If you play Japanese games, you need to learn Japanese. Simple as.
>>
>>746477565
I DONT WANT TO DO MY ANKI REPS
>>
MTL + knowledge up to hiragana, katakana and 30 years of being a weeb are enough to get me by.
>>
why would I learn gook shit when they speak perfectly fine english?
>>
>>746477565
you will never learn slang or culture from learning a language and duolingo went to shit with ai.
>>
>>746480125
Duolingo was always shit lmao
>>
>>746477565
It's not that easy woman! Even kid shit has vocab I don't know.
>>
>>746477565
I've learnt the most of hiragana and katakana with a few that trip me up. Main goal right now is to be able to play a Pokemon game in Japanese. Eventually I'd like to play untranslated RPGs with kanji down the road.

>>
>>746477565
But I don't like the language or the culture/history and I don't plan to ever go to Japan.
>>
>>746477565
I can just fantasize about what they are saying and have fun

There are too many words. I watch a SoL anime and still end up mining 50+ words, it never fucking ends.
Though just playing some vidya without auto-advancing dialogue is easy enough you can do it after a year. Any game, really. Will just take some effort.
>>
>>746477565
I cant because I am too retarded
Most of what I want to play has been translated enough already anyway.
>>
>>746477565
Already learnt japanese
Now japanese games are either pozzed straight from the source or aimed at dumb zoomers so they are just either way

Dont learn japanese in 2026
>>
>>746484174
True, maybe Korean or Chinese is the better pick nowadays.
But I fear it's all eventually moving towards the same direction.
>>
>>746477565
i study everyday, i will become fluent in japanese, i am a good boy
>>
What about Mario games?
>>
>>746477565
>if you eat italian food you have to live with an italian grandma for 5 years
>if you fuck a chinese hand job whore you have to go to mandarin economic zone #3 for half your life
>if you jerk off to a slav insta model you have to spend three weeks in a gulag drinking fermented bread vodka and eating half rotten potatoes (typical russian vacation)
>if you season your grilled skirt steak with chiles and too much sugar and pepper you need to post from a 3rd story mud and 2x4 brazilian favela with the satellite internet equivalent of first gen DSL for 4 months
>>
>>746484662
But unironically.
>>
I thought I could learn if I played a simple game like Pokemon but it becomes a pain looking up kanji and conjugation every sentence.
>>
>>746477565
I have peaked at eternal N4. I will keep struggling, but I don't think I can make it further. Doesn't help that atm I'm not naturally spending much time on nip games.
Still, I want to train my スピード further. Any recs on VNs that aren't too horrible for me to care about nor ridiculously sophisticated in language but aren't too great to the point I'll feel bad when I'm not getting 100% of the plot? Just something to grease the wheel. Bonus if no/togglable furigana.
>>
>>746477565
I think I'll rather quit playing Japanese games. What's the last good game japs even made, I don't know anymore. They're irrelevant now.
>>
>>746484662
I like that these punishment times are generally in scale with how tolerable they are.
>>
>>746477695
So don't. Just read/listen more. Anki doesn't teach you the language anyway.
>>
>you need to
no i don't, i just do it because i like it
>>
>>746480125
You learn shitloads of slang (and culture) from reading manga because the text is 99% dialogue.
>duolingo went to shit
Duolingo is a scam dude. How can a scam "go to shit"? lol
>>
>>746483075
Kana only text is impossible to read as a beginner because you can't tell where words end/begin. Also you can't differentiate homophones without kanji.
>>
>>746483925
You're not meant to mine every word.
Only the ones that are very frequent.
>>
>>746484174
So play some of the thousands of games released before they got """pozzed""".
>>746484832
Don't look up everything. You need to spend some time just being comfortable with ambiguity. This helps you increase your reading speed and helps you train your ability to infer meaning through context.
>>
>>746485916
seconding this, i started with yotsuba and after a short while i noticed it's harder to read what yotsuba herself is saying, because it's always kana only

>>
>>746486215
True. That said, I tried doing the full immersion tadoku-style plunging through words with Yotsuba and didn't end up learning much. I came back to it now as an N3 peasant and reading it is so much more satisfying.

