>>748633240
I know this is bait but I'll answer it. There's nothing wrong with using AI for decomps/recomps IF there was something in place to prevent the AI from going haywire. Byte matching which you see in those 100% complete are good measurements because you know it's exactly the same as the original was, this still doesn't mean it's useful because you COULD just dump all the bytes of the original using a copy command and well there's an exact match but it wouldn't be "source code" because it's hard to read and it's not a "decomp". For a recomp a copy doesn't work because it's meant to be played on another platform so you need some way to translate that with that also requiring some way to verify that the thing does the same as it would on another platform, for most games eyeballing it what most vibecoders do is enough for them but 80/20 the last 20% is usually the most difficult and time consuming.

There's varying degrees but with the new advent of AI and a lot of people who have never used a compiler before you get people with severe low standards producing low quality slop compared to people who had to before do the grunt work so they also set high standards because there wasn't any reason to do it any other way if you weren't going for that goal in the end.

The only issue people usually involved in making recomps/decomps before AI were already not most humans and already exceptionally skilled at what they were doing.

Yes and AI will multiply their skill even more because that's what AI is and will be a multiplier for the already skilled.
>>

AI could be a useful tool paired with someone who actually knows what they're doing to clean it up and refactor it afterwards.
but this "tool" will not lead to such results 99% of the time. and soon it'll become normal for the average "programmer" who grew up never having to think about their code to simply not understand how to do it anymore than the modern average programmer can write programs in assembly.

Based on what evidence? Recompilation is simple but tedious work. You’re just reimplementing existing code. It’s a bunch of folx with too much time on their hands, not necessarily anyone with talent.

That's exactly the point, though. "AI is writing bad code nobody can read (>>748634181)" is a meme propagated by techlets who never read let alone written a single line of code in their lives. Sure, now anyone can make slop, but if you're even just somewhat competent, you can actually use it to its full extent and speed up your work. As someone who's working in swe and was initially AI skeptical, I could significantly speed up my work with AI and I'm fairly sure it writes better code even without any babysitting than most juniors.

There is LITERALLY nothing wrong with using AI for code.

Coding occasionally some creativity (blah blah fast inverse square root etc.) but for the most part is busywork slop.
AI for code is like a factory for producing aluminum cans. You're not going to hand make that shit. If you're making something intricate you should have enough knowhow to catch mistakes but even before AI companies have been releasing bug-filled unoptimized slop and having security breaches so not much will change.

AI art is the thing people should rightfully reject for being slop

Code is a lot closer to math and algebra, and while you have to have some amount of understanding to prevent spaghetti some of the code is really just already solved and having AI help you with the busywork is good. Decomps happen to be 95% busywork and having an AI interpret the boring parts isn't so bad if the end result is properly filtered and bugfixed in the end.

Here's the thing: I don't care. Recomps are what are allowing the best version of Deadly Premonition, the original 360 version, to live beyond its limited release compared with the half a dozen godawful ports that have done nothing but tarnish the game's image as something that was broken all along (it wasn't, it's just received utterly dogshit re-releases from the get go) we've gotten since. Recomps are what are letting me play Case Zero and Case West for Dead Rising 2 on PC because they're a prologue/epilogue that only ever released on XBLA fifteen years ago. These are great things for vidya 'preservation', even if it's just virtually. Are they probably made via slop AI spaghetti code? Sure. Is it better than the alternative, which is nothing at all? You can bet your ass.

In any field where most of the work is physical and technical but still needs the usual office work. Like electrician or mechanic shop. Let AI handle the invoices, parts, returns, payroll, taxes, customer history, insurance, etc. Most trades guys dont have energy for all that tedious office work and have no choice but to outsource it to people and pay them salaries. The AI recomp of Deadly Premonition is infinitely better than the human ports it received, even with mods. The native PC version is a crash fest that was never fixed to this day.
If you go as far as defending that piece of shit over the vibe coded recomp, nobody will listen to you in the more reasonable cases where you do actually have a point. You come off as a flat earther if you even deny the clear cut cases.

