Gamers seem to really hate the Chosen One trope as if they don’t fantasize about being the prophesized hero of legend, whos presence compels the entire world to gravitate towards him.

The Chosen One trope is boring. I prefer to be a nobody who made it with grit and a song in my heart.

>>

>>
>>745862459
eh, that's still just the chosen one at the end of the day. it CAN work if you spin it as the protag definitely not being the chosen one but just forcing their way in through sheer grit, though.
or i guess you could also do it akin to dark souls where "the chosen one" is just whatever dipshit happens to pull it off first.
>>
>>745862459
Because then they'd just be the Chosen One. Most stories have the Chosen One not know that they are......the Chosen One. So having both is playing the Chosen One trope straight.
>>
If you already know you are meant for greatness, why should I or anyone else be surprised or amazed by such exploits? It's like betting on a race you already rigged and then acting like winning is still an accomplishment or something worth praising or being excited over. You are just giving yourself a fantasy participation trophy + cheat codes or uber rich parents who try to buy your success.

>>

No, Anakin was made by the Force to bring balance to it. Like, it actually knocked up his mom so he had a mission before he was even born.

Naruto is the reincarnation of the son of Ninja Jesus, had Kurama in him when he was a baby, and was the son of Minato, one of the strongest ninjas
The only person who is more chosen than him, is his daughter
>>
>>745863945
Luffy is the most recent of those chosen ones. The entire OP fandom duped themselves into thinking the series emphasized “hardwork and willpower.” Really all you need to do succeed is to be at the right moment in history and have tremendous luck. Worst part…they praised that.
>>
>>745861997
>Naruto
>Chosen One
actually the reincarnation prophecy stuff isn't real and doesn't matter, it's all aliens, and also the two prophesied guys, Naruto and Sasuke, are weak little bitches who lose everything and die so that these boring ass kids can just redo their story beats but worse with more sci-fi
>>
>>745863945
Naruto is the reincarnation of the son of Ninja Jesus, his father was Hokage that sealed the most powerful beast in him that he could tap into to save him and help him, his mother had a special bloodline that gave him his incredible chakra and Jiraya taught Naruto because he was given a prophecy that he would teach the Child of Destiny.
No, he is the most chosen one of all due to his soul, his lineage and prophecy.

>be 'chosen one'
>already know the game ends with my victory because plot armor, even if there may be a few losses along the way

>be nobody
>no guarantee of success
>struggle for victory

The problem I believe with the 'Chosen One' trope is that it's unrealistic and difficult to make a connection too. All four characters in your image have a connection to wealth/power or both. None of them earned it in a realistic fashion. Retard had a 'it's really strong i promise goys' fursona sealed within them as a baby, Dumbfuck just ate a fruit, Crybaby was born with space wizard powers, and Foureyes is a literal nepobaby.
>>
Batman solved this.
He's clearly "special". He's a genius billionaire built like a brick shithouse, but that's... about it.
>>
>>745864024
Honestly, Morrowind fucked around with the concept so much that it lost me
If you're at that point where you're going "you may or may not be the chosen one, everyone's going to shit on you for calling yourself that either way, and ultimately your destiny is to destroy the only thing holding Morrowind together and ruin things for everyone," you have to step back and ask what the fucking point of that element being in the story is other than making the player a puppet manipulated by forces outside of his understanding towards some still unknown purpose
>>
>>745864270
Goku isnt the Chosen One of anything. He would laugh or feel offended at someone saying he was destined to save the universe.
>>
>>745864263
I was using that image as a stand in for the chosen undead, not Oscar himself. But there are some unused scripts from an earlier build where he was also chosen and you two became rivals.
>>
>>745864270
>Goku
>chosen one

He's just the first one to achieve the legendary transformation, but we actually see him bust his ass to get where he is, only angry whiny manlets think otherwise.
>>
>>745864402
Dragon Ball Z doesn't really help itself with how many problems in the series boil down "wait for Goku to get here" which is why it feels like he's the Chosen One.
>>
>>745864331
The Nerevarine is just an Imperial agent who comes to Morrowind, exploits a sketchy local "prophecy", kills the four local anti-Empire "deities", and throws the place into disarray to weaken it.