I also recommend しろくまカフェ. It's pretty funny and it's got short chapters.
>>
>>746486559
>I also recommend しろくまカフェ
i'd read it if i could find a decent copy, alll scanlations i came across are dogshit
>>
>>746486661
It's available on Nyaa. Furigana is pretty small but decipherable.
>>
>>746485960
If anything, that's the exact opposite of what you should be doing. Why mine "very frequent" words if you already see them often enough.
But it's easier to just mine everything because a word may be frequent or absent entirely depending on the setting, story, and writer's active vocab.

eventually after a while you will stop looking up basic words
then you stop looking up uncommon but still important stuff

The hardest thing with immersion and what makes me struggle is that I feel like I need to be fine with only understanding like half or even less or what I'm reading. I have a decent grasp on grammar but I still struggle to grasp more than the general idea of a sentence and identifying the subject isn't always easy either (still mixing up the I/you/they).
But I guess the trick is to simply push on and let your brain subsconsciouly record language patterns so it ends up making sense over time.

>>
>>746495691
>But I guess the trick is to simply push on and let your brain subsconsciouly record language patterns so it ends up making sense over time.
that's half of it
the other half is stop mentally translating it in your head to westoidese and forcefully understanding it raw in japanese
once you "get" it, immersion becomes exponentially easier
>>
>>746495691
I recently read ATRI as my first VN that I have not read before in English.
Aside from the all the water and technology related jargon, I think I did grasp what was being told to me. BUT it feels like I didn't "enjoy" it as much as I could.

And what if this is true? I don't want my experiences with games or VNs be lesser. Should I avoid stuff that is completely new to me, and stick with rereading/replaying stuff that I'm already familiar with?

How long does it take until I can enjoy something in the same capacity as in english?
>>
>>746496201
>How long does it take until I can enjoy something in the same capacity as in english?
after a while you will not be able to consume translated material at all

>The hardest thing with immersion and what makes me struggle is that I feel like I need to be fine with only understanding like half or even less or what I'm reading.
Yes and no. Making sense of something despite not fully understanding it is useful. That said, it still has to be enjoyable and it can't lose you completely. Here, check this.

this is literal cope to procrastinate, just reread it again
you would be surprised how much extra depth you actually understand after a decent jump in comprehension, it unironically feels like reading it for the first time again from how much you missed
>>
>>746496030
>the other half is stop mentally translating it in your head to westoidese
crucial part that's not always easy because it's something you always have to learn and then unlearn no matter the language
for overlay readers, it's where being lazy can actually be beneficial "oh fuck I had enough of parsing through several definitions to find what fits best 甘い just means 甘い let's continue" is the good thought process

>>746496201
read moege, stuff that you've already finished or just something you know will be middling, that way you won't miss much but even then you WILL want to go back to that work later on once you've improved
the work on which you started practicing will become a reference point for you and you alone so it's kinda nice to have that personal relationship with a work

>>746496334
I tend to disagree, there are translators I enjoy a lot and sometimes I'd rather read them than the original, I'm an ESL and sometimes I deliberately go for translations of English works as well.
>>
>>746496740
>crucial part that's not always easy because it's something you always have to learn and then unlearn no matter the language
It's not rare for people to say the hardest part of learning japanese is unfucking your cognitive functions from the literal brain cancer that is english.
And mind you that is very much true, and this is also why the very few spics and non-english yuros, and even some SEAnigs that have enough cognition to learn another language have such an easy time learning japanese, because they just skip the hard part.
>>
>>746496709
>this is literal cope to procrastinate,
What? I did suggest the alternative, rereading/replaying something that I already have read/played. Who cares if I enjoy it less? I've already read/played it in english.

But I'm going to take this as you didn't care about this when you started learning.

>>
>>746496870
>Yeah maybe I just need to stick with "mid". ATRI was something I was looking forward to.
the issue is the balance between it being motivational to read and not wanting to spoil it
I'd recommend just "burning" the stuff that motivates you to read them on the altar of language acquisition
though if it's actually feels too hard then do postpone it
>>
>>746484015
kinda same, I don't have the resource to "just learn Japanese", neither the time nor the money for extra tuition. So what's the pitch, kinda try on the side, and get proficient in 5+ years? Okay and then? Play some shit-ass VN that nobody cares about?
I don't like bad translations that change the context in major releases, that sucks, but the "just learn the language brah" is bs, I think it's a deflection

ESL here, I learned the English language through vidya like most of the ESLs here and I still remember certain turning points in my experience. I played early SNES/N64/GB games basically by just pressing my way through not understanding any words. Around the time of Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft I was 'capable' of reading English and playing the games but not so much following the actual story or understanding it. At some point after playing enough vidya things just clicked, and I was able to replay wc3 and deepdive into the lore.
Replaying games aint prohibited and I'd say it's in fact encouraged when you're still learning
>>
>>746497634
can you see yourself consuming Japanese media in 10 years?
if so, then at least open up to the possibility of learning
you will pick up a lot just by being exposed to the language, if you realize:
exposure to language = learning language

resource is not just "there is stuff available". Self-tuition is not for everbody - I know for example, that I need structure that "here's a workbook hf" just does not provide. *Time* is also a resource, as is energy. When it comes to the question "should I just learn a language on the side" or, if we're talking about "work/study", read things that help me professionally? The priority is clear. OP and some folks in here treat learning a language, especially Japanese like it's this trivial thing, when it simply isn't.