On the one hand I feel bad for the OG decompers. They at least gate kept their dumb autistic hobby because it was brutally difficult and challenging. However, it's objectively good that we have coding agents that can do what they're doing without some poor fucking retard having to waste their life to do it.
The DISGUSTING thing to me is that the entire point of AI dominance was that you were supposed to remove your ego from the equation. And instead we've seen AI users fall into the same hole as the people that they've replaced. Hopefully they'll learn in time, namaste.

A lot of the 360 recomps use emulator to run the GPU and recompile the CPU so that the actual bottlenecks in emulation can be solved. It sounds gay so I never tried even one of those, but they do all tend to replace the emulator pass with native rendering a few months later, so that's when I bother trying them.

he's not exactly doing source code decompilations, one of LLMs' actual legitimate uses in the context of old video games, where the goal is a clearly defined "produce notated source code for this game that, when recompiled, matches the MD5 hash of the original rom"

This problem already exists and there are already people vibe code entire projects and don't understand what is going on in them at all.
Using AI as an assistance tool is incredibly useful, be it to look for things, pull information out of dense documentation, provide something to bounce ideas off easily, generation of simple code snippets, and a million other things.
But it doesn't solve the problem of software development.

I think the big issue that is cropped up now is the conflation between the "engineering" and the programming, a lot of people have conflated programming the with the actual act of the large scale design of what you are making, very little actual design goes into small programs as mistakes and missteps you need to fix are not really an issue and you can trivially hold the whole thing in your head to have a cohesive vision.
But when you are working on something larger this is very different and you need to consciously make design decisions that impact the entire project and are days-weeks of work to change later down the line (if not more in some cases), and AI can't really do this (at this point) and its where it really breaks down.
AI is pretty good at programming trivial small sections, and if that is all you are doing then yeah, its solves that problem, but it doesn't solve the large design issues you still need to make and work with when actually making something that isn't a trivial half an hr program.

I do not disagree that the ports are dogshit, but you need to format your argument in such a way, that you're not contradicting the closing statement, with the very basis of your argument. You're making an appeal to the merits of video game preservation, while at the same time, dismissing something that doesn't adhere to your standards, and vaunting AI recomps as the superior option. But then, you admit that AI isn't perfect, and you've run into an issue
>You're critical of one thing, because of the faults
>You're claiming one thing is better, because there are no alternatives
>But then you admit there are faults with your preferred system
You've put forth information, that there ARE alternatives, and they're both flawed in different ways. To an audience you're trying to convince, you stumble on your own argument in the opening post. Insults, and non sequitur comparisons to flat-earthers doesn't help, either, but that's besides the point.

you aren't doing anything an emulator doesn't already, hell if opening an emulator for the vast majority of the same options was "too much work" and you're really that intent on excusing AI being involved in the process you're sort of making the argument that you're the dumbest human being alive and entombed in an iron lung and you need all the help you can get

Most are just repacked emulators with some patches that were already available. There's absolutely nothing inherently better about recompiling an executable and dynamic recompiling like emulators do. >>
>>748642615
AI already lets people who cannot write a loop produce working scripts, websites, and glue code. That is real. Compilers, IDEs, Stack Overflow, and libraries did the same thing in earlier eras: they moved the bottleneck.

If the only differentiator was “I can emit Python,” that differentiator is collapsing. Commodity CRUD, boilerplate APIs, one-off scripts, and first drafts of UI are getting cheaper fast. People whose whole value was typing that kind of code will feel the squeeze the same way typesetters and travel agents did.
If the value was “I can turn an ambiguous human problem into a reliable system,” that work is not gone. It is more visible, because the cheap parts are being automated.

Market crash.

the mistakes part is just that AI is not making shit from the ground up, it's taking already existing code and that code is not perfect. It's fine. Even if people now can code, the overwhelming majority of them don't know what coding can do. If you ask a regular non-tech person what programmers do, their answer will most likely be websites, because that's about what non-tech people see. You can't code something you've never heard of or can't realistically imagine, even if you have access to the technical ability. Most people don't even know what API is.

>Pro runs out of tokens very quickly. And this is an extremely simple project
I was doing actual, paid work at my job with Opus 4.6 back in March and didn't start running out of Pro tokens until they were having me full-deep-dive 20k line PRs with the thing. If you're running out "quickly" you're doing something very wrong. Either over-relying on the model to do design work, poorly structuring prompts, you've got the output on verbose, or something similar. With the $25 plan you should easily be able to get ~3 days of nonstop work per week on the project.