There are those who insert themselves into stories and there are those who insert stories into themselves. The first group needs realistic stories to support their immersion, the second group needs grand narratives to support their escapism. Ultimately, I'm better than both of them, because I am the chosen one.

>anti-Empire
The Tribunal aren't anti-Empire, and the Empire didn't even know that the prophecy would involve destroying the thing sustaining the Tribunal's power. Vivec just tells you to do this on your own because evidently killing Dagoth is more important to him than preserving Morrowind' integrity (and his own)
>>
>>745861997
How about a Chosen One but the prophecy was actually misinterpreted and the main character turns out to be the villain that enslaves the whole world? Oh wait that's just Anakin

>House Dagoth and their god are super-mega-anti-Empire
Just because Vehk slurped Imperial cock in the surrender to save his skin like the whore he is doesn't mean the rest do.
The whole game is about you serving the Empire's will and exploiting the prophecy for Imperial gains. For fuck's sake, it's literally mandatory for you to be a member of the Imperial spooks if you actually follow the main quest.
>>
>>745862769
I think it's like the last airbender, you have a choice and not choosing to save the world fucks it
>>
>>745861997
My hot take that the trope is not good since it greatly limits your world. The chosen one does universe shifting or world altering actions that make the other characters in it seem greatly underwhelming in contrast. It is not a coincidence that all of those movies have weak sequels or reboots.
>>
>>745864936
The Empire has no idea what the prophecy even is, that's why you spend like half the game figuring out the basics of it for Caius

>>the Temple that worships them is anti-Empire
>>House Indoril who are the most devout are anti-Empire
>>the Ordinators who are the lead god's crew are anti-Empire
These are literally all the same faction, and they're not even particularly anti-Empire other than their rejection of the Imperial Cult and the Nine Divines in favor of the Tribunal. Apart from that the Dunmer generally just treat the empire and imperials like they do any other outlander

I disagree with you Naruto being the least chosen one but One piece fags that replied you are seething hard. Luffy and Anakin objectively have more chosen one features than Naruto. At least, compared to Luffy, Naruto had hardship because what makes him special. Luffy on the other han only has pluses.

Objectively, Harry is the least chosen one in OP's post. He is just a son of truly loving mother which is probably way more common than a chosen one. Also, he isn't the smartest or strongest among his peers. He isn't even needed to defeat Voldy. If Dumbledore was alive, he could have just killed Harry and Voldy after only horcrux left is Harry. Hell, with enough tactical plan and timing, others can also achive this without Dumbledore. JKR always tried to overplay Harry's specialness but when you think about it for second, there is nothing special about Harry in the context of Chosen Ones.
>>
>>745861997
Chosen One can work. The problem is some games forget to include a meaningful story to go with it, and instead use it as an excuse to make you a power fantasy and nothing more.

chosen one is a fine trope, it just keeps being done poorly. If it feels like the characters lose 'agency' in the context of some overarching plot, especially when 'victory' decided by fate doesn't align with the protagonists interests or goals, it makes it feel forced.

Chosen one also falls victim of writers shoehorning in these massive political battles and entanglements for the chosen one to overcome, even though the politics of countries, planets, rival schools, whatever is a matter of large scale interpersonal conflict and rarely black and white.

Stop doing it wrong and chosen one can work fine.

>>745861997
You're either a prophesied chosen one, or someone who works their way to becoming one. In a single player game where there's a narrative, the chosen one trope is often impossible to avoid, because the player will always find a way to stand out among their peers and be chosen over them. Even if your character isn't the leader of the team they're part of, you were still special enough to be put into the team that will end up saving the world.

The Jedi are objectively terrible people in the prequels barring a few outliers like Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon. They are arrogant, dogmatic, complicit in corruption, inactive in many galactic conflicts and affairs, socially aloof and constantly go back on their “code” or “beliefs” e.g. they claim Dooku isnt evil because he was a former Jedi or claim to not be militant soldiers then join a war and lead an army in the same week.