The thing with japanese is that to get fluent in it, you basically have to NEED it.
Either you need it for work (or get fired), you need it to live (or starve to death in japan), or you need it to not spiritually die (or stick to westoidese).
It very much cannot be a "side" thing, you either NEED it or you don't learn it, it's that simple.

Having had to learn French in school and having since forgotten it, this is basically true of any language. If you're not actively engaging with it regularly then you're slowly slipping back. That said, if you're fighting to find a reason to learn a language before you've even started, you're doomed.

Kanji is easy. Kanji is the guiding light that compensates for your shit vocabulary. It's a crutch. Anyone who believes that kanji is the bottleneck to learning Japanese never moved past being a beginner.

It's not different at all there's just an extra layer to it, one that's not insurmountable mind you as I know enough Cyrillic natives who did the exact same thing with games like WC3 and HOMM. Learning Kana as an adult takes less than 2 weeks if you really want to know Japanese. From there on you can use furi to read kanji and otherwise just keep a jouyou kanji list at the ready. Just consume content

You have two options for something easy.
You can't really do VNs because while they are easier than other texts AND are voiced, they are still above your grade.
You can't really do LNs because even the simplest ones are way above your grade.
Vidya works, but you split your focus between gameplay and reading, and it can get fatiguing if you just want to play the fucking game.
Anime works, and it's one of the first things you get access to easily past the beginner bump, but you haven't gotten past that beginner bump, which means trying to watch anime raw or even with JP subtitles means it will be too fast for you to parse.

That leaves you with 2 options.
One, literal shounenslop, dragon ball, naruto, bleach, JJK, HxH, etc.
They are basic enough that even literal toddlers can read it and you get a metric fuckton of furigana to make things even easier, the only "hard" parts will be terminology, names, worldbuilding, and powerscaling shit, which go down the throat easy with the fuckton of furigana, visual aid, and shounenshit not being that complicated.

Two, literal doujins and hentai, not even joking, the plots are extremely simple, but this also results on extremely simple language, you may not get furigana depending on what you fap to, but they are very easy to read, and the either lovey-dovey or rapey-funny bits will still be simple enough for you to get decent vocabulary.

for example, what is the point of trying to rec you obscure autistic combat-heavy VNs if you just want to watch romcom anime?
and also ignores this is not limited to non-translated stuff, the westoidese versions are always literal fanfics meaning nothing is properly translated either way

>Learn Kana
>Watch cure dolly or read tae kim, don't heavily study it
>Read, tolerate ambiguity

The hardest part of this is tolerating ambiguity, which at the beginning there'll be a lot of.
If you really MUST have a studying hook to it then use intensive and extensive reading. For example:
>Read shirokuma café in Japanese, don't look up anything
>Read it again in English, or read the Japanese one while translating EVERY word
>3rd read once again in Japanese
>>

One of my first games was Tokimeki Memorial and it was pretty good for a beginner I think. Primarily conversational Japanese, not a lot of jargon or specific terms, and very repetitive so you're drilling phrases into your head. I'd avoid anything high fantasy/scifi at first since you're going to run into a lot of jargon that isn't really widely applicable.

Fun fact, you can actually straight up skip "learning kana" by just going through the next step in the guide by assuming you already learnt them all and instead just look them up on a chart whenever needed, which early on will be literally on every single kana, but it gets easier down the line.
The end result is "learning" kana in 3 seconds, and actually learning them through repetition in like a week while actually progressing things that matter in the grammar and kanji angles.