Check out MVG latest video. He tries some of the new recomps and there are some with graphical glitches and performance issues.

Everyone should know by know that:
>Most are done quick with AI, and with a "maintainer" who doesn't know how to code so the improvements depends on other people or well, more AI lol
>Most build an executable only for Windows and some projects are updated frequently, it's an easy vector for malware. If people thought that AUR was bad good luck keeping up with hundreds of automated or semi automated GitHub repos.

Regardless of your opinion about AI, this is more an issue of waste of fucking time. There are a lot of stuff to play without going into recomps, lots emulate very well, and if you don't care about performance mods some work perfectly with FPGA or native hardware, there's also cheap flashcarts like SummerCart 64 for $60. Or FX-PAK for $80 usd. USB soft mods for the X360, PS2, etc. Options seem limitless for retro gaming. Depends on what kind of experience do you want.

>I know you are on the same spot as the sloppers with some MINIMAL code knowledge.
I've been a reverse-engineer for ~10yrs and I have a lot of game patches under my belt
>You are not an engineer
>If AI dissapeared overnight you would be in the same room with all the jeet niggers.
My job is completely unrelated to CS, it is completely irrelevant if AI disappears overnight.

That's the thing, this is a rug pull. People won't have achievments anymore and the few people in power will remain in their spots.

Retard. Abhorrent human being. Complete SOCIOPATH

Keep in mind that an emulator is also locked to what it can do so it's safer than some random .exe some vibeshitter put on his GitHub

>the only achievements I can conceive of involve monetary value
No, man, people will be forced to realize that industrial output and income are not what defines achievement. You are the fucking retard who is so brainwashed by your corporate and political masters that you think nothing is worth doing if someone has done it before, or if it doesn't give an ROI in dollars.
AI cannot take away your gym PR. AI cannot take away the satisfaction you get from your hobbies. AI cannot take away your subjective experiences of your life.
The only thing AI takes away, achievement-wise, is your ability to inflate your ego based on computer bullshit. If you genuinely think that it's not worth hand-making something because a machine can do it, or that it's not worth doing an action because you don't get paid for it, I don't even consider you a human being.

>AI cannot take away the satisfaction you get from your hobbies. AI cannot take away your subjective experiences of your life.

It absolutetly can and it has. AI just killed reverse-engineering and many more gaming and coding sectors to come.

>A probability
A safe way of saying, "I am not confident in my statement", and it reads as such.
>Better than <things that aren't nothing>
This was never about Deadly Premonition, it was always about the way you present your argument about a subject, and to a neutral party you're trying to convince, you do not do a very good job at it. Let me reiterate: don't say it's 'better than nothing', when you're presenting something as an alternative, no matter the quality, because that's NOT nothing, that's something, and having a weak closing sentence messes with the whole post.

you can just *not* use AI

>AI cannot take away the satisfaction you get from your hobbies. AI cannot take away your subjective experiences of your life.
It absolutely can and already has for many people.
Hobbies are not practiced in isolation, especially creative ones. Humans are a highly social species, we create things primarily because we want to share them with others, not keep it to ourselves. But you can't share shit when a bunch of jeets are flooding everything with AI and completely drowning out all legitimate creations.

Those were never your hobbies, those were never your experiences.
You are a fucking golem if the existence of a machine that does a thing you find fun makes that thing less fun for you. You are a literal hylic lump of barely-animate clay if the existence of such a machine somehow dilutes your ability to enjoy your subjective experience of life. You exist purely as you are defined by your differences from others, and as such in a vacuum the truth is revealed: You are nothing.

Less human than a machine, unironically.

Sociopaths just took over the people doing it for the love of the game. They have no skills but do it for monetary compensation, this always happens, everything is about to become even sloppier.

What's the point of doing something without AI when a million jeets will drown out your creation in their AI slop? What's the point of a recomp that nobody uses or even knows about?

if every single hiking trail in the world was flooded with jeets riding quad bikes and leaving trails of fresh diarrhea behind, yes, hiking would indeed be ruined
that's what's currently happening in the open source world