I don't think Gorion's Ward counts.
They aren't particularly special in the big picture of special people of the Forgotten Realms. >>
The problem is probably not so much that you're the chosen one, but rather that being the chosen one makes you stand out too much. I think people would largely be fine with this trope if little to no people in the world actually knew about how special you were and just treated you like a normal guy, something similar to how super hero stories do it where the protag has a secret identity.

Anakin was primarily a weapon that the Force created to btfo Creamy Sheev.
Secondarily, he was created to test the Jedi and see if they could refocus their stagnating order back on the Will of the Force. They failed and they died, so that Anakin's son could rebuild the Jedi Order back to one that focuses on the Force rather than galactic politics.
Space God could have dropped Anakin on Coruscant where he would have been discovered as a child and trained like every other Jedi. He would have become strong and btfo Sheev as intended, but the Jedi Order would not have been fixed. Instead, it dropped him on an Outer Rim world outside the jurisdiction of the Republic, where he wouldn't be found until late into his childhood, causing friction with the dogmatic way the Jedi operate as of the Prequels.

I hate retroactive Chosen One shit like in Naruto. Like we progressively find out the entire fucking universe revolves around him as the story progresses, and he has special shit in his bloodline which is such a departure from where it started. Taming Kurama should have been the beginning and the end of his special power, a curse he turned into a blessing with Talk no Jutsu.
The Nika fruit and Joy Boy parallels in One Piece feel like an asspull too, but I trust Oda more. It feels slightly more deliberate and doesn't fly in the face of Luffy's personal journey. I can believe Oda had it storyboarded out a long time ago.
Chosen Ones that are established early and either carry it like a burden (Harry Potter) or turn evil with that power (Anakin) are generally preferable, but like everything, it depends on the writer.

Also helps that, even with the Nika Fruit, Luffy still technically lost to the Elders (needed Joyboy's Haki to finally get them off his back), and he got his shit kicked in by Imu, so at least he still has a way to go.

Chosen one is so overdone even back then that the only way to do it right is to subvert the trope so being special sucks. The only reason that hasn't gotten old yet is because it hasn't been done enough. Remember how capeshit went from bright and cheerful to edgy and ironic like the boys. Now everyone is tired of the subverted hero shit where 2025 superman felt refreshing when it played supes straight

No one but retards did that. Very early on we learn his incredible lineage, we learn he has conqueror Haki which only a chosen few have, he has the voice of all things, Shanks calls him the child of the next generation, we learn that many people from Roger's era were waiting for someone like Luffy to appear. This is all before we learn about the fruit being a mythical fruit. Even considering all that, it did take incredible effort for him to reach the point where he could awaken his powers, it was not gifted to him.

Actually we just watched the series and saw that for ourselves. Of all major "chosen one" characters Luffy worked the hardest to earn his, fighting for 25 real world years to make it to the top without ever unlocking more than a tiny fraction of his powers. Even now he has only ever used his new form to do things he's either already done before, or saw someone else do.

When are we going to stop forcing the meme that Luffy is a chosen one?
>>
>>745865056
The answer is to have chosen one-ness not be all encompassing, which is to say they will solve some problems, but not all of them. For example, the chosen one will bring water back to the desert, but keeping it out of the hands of evil empire's coffers is another matter entirely. Or, only the chosen one can banish the ancient evil, but someone else will need to keep their army of the night from exterminating all life while the chosen one is banishing. If you put in the effort, you can have a chosen one change the world, others keep it from breaking, and all aspects are compelling.
>>
I think Anakin is honestly one of the best chosen one characters to be made. It's not a secret to him that he's the Chosen One. He is prophesized to be someone of significant propotion. and yet, even with that, he's a terrible apprentice. He is constantly held back because he can't follow basic instructions or core tenants of being a Jedi, despite the fact that he's actually very skilled. He's a star athlete being benched for his lackluster history grades.
Even though he has all his power, even though he's the one literally chosen by the force, he cannot save his mom, and he's worried he'll lose his wife. He's a great tragedy character and I never liked it when he was slandered for decades.

being the chosen one invalidates achievements because winning is the expected result, a nobody has to fight and struggle against all odds wrenching victory from the jaws of defeat, everyone expects them to lose so that makes winning much sweeter. on the other hand, everyone knows the chosen one will win if they just get off their arse and go do it, they're playing on easy mode and, in a sense, they didn't beat the game.

