Nobody played Newgrounds games because it was the best that was out there, anon. They played them because they were too poor for anything better or because it's what they passed the time with in their computer labs at school prior to the age of smartphones.

People who say that AI can make an "infinite possibility of games to play" is like all the retarded shills in the TTRPG medium saying "AI dungeon masters are the way of the future," and all that gets generated are thousands of jumbled dungeon maps with no sense of cohesion, lore, or consistency. If you're entertained by endless slop, you have a bright future ahead of you. Just try to understand that a lot of people don't have standards THAT low yet.

physical books written before 2022

oh wait they're destroying those too
>>
>>747175808
Honestly? Probably not an escape from slop. But there can absolutely be an escape from having to engage with it.

AI makes the cost of producing mediocre ROM hacks approach zero, which means we're likely to get an enormous flood of them. The important thing is that zero-cost creation doesn't make zero-cost attention. Most of those hacks will disappear into the noise because nobody will care enough to play them.

The healthier future probably looks like:

Curated communities become more valuable. Trusted ROM-hack sites, reviewers, Discords, forums, and individual creators become filters rather than just directories.
Authenticity becomes a selling point. "Made by one person over three years" may eventually carry more prestige precisely because it signals human investment.
Reputation matters more than volume. A creator with five excellent hacks will be more interesting than an account dumping 500 AI-generated ones.
Small circles can remain remarkably insulated. A private Discord of people who actually playtest each other's work doesn't need to care that 100,000 autogenerated hacks appeared elsewhere.
The slop will become easier to recognize. Right now there's novelty and uncertainty. Eventually people will develop extremely fast intuitions for the characteristic "AI ROM hack" fingerprints.

And there's a funny paradox here: the more effortless it becomes to manufacture content, the more meaningful genuinely scarce human attention becomes.

If you're into ROM hacks because you enjoy craft—someone obsessing over level design, music, sprites, mechanics, balance, weird little ideas—then AI flooding the scene doesn't actually eliminate that stuff. It just makes finding it more important.

So yes, the firehose is probably coming.

But you don't have to drink from it.
>>
