towards world in general to tap some outside-the-box ideas from.

Genre-savviness is important too but you're clearly not listening. Go read Dune and tell me what might have been an influence on it.

then what is it
>>
>>744884167
People overemphasize the value of the stuff you get from outside of games because most people who have the motive to be game developers already love games and don't need to be convinced to play them.
Or at least that's the theory. In practice, I think that's bullshit, and most devs need to be convinced to actually play video games.

>genre savviness is important
MEDIUM savviness is important in video games. That's what I'm saying. We've gotten stuck in place mechanically because we have a generation of developers who haven't played enough video games making games for a generation of players who mostly don't give a shit about video games.
>but all the classic devs who made innovation didn't play video games
Zelda 1's gameplay was based on fucking Ultima. Miyamoto didn't pull top down dungeon crawling gameplay out of his memories of exploring caves as a child. He saw mechanics in another game and made a game that used similar mechanics to express how an experience in his real life made him feel.
>read dune

>>
>>744875595
I think there's some truth to it and you see it in modern western writing in general, not just in video games. Writers back in the day usually did a lot of shit in their lives and were much better at making believable and serious worlds. Now every writer is some nepo baby hired straight out of the same couple leftist colleges who grew up in gated communities. Their only life experience is consuming the media they end up working in. As a result, their world building always feels fake, edgeless and retarded and their characters are unlikeable to anyone who isn't a sheltered college leftoid.

Hyperbole? Anon, have you seen the people who post this quote? 99.99% of them hate gaming as a whole and wish gamers would do ANYTHING else. They don't actually want gamers to enjoy games or make better ones, they want to feel good about themselves for not enjoying games.