I don't think Conqueror's Haki is genetic or something you have to be born with, I think the implication is more that in order to have Conqueror's, you must have a strong unbreaking will, and if your will is flimsy to begin with/was broken before, it is very very difficult to reacquire that level of confidence. That's why Kaido sent Luffy to the salt mines to buck break him, presumably because he gets off on castrating conqueror's users.

Most people don't want to be "chosen ones". What they want is the power and/or authority that comes with the package.
Some people want fame to come with it, others want to stay behind camera or in the shadows, and others just want the option to use force to correct the things they want corrected and don't give a shit either way if people know or not.
Reductionists like OP almost always got their ass bit pretty hard trying to act important somewhere, and now spend their lives deflecting with sick desperation.

Doesn't matter if theyre explicitly "chosen" or not. A hero who wins through hard work was put in a situation where their merit of hard work (and no one else's) gets them victory. A chosen one still works hard too.

NTA but I dont even know anything about Naruto and I wonder how a fan could somehow still be invested in the series knowing how it turned out, compared to what it had promised. Naruto was never about hardwork overcoming talent or something like that, Naruto is framed as an underdog because he's a lonely loser who nobody expects anything from. Naruto's major theme is the harshness of the ninja world and breaking the never ending cycle of tragedy. This theme gets undermined by the fact that Nardo is an unironic christ figure due to being the reincarnation of a son of ninja god.
>>
>>745877741
Naruto betraying its original ethos is actually one of the biggest criticisms against it. People will often do backflips or retroactively try and fit it into the early series when you point it out, but early on it was very clearly supposed to be a "hard work can put you above even people with amazing talents" story. A lot of the early fights make zero fucking sense from a narrative standpoint if the whole idea was that some people are just born better like the series later adopts.
>>
>>745878062
Literally one of Naruto's biggest character moments in Part 1 is defying Neji's destiny mentality of being inferior because of clan branch genetics and that hardwork can overcome geniuses. Be serious.
>>
>>745877546

>>

>>
>>745866914
No you've been pointing out how unwholsome chungus everyone is to your lord and savior Emil
>>
>>745878161
got any other examples?
>>
>>745878161
Neji's mentality of being inferior has nothing to do with genetics, because he's genetically as close to the main house as Hinata is (their fathers were identical twins), it's do with the fact that because his father was born mere seconds after Hinata's and he was condemned to the branch where he and his father had what are essentially slave seals place on them.

He has a defeatist mindset because his father willingly let himself be killed in Hinata's fathers place as that was the only meaningful choice he could make as a branch family member, this mentality was made worse by the fact that despite being overwhelmingly better than Hinata, the clan heir, his own station in life would never improve.

Naruto, the only person who could relate to him, instead convinces him that he shouldn't give up on life, not that hard work overcomes talent as Neji is infinitely a harder worker than Nardo and Nardo only wins the fight with the Kyuubi's power.
>>
>>745878265
he won in our hearts
>>
>>745878161
That was just one character arc of many
Think about how many training arcs there are in Naruto.
Exactly, the series was never hardwork and shit. Only Neji and Rock Lee were about hard work, the rest of the cast deals with a whole range of societal issues.
>>
>>745877868
>I would hate being the chosen one in real life.
Yeah no shit, that would suck. People think chosen ones get everything handed to them when all real life examples had to suffer tremendously such as numerous prophets, then there's those chosen to be a sacrifice to the gods, the ones we invent in our fictitious stories differ wildly from our own examples from religions.

Transvestite nonsense thread. Enjoy the HRT journey, sister!

Naruto's entire early narrative is ruined because of him being the Chosen One though.
>orphan who has a monster inside of him, which does make him stronger but is still a curse more than a blessing
>he believes he can defy his horrible fate and encourages others to defy theirs (Neji in particular) claiming that the people's future is in the palm of their own hands
>his rival/best friend and the aforementioned Neji are both a traumatic outcome of clan politics which Naruto turns his nose up at and claims he will change for their sake and the sake of future generations
This is how Naruto was portrayed at first and it was decent. Believing in himself after having a harrowing upbringing and believing in his friends who also went through some horrible shit in spite of fate was a central ideology of early Naruto.