>if you eat italian food you have to live with an italian grandma for 5 years
you don't to know italian to eat italian food, however your analogy is retarded when the number 1 piece of advice often given to tourists is to avoid tourist trap restaurants and go off the main roads to eat at family-run restaurants, which have better food for cheaper
>if you fuck a chinese hand job whore you have to go to mandarin economic zone #3 for half your life
you don't need to know chink to get chink STDs
>if you jerk off to a slav insta model you have to spend three weeks in a gulag drinking fermented bread vodka and eating half rotten potatoes (typical russian vacation)
you don't need to know byat to wank off to some 3dpd ruskie whore, though you may need google translate to find those images in the first place
>if you season your grilled skirt steak with chiles and too much sugar and pepper you need to post from a 3rd story mud and 2x4 brazilian favela with the satellite internet equivalent of first gen DSL for 4 months
you don't need to know hue/spic to use hue/spic seasonings, through again, you may need mtl to read their recipes, as westoid recipes may be inferior

and again, none of these examples are media experiences with focus on narrative, which by definition require focus on the language used, also none of these examples have a literal 30+ year industry of sabotaging niggers hellbent on ruining the given example out of jealously through literal cultural imperialism and appropriation
at most, like with the italian example, you get a few cheap grifters taking advantage of clueless tourists, but i don't see a horde of people saying eating italian food is pointless because it's literally all bad, basing this opinion off said grifter cheapshit tourist trap sloppa, who then proceed to constantly attack you for even trying to eat anything italian at all, like i see for people trying to experience jp media as the original authors intended

If you really want to brute force it, force your brain into only ever using japanese and instantly stop any train of thought done in english, even if it's anything as small as "damn", or "what the fuck", or "I fucking forgot" and "I understand it now", stop it and re-say it in japanese in your internal monologue, and if you don't know how to say it in japanese, you fucking look it up.
Is it fucking exhausting? Yes, you may unironically start to get sleepy from the brain fatigue after a mere 10 minutes from how fucking exhausting it is.
But even if you're a complete fucking brainlet you will "get" it after a mere few hours and you easily "unlock" thinking in japanese.

Just follow the regular guide. But one change I'd make is setting your Anki FSRS retention rate to 80%, down from 90%. When you're doing 20 new cards a day at 1m 5m 10m intervals, this makes such an unbelievable difference without impacting your actual retention too much. And honestly you will forget half of Kaishi anyway, it's just a deck to get your foot in the door. Start immersing ASAP. Do it today if you can. Even if you don't understand anything, just begin immediately, and don't procrastinate.

>>746503347
You can get very fluent like that, but it's inefficient. Matt's argument stems from the fact that when you learn your mother tongue, you learn it entirely by listening and doing very basic speaking before you learn to read and write. Just one problem - you lose this "language sponge" power the older you get, and also you need to basically have 100% coverage of Japanese in your daily life. This is next to impossible if you are not living there.
Just learn to read and listen all at once. It's not that hard.

mining is a meme, just do the first 200-500 cards of whatever deck you feel works fine and then go straight to immersion and looking shit up as you immerse, the lookup process works as spaced repetition, which anki is supposed to cover
you also get both terms, conjugations, lingo, and far more immediately useful vocabulary by doing this, instead of sticking to an arbitrary list of raw vocab like you do with anki

NTA, but: you can look into jiten.moe or jpdb.io for flashcard decks that you want to mine with content in mind, if that also helps. Renshuu is a good, also free, site that you can test grammar on individual levels to learn it properly. Bunpo (Bunpro?) is another site for grammar, but you have to pay (not worth it). You can use Lengualytics to look for YouTube content for immersion listening. There is also this really simple "Graded Reader" manga called "Crystal Hunters." Kind of ass, but it's good enough to test babby's first introduction to manga and also has a native Japanese edition when you want to upgrade. Both are available nationally. You can mine manga using a built-in dictionary extension through Chromium browsers called Yomitan. With that, you can find manga .json files to load in Mokuro to read and study at the same time. Also the NS has an easy swap to Japanese via the console language and will allow you to play most games in Japanese.

just a flurry of words i've never heard with no gestures, context, or hints and it's just like "wow i know nothing what the fuck am i doing here"

i'm sitting there asking if he can say it again slowly as i desperately try to pick out any keywords i might know as he repeats the same shit at the same speed

i have intrinsic desire to learn and do hobbies and everything but a high level of japanese just isnt necessary for my day to day

but things like job interviews and buying a house are like pulling teeth

i'm sure it sounds stupid but i just feel like i know tons of stuff but none of it is connected and i just dont know where to start.

like, i tried japanese group lessons and they were so boring and itr was 2 hours every week of listening to indians mangle the language and introducing myself to the revolving door or japanese staff and/or SEA people

i tried genki textbooks but they're in japanese and super dry and honestly i just speed through and don't recall much

i try apps like anki and it goes great for a few days then i forget for a week and then it's 700 reviews that i don't remember at all, and i just end up memorizing a bunch of useless vocab anyway