Then
>we find out that tailed beasts are actually even more uber powerful
>naruto's dad is a the 4th hokage
>naruto's mom is from a prestigious clan that actually has a higher chakra capacity than most people
>naruto's 9 tails is actually the most powerful tailed beast
>naruto is the child of prophecy that the great toad sage had visions of
>naruto actually mastered senjutsu super easily being literally like 1 in a million
>he was actually the reincarnation of the grandson of the mother of all chakra who is basically god
And then Neji dies as a slave
>>
>>745878475
Don't forget his clan is also an offshoot of the Senju clan, basically the strongest in the world during their hayday.
>>
>>745877487
he is the literal second coming of ninja christ, without hyperbole.

Most of the early posters were also way ahead by watching in Japanese online or reading the manga so they knew. So yeah, zoomers and zillenials on the site now grew up with the show and know about it, but that doesn't mean the anime didn't have completely irredeemable writing at some points.

Naruto is a series that shows a lot of promise early on but then shits the bed at some point (which point varies depending on who you ask), so it draws in a big crowd that then ends up largely being disappointed. I feel like by the time Shippuden happens, at the latest, people still watching the series and defending it are basically in full sunk cost mode.
>>
>>745878953
The other entries have no effect on Shulk's character arch and its relationship with the chosen one trope. If anything, they largely reinforce that he's not particularly special after serving his purpose as Zanza's vessel.

Now, if you wanted to take issue with how the other Xenoblade protagonists are handled with this trope, I'd probably agree.
>>

Naruto is liked but it really could've been way better as a series if Kishi wasn't a retard
There's almost zero worlbuilding
The villains fall into this loop of "he was manipulated by someone BIGGER" and it happens like 4 times in a row so nobody is evil they're all innocent puppies
Redemption is weird, Itachi is a hero despite killing children and grannies but Danzo is the worst because ??????
Like it has very high highs and the lows are all over the place
Then the reincarnation stuff SO6P bullshit

Well turns out it was not a rubber fruit but a mythical zoan fruit, model Nika. The World Goverment just concealed it's true nature all this time.
Nika is this god of like freedom and stuff and has rubberhose cartoon like physique and toonforce logic.
Pumping blood fast to gain speed? That was Toonforce.
Immunity to Enel's lightning because of rubber? Toonforce.
Blowing air into your bone to make a giant fist? Fucking Nika toonforce.

>Anakin

This is the chosen one, but in a bad way, but it's nearly impossible to tell from the current state of Star Wars just how much agency characters actually have compared to the force. I subscribe to the idea that it's all just wishful thinking, or at least that the Jedi's understanding is corrupted and faulty, and each character makes their own destiny.

>Harry

Rowling plays fast & loose with the canon of the Hogwartsverse. Harry is clearly the chosen one in the first two books, then he's an average joe in books three through six, and then he becomes the chosen one again.

He wasn't destined to eat the fruit, the fact that he ate it was basically a situational event. There's nothing in the story that says Luffy was destined to do that from birth, he was just hungry.

>>745885265
Yes, basically. Though the amount of prestige he comes from (his dad and grandpa being among the top 10 most important people in the world) don't help his case. If anything, his devil fruit is the chosen one.
>>
>>745885265
Yeah, it's more like his devil fruit was the chosen devil fruit and he just happened to be the guy that ate it because he was retarded.
>>
>>745881994
So it would seem
>>
>>745885427
No, he's this generations Joyboy. The fruit picked him because of his personality and traits. The sun and its connection to him has been linked to the entire story. Anyone claiming it as a last-minute asspull hasn't been paying attention since pre time skip

Being the chosen one a lot of the time dumbs down the story. Sometimes it even invalidates it entirely by going "muh destiny".
The real reason they are hated is fake sincerity. It's infuriating when a story tries to make it's Mary Sue or Gary Stu seem relatable and just like your everyday generic goon.

The Chosen One trope makes no fucking sense in a video game story because it's expected that you, the player, and their character they control, is the Chosen One. Maybe not from a literal, narrative standpoint, but from the nature of being a fucking video game with progression, power ups, and a win condition, you the player are the chosen one.

When the game's story also lays it on thick that "You are the chosen one, go do this", and keeps on singing you praises and talking about how there's some ancient prophecy, it's fucking eye-roll inducing because it's not as if you, the player, weren't going to do these things anyways regardless of some prophecy or vision telling you were you were destined to do these things.

Chosen One tropes only work in movies, TV, cartoons and books where the audience isn't in control of the protagonist.

>>745862459
>>745863827
In general the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne and Elden Ring are more about how literal nobodies get forged into being badasses and just accidentally become involved into being labeled chosen one, mostly via manipulation.
>>
If you watch Naruto, are over the age of 18 and you don't think it's complete fucking trash, and his character isn't cringe as fuck rom the get-go with "Believe it!", "I am lel bullied faggot", '"I'm a cuck who likes a girl that doesn't like me back!", and you like the garbage ass story, you're low IQ and cringe yourself.

Has any story ever left a sour taste in your mouth by a sudden Chosen One revelation?

>story lays it thick that the other Xenoblade protagonists are Chosen Ones
>Rex is just some dude who was at the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time
>the only semblance of him being a "Chosen one" is him being connected to a bloodline of a fallen kingdom, but that's not even unique to him, and his bloodline was only needed to unlock the biomechanisms of an ancient ship rather than to actually use the McGuffin
>story beats you over the head plenty of times that Rex is just some dude and that any more competent and skilled swordsman or warrior would have been a better partner for Pyra/Mythra (and they could have awakened them just like he did) and the only thing that sets him apart his his determination and naive optimism
>actually rises to the occasion and becomes a powerful, better person all on his own and gets rewarded for it, saves the world, changes God's mind and befriends him, etc

>story DLC just reveals that this was all predetermined 500 years ago in a vision

>game lived long enough that in order to justify your MC being dick-sucked by everyone they had to reveal he's the reincarnation of the super-duper extra cool member of the local Organization XIII
Amazing.
>>
No matter how much try to push it, Luffy is not the Chosen One. He just got lucky and got a strong fruit, and not even the strongest fruit in the series. Not to mention it took over 1000 chapters for him to unlock its full potential anyway.

In Bloodborne you’re just trying to escape the nightmare hell of Yharnam. Hell the first time you arrive there its to find a cure.

Tyranny, oh so much. I know i should have suspected something because there was no way in hell the devs were going for a full lawful evil campaign, but the railroading into having your MC becoming the one that will defeat Kyros was just embarassing.
>>
>>745886375
To be fair in the context of Xenoblade almost everything is predetermined outside of characters who exist outside of fate since the future can be predicted by the movement of matter. There wasn't some prophecy or legend dictating Rex is the chosen one. If anything the fact that his role is predetermined makes him far less of a chosen one than Shulk is.

Stories are about change. People read stories to see what happens when the dominoes are arranged in a certain way and someone pushes them over. Why? Why care about that? Because it teaches you lessons about what you should do when confronted with such a situation. When the environment changes, how do you adapt?

With these tropes (the chosen one, child of prophecy, superior blood, my dad is ninja jesus, the reincarnation of Buddha, the conga line of nepotism) there is no change. Fate was decided before the story even began. It tells the reader not to do anything in particular, but to simply hope you were always fated to succeed. That's a bad story. It doesn't even teach you to roll the dice and pray you get lucky, it teaches you that the dice were already rolled and there's nothing you can do about it.

And no it's not true to life. It makes sense on paper, but it doesn't play out in practice. Isaac Newton's parents were farmers. Heritability is sloppy and, while eminent people roll better dice when they reproduce, there's way, way, way more normal people rolling dice.

>99% of the One Piece world
Systematic/logistical issues that others have already mentioned aside, another issue is that lots of people believe there's nothing wrong with the current status quo and/or enthusiastically enforce it. They genuinely believe nothing bad will happen to them if they just keep their heads down and pay their taxes, and that their rights are permanently inalienable, even though "pirate" in the OP world basically amounts to "any seafaring persons that don't lick the World Government's boot". Then propaganda and the occasional good guy government pet like Garp or Kopy maintain this faith.

Real life works pretty much the exact same way.
